If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Yeah, I was already wondering whether I should read it. The childhood stuff made me hesitant though. Do I really have to worry or is that part rather small?

It mostly takes place when the characters are in their 30s. But the childhood parts aren't that much. They're very important to the story though.

OK, thanks. Gonna give it a try then

20th century boys is 1 of the best manga/anime has ever been made. The story is far superior compare to death notes or any famous mind-fucked story you have ever read/seen. 21st century boys is the ending of it so make sure you dont miss it.

The author is currently working on "billy bat"? which also incredible if you like 20th century boys

I was told to stay away from it. So I never watched it. Do you think it's worth my time?

Hm, it's kind've a tough call. If you're looking for something to watch and you like mecha than you'd probably enjoy it. It's fairly borderline/slightly above average all around, with I suppose the music and fight scenes shining the most. I'm optimistic for the rest of the series after episodes 8/9, but be wary there's a couple of meh episodes in the middle there, if you're going to start watching :x.

Well it's made by Bones right?

I've watched Xam'd and am currently watching Eureka (Seven), both of which are by them.

I gotta say, they did produce some good mechs so it might be good to watch. Though I have to say that Xam'd's romance ended up pissing me off and the MC from Eureka is also getting annoying.

Other than that though, now that it's Bones, I'll take a look after I finish Eureka and all the other recommendations that are popping up.

Good Bones stuff include:

RahXephon
Wolf's Rain
Scrapped Princess
Fullmetal Alchemist (well, if you like shounen-shit)
Psalms of Planets Eureka Seven
Ouran High School Host Club
Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi
Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Xam'd: Lost Memories
Jyu Oh Sei

Those are all worth watching, but Ouran, Darker Than Black and Wolf's Rain are probably my favorites.

I guess The Skull Man is decent, maybe Soul Eater and Chiko, Heiress of the Phantom Thief is too, but haven't seen them yet.

So, from reading the novels, caps-lock SHIKI, the one that died/the "male" personality, was Shiki's 'mind', while the 'female' personality Shiki that survived was the 'soul'?

So If I'm understanding it correctly, Satsuki was the one whose purpose was trivialized in Movie 6. Since I never got all the stuff about his backstory, or any deeper meaning to his involvement other, other than the Movie being a vessel for Proto-Akiha fighting.

In Movie 7, that was mainly about Shiki's desire to kill, and then Kokutou not wanting her to become a murderer. Was things like that different in the novel as well, since you said it was mostly just tying up the loose ends and stuff?

New TWOK is out. Ep 9. and Manga 123(?) Seems like it'll be Librarian madness in both for ~2 weeks.

I gotta say it bugs me a little that they're stretching the Shiori monologues that fit on 1 page in the manga into 3 full minutes of inner voice crap, but I'd be lying if I'd say I didn't expect it. I've been watching anime for faaaar too long to really be surprised by it. I'd be a fool if I'd expect anything else really... I know all too well how they fill up episodes and set up arcs >_<.

Well, let's go next season!!! with Kusonoki and Haqua \o/

Urgh..I was thinking along the lines of "If I hear *Rakuen* one more time.." throughout the 2nd half of Wolf's Rain. It's not the word itself but how (often) and when Kiba mutters it, like if you ask any difficult question to a crazy religious fundamentalist and they just shout "God" or "Bible" back at ya..Shudders.

Yeah, haha. In general, the dialogue development was pretty bad in the series, especially among the wolves. All they did was talk about reaching rakuen or occasionally about leaving someone behind or not. Still, the atmosphere was good which made me forgive any minor irritations.

I loved Wolf's Rain even if the dialogue wasn't fantastic the plot was pretty awesome, and I loved the ending

Yosuga was laughable this week. Deus ex machina much? At least they're finally getting into the arc for which I picked up this show.

There won't be any Shiori in the manga while the anime's going on because the author's taking a three week hiatus. D:

How else are they supposed to do the monologues? Besides, it fits her character, and her VA is doing an awesome job. If they do it properly, this will be my favorite arc this season.

Well, let's go next season!!! with Kusonoki Jun and Haqua \o/
<_<
It's really disheartening that it's going to take them approximately three more seasons to get through all the girls (Sumire and Yui~). And then the stuff that after that will probably take another season to do. But there's no rushing these things I guess.

I may have to check this out next season after all. I'm not about to pass up seeing a guy stab an eldritch abominations in the hand with a fork.

You're right about 6 and 7.

Hmm, I guess they didn't really explain this in the movie A lot of this is speculation because it's not 100% clear (thus the power of the epilogue, because you thought you had it figured out), but...

+ Show Spoiler +
Ryougi is actually one of four bloodlines along with Fujou (Kirie, Kohaku, Hisui), Asagami (Fujino), and Nanaya (aka. Tohno Shiki) that have some weird stuff going on. Now, what's explicitly stated is that somehow, via magic, the Ryougi lineage creates a soul-less body. The idea being that every person/soul can only master one thing over their lifetime due to a lack of focus and time. Thus, once they get the soul-less body, they hope for the materialization of multiple souls inside the body, because this is an unnatural process. As a result, they hope for Shiki/SHIKI occuring - it's also implied that this happens once every few generations.

What are Shiki and SHIKI? At first you think they're two minds, but then you realize that's not really the case. Coupled with the Rougi lineage you come to realize that they're two souls. This is why in ch/mov 6 Satsuki is able "recreate" SHIKI by reconnecting his memories into Shiki's, essentially "restoring" them on a "mind" level (because now she has his memories, his thoughts, etc.) but also, as I mentioned, exacerbating the sense of loss and perturbation because he's not actually there anymore, he's dead. Not to mention it can't be a pleasant feeling getting memories "of yourself" that weren't actually made by "yourself" and yet are being assimilated "as yourself." If I remember correctly the intent of Souren in doing this was to "break" her will, because he wanted her body, which he had (correctly) deduced was key to reaching the acasic record. What he didn't know, or rather...

The bombshell comes in the epilogue. She calls herself シキ (shiki), different from 式 (what you know as Shiki) and 識 (SHIKI).

"Hey, Kokutou, where do you think personalities reside?"
"... I don't know. But personalities are based on knowledge, so I guess it'd be in the head."

And then you get this epic speech:

The soul lives in the brain. If you only need the brain to keep people alive, then you don't need a body. As long as electricity is powering the brain, it's all that's needed to keep watching dreams -- yes, there was a magician that said that to Shiki once. The same answer as yours. That "personalities" are in the head.
But, that's wrong.
For example, Kokutou. You the person, you the personality, you the soul, are a combination of your history, your knowledge, and your empty body. The brain only creates knowledge, so with only a brain, you wouldn't actually result in a personality of a human.
... See, you can certainly extend your life with just your brain, but we recognize what we are only when we get a body. Because of a body, after you grow up together, you end up with the personality you have now. Some people love their bodies and might grow extroverted because of it, and some might hate their bodies and grow introverted because of it. Personalities CAN grow with just a body, but a personality grown purely out of knowledge would never gain self-esteem, and so it'd result in something wildly different from a person. And then you're left wondering if that's actually a personality, or just a simple calculator.
If you were to end up just being a brain, you'd have to create a whole new personality for "yourself as just a brain." You'd have to throw away the macro ego of a body, and root yourself in the smaller ego of knowledge.
It's not "there's knowledge and a body."
Knowledge is born after the body.
But a body that's created on the basis of knowledge, that wouldn't have knowledge. Because meat is just there. But meat also has a personality. Because it grew along with knowledge, and I'm the one that gave birth to knowledge.

She then calls herself "hardware without electricity" and refers to Shiki/SHIKI as software.

Adding to the Nasuverse complexity is that (and this was kind of hinted at in movie 4) Shiki, during her coma, was "swimming around" in the acasic record. Coupled with shiki's confident genie-like "Is there anything you want? Because I can make anything happen!" implies that she's got some sort of direct connection to the acasic record. However this connection isn't specified - an implication from 6 about Satsuki's lost memory and how the record stores all memories might imply that all physical bodies are tied to the acasic record, as that's where they come from. Or something. I don't think I want to give myself a headache pondering that
