This might be just from my experience but the whole thing seems pretty unrealistic. When i was in band, we had so many people we had to split up into 2 different concert bands (and a freshman band) and all the bands always got top honors in all the competitions. Of course there were some slackers, but for the most part everybody worked hard, especially in practices (even the slackers worked in practices). What it came down to though, was outside of school work. The slackers didn't do that, and the rest of us did. Another problem is with the conductor. Again this is from my experience, but there were 4 conductors at my school, and all 4 of them worked really hard, and pushed everybody really hard to do the same. And there wasn't any "you guys decide what you want" or "come get me when you can play together". The conductors first job is to pull all the sections together. That's what they're even there for...to make sure that all the different sections are coming together to play as one. Also, if anybody was not really trying, they'd get kicked out of the band. I've seen it where somebody was screwing around during practice and they just kicked them out right there. Isn't your school band an actually funded department? I'm pretty sure this thing in ufo is basically the equivalent of a club. They won't have enough resources to get all those nor does this school actually have any reputation for a band to begin with so it's not like the most studious of music students would actually go there or that it would receive major funding even IF it was an actual department. According to the wiki for the novel, the school used to be known for it's band, but then started to suck after awhile. Then this new/current teacher comes and supposedly changes that. Although the school does have a large inventory of instruments, which implies at one point the school band was good and well funded. + Show Spoiler +"The Kitauji high school concert band club had at one time participated in national tournaments and was a champion school, but after the club's adviser changed, they have not been able to even participate in the qualifying tournament. However, thanks to the newly appointed adviser's strict instruction, the students are steadily improving and build up their strength. As they fight over who plays solos, some students give priority to studying and quit club activities. Finally, the long wished-for day of the contest arrives."
As for the realism on the teacher's part, I think it's fine. His style of teaching (at least for the club) is self initiative. If the students want to be National level, they have to have the discipline and devote time to practice to be good. This isn't a mandatory class, and I don't think the teacher is a dedicated music teacher or anything. He probably teaches other subjects, but has the music background to be their advisor/conductor. It's different from your experience (and mine) in high school because to be part of these bands in high school, you also had to be taking the required music courses, and it was the teacher's jobs to be teaching music. They didn't teach other subjects.
Note: I was the lazy one in my band and got carried to Nationals and all the other music festivals etc :D + Show Spoiler +Not like playing 3rd clarinet required much skill tbh

1) If I tell you my mom died, you'd (hopefully) feel sad for me and have compassion. Because it's really easy to get in my shoes for you because you are aware of how awful that situation would be. 2) If I tell you my favorite anime char died it might not feel that sad to you but if you get the idea that it means A LOT to me you will still understand it at least and feel sad. 3) If I tell some random person on the street who never watched anime who doesn't even know what that is my fav anime char died he'll understand it even less and will understand the least about why I'm sad out of those 3 scenarios (until he sees me crying or something a bit more subtle than that)
If it really means that much to her (and it obviously does), the impact would have been a crapton better with a slightly more fullish picture for us instead of putting this first without knowing anything about her or anything about why she cares so much about it. This way we'll most likely go back to ep3 at some point and be like "aaaw, so that's why she was breaking down that time" but it's not as impactful as the punch in the belly you get from being too stupid to realize it earlier and only seeing it once it actually happens. Instead we're being told "you can feel sad now" I think finally understood what you're getting at here. it's more about the order of things and less about it actually happening. You wanted the back story of why she's so upset/why nationals means so much to her first and then showing how she's frustrated and upset. At least i think that's what you mean. She's given hints at why she's so upset and why nationals mean so much to her. She takes trumpet lessons outside of school, probably since a young age. To have to spend all that time devoted to something, it'd be frustrating to not be able to make nationals because rest of the students are lazy/suck.

Time for my weekly dose of cuteness.

I highly recommend this anime from 2009 called Kuuchuu Buranko or Welcome to Irabu's Office. It's not licensed anywhere, and doesn't seem to be very well-known, but its animation style is really cool and the stories are all pretty interesting.

It's moderately known as Trapeze.

LOL i was 3rd clarinet i mimed a lot playing in orchestra is exhilirating but my clarinet sucked and i cudnt get it to work properly
|
to be perfectly honest, for the most part i was the lazy one in band too. lol But that's more because i was in percussion, and like our practice times were always 90% conductor working with the other sections and 10% full ensemble. which lead to us sitting around doing nothing for most of the time. Band was when i usually got all my homework done.
And our percussion section was pretty damn good, i mean, they almost never had to work with us because we almost always just had the shit down perfect already.
In marching band was a bit different since percussion kind of leads the whole thing, and we worked at least twice as much as the rest of the band

Ore monogatari is so awesome.

Edit: Wait I hadn't finished the episode yet. "A O T" maybe, then. Oregairu will have to be seriously deep to best that, or Arslan seriously epic. Hahaha.

I think Euphonium would have no content without the drama. It seems rather slow even with it. I never was in band but I remember high school and college group projects were sometimes a nightmare. Having to work with people who don't give a damn can be frustrating.

Ore Monogatari is one of the happy shoujo . I think Oregairu or Arslan has to be the AOTS.

I can just watch Euphonium for Kumiko honestly

I like Ore Monogatari quite a bit, no beating around the bush like other anime (looking at you Nisekoi) and I hope it keeps up the good work

Do not see the virtues of Ore Monogatari that you guys seem to see. Are you jaded by relationship drama and "will they?" type shows that much? I mean yea its nice that they get together early but the characters themselves are just so bleh. Its an alright show but it doesn't even sniff the top 5 shows running this season.

what are the top 5 shows in your opinion
i'd prob go
Oregairu Arslan Senki Sidonia no Kishi ore monogatari
and then the rest is just what panders to me like mikagura, grisaia, dxd, euphonium, and souma which i think is more niche.

In no particular order
UBW Nisekoi Knights of Sidonia DxD Grisaia
Ore Monogatari is probably in the 8-9 range for me.
|
Danmachi is my favorite ^w^
Didn't watch earlier seasons of fate/oregairu/knights of sidonia/grisaia/ghost in the shell yet and am planning to binge watch nisekoi. Mikagura probably my 2nd favorite. Souma probably in 3rd and Yamada-kun, Plastic memories and Owari no Seraph all around #4/5/6.
I feel bad about not even putting the new Haruhi anime in top 5, but really Nagato can't carry it. I don't find ore monogatari interesting or care about the characters but I like how it feels like it's actually progressing. Denpa Kyoushi and Kekkai Sensen are decent but a bit over the top. Triage X and DxD are umm... interesting and Punchline is just stupid. I read the manga for Arslan and it wasn't very interesting to me.

Uhh.
Gintama, UBW, Daiya, Arslan Senki, and my anime just because I'm biased (otherwise Nisekoi or oregairu, dunno).

Actually haruhi comes out a little bit at ep2 but at ep3 she OWNS the show really really hard. It's actually pretty funny that nagato is the lead female but haruhi still the best girl .

Oregairu Arslan Senki Nagato Yuki (in all honesty if the haruhi here wasn't like the haruhi from the main series it would have dropped it asap) Plastic Memories(well it has been fine so far)
ok i only have 4 .. the rest are so~so and i'm watching them

Hmm top 5... in no particular order.
Euphonium - so much high school band nostalgia, asuka best girl, ufo, tubacabura lol, good drama with a pinch of slice of life. Shokugeki no Souma - next level food porn, erina <3 Oregairu - already miss their slice of lifeness, needs more happy yaharo! yui <3 Arslan Senki - I want to protect Arslan's smile... Nanoha ViVid - idk, cause nanoha, that's why
Other shows I'm watching
UBW - meh already know what happens, needs to be a bit more heart wrenching. Daiya - recap hell Danmachi - brainless show, hate on boobstring, <3 meido Nagato Yuki no Shoushitsu - kind of meh, other timeline Nagaemon more superior. Nisekoi - meh, has qt chitoge at least Ore Monogatari - whelp, show's over in 3 ep. nothing else to see here folks. Good pacing :D Yamada-kun - Literally watching it for the fanservice... and boobs... and yuri kissing. Better not disappoint. Hayamin's character is hawt.
On the chopping block Plastic Memories - ep 3 was shit. (actually, will probably keep watching it to see if Ten-chan's immortality will pass this test).
