Hooh boy.

Hey, I'd rather rip on Gundam Wing more than 00. But at least in terms of piloting, the Gundam Wing guys were for the most part geniuses. Like whenever one of them got into a Leo, they still dominated. The only time they had trouble in grunt suits like that was against those retarded Virgo Mobile Dolls.
In gundam X, Garoad pretty much extorted the entire army in space to release their hostage and also shot-down a colony laser with a single suit. True, but Garrod himself was a pretty good pilot himself. Its been a while since I've seen Gundam X, but didn't Garrod dislike using the Satelite Cannon anyway? Later on he would mostly either use it as a bluff, or against un-manned things like the Colony Laser.
Kira was outnumbered 4 gundams to 1 in the beginning... he went seed mode. IMO, SEED mode isn't exactly the same thing, though. Its similar, but SEED Mode is more like bringing out the true skill of the pilot. Basically whenever Kira/Athrun/Shinn got serious, they would SEED mode.
I mean have you seen the original Gundam? Amuro was worse than pretty much all of them.
The one thing I do miss from the original was the team aspect. It was obvious that Amuro was the main character but they did a great job fleshing out the team where they weren't just simple backdrop. Like they were involved and semi-independent. Yeah, but Amuro's plothax was all skill based. The RX-78-2 wasn't THAT great. The main thing about that Gundam was that it had Beam Weapons, which gave it tons more firepower than Zakus.
In terms of plothaxed Mobile Suits though, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Turn A Gundam. Mustache Gundam is far and away the most powerful Gundam ever in a Gundam series. The suit was so powerful, that Loran never even was able to bring out nearly its full potential during the series (fortunately for mankind, he would have caused civilization to end again if he did).

I'm getting bored and more and more disappointed in recent series. I started watching anime only a few years ago, so don't know much about anything that came out before 2007ish - only the particularly standout ones that everyone knows about.
Any outstanding recommendations from before 2006ish would be greatly appreciated. (: Slam Dunk : shonen manga/anime, funny as hell, kinda gets serious and repetitive near the end School Rumble : shonen manga/anime, as funny as Slam Dunk, but the ending sux and the anime skipped alot of the main story so you need to read the manga if you want to know the full story. Full Metal Panic : seinen manga/anime/light novel, its half-funny, half-romance. Suggest you watch the anime seeing as the manga and light novel versions are no where to be found. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When the cicadas cry) : shonen/seinen manga/anime/visual novel/novel/light novel, horror, mystery, psychological thriller. It can be really confusing and hard to understand, so i suggest you read/watch/play Umineko no Naku Koro ni (When the seagulls cry) if you haven't. Not sure if this counts as a standout but just in case: School Days : seinen manga/anime/visual novel, Harem, drama. I got nothing to say, just watch it. I've seen all of those except Slam Dunk. I'll check it out.

Any outstanding recommendations from before 2006ish would be greatly appreciated. (: I haven't watched that much pre - 2006ish stuff, but this is the stuff that I remember as really worth watching - Haibane Renmei Cowboy Bebop Serial Experiments Lain Escaflowne Gunslinger Girl Elfen Lied Welcome to the NHK Saikano Kino's Journey Mushishi GiTS Satoshi Kon stuff Hayao Miyazaki stuff A lot of this is really well known though, so you might have seen most of this. Edit: I like how I've seen about half of the pre - 2006 stuff people posted and deliberately left it off my list :p Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain I haven't yet seen. Everything else I have except for Satoshi Kon's stuff. What are some examples of his work? (even though I'll be googleing him immediately after posting this...)

HOLY SHIT PH HOW HAVE YOU NOT SEEN SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN OR HAIBANE RENMEI Yeah, caps I know. But they're two of my favorite anime ever, and absolute must-watch shows.
Start with Haibane Renmei, then watch Lain if you like that.
Satoshi Kon directed Paprika, Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

...The most recent episode of MM! had Noa riding her own Scopedog (from Votoms). Or close enough, anyway.

Yeah and we decided to call it off because we were doing so much speculating about War 3 and the Uzu.

As for Satoshi Kon, I've actually heard of every one of those. I'll definitely look for all of them.

Can anyone recommend some good progressive anime? I was watching Angels Egg (which I felt was great) and thought how sweet it would be to watch a good, longer series in the same vein.

I'm gonna be watching Shakugan no Shana....Sort of came across it yesterday again watching a stream.
I got the impression that it's worth giving it shot. Does anyone have any quick reviews on it?
|
Nihonreview and Star Crossed Anime Blog both rate SnS as mediocre, reviews at myanimelist are more forgiving towards the show.

I got the impression that it's worth giving it shot. Does anyone have any quick reviews on it? Shakugan no Shana is well known for being the first Rie Kugimiya Tsundere show. I actually enjoyed the plot for the most part(unlike people who just watch it for the queen of tsundere), but second season is badddddddd.
|
The Shana animes might well exist so you go wtf when you randomly see illustrations from the latest light novels.

The show is ok, but only really worth watching if you really really like tsunderes. Otherwise there are lots of other better shows out there.
Edit - Yeah, S sucked pretty hard.

So is everyone from Garstark an asshole or something? It's certainly starting to look that way...

I got the impression that it's worth giving it shot. Does anyone have any quick reviews on it? Season one has a decent story. It's nothing terribly special, though I did find it interesting how horribly screwed up their world is. The romance is nothing to write home about. Typical tsundere love interest + irrelevant rival + "what is this painful feeling in my chest?" etc.
Season two is insanely boring when they're just in school doing stuff. Unfortunately, this is pretty much the entire first half the season. It was bad enough that I skipped all those episodes. The second half, where they're actually fighting and doing stuff, is much, much better.
Shana S, the OVA series, is fucking horrible.
Season three is not out yet, but it should be decent to good just because of the plot twist. Heck, this is pretty much the only reason why I sat through season two.
|
I agree with Spazer here, I spoiled myself what the plot twist was and now I can't wait to see that. Season 1 was decent, most of season 2 was horrible, and I expect season 3 to be good.
|
Awesome! I'm watching it, and I like it, so all is good.
I feel like spoiling myself too....>.>
|
I agree with Spazer about Shana on all accounts.
|
The last OVA of Shakugan no Shana was great! I didnt expect it since previous ones were bad. Also the best thing about Shakugan is its music and the way they implement it. Voice actors too...
|
Wait....so which spoilers are we talking about for Shakugan no Shana? :D
