Well, she is kinda useless so far as the captain.Seems like most of her command decisions are made like this:
Kilinin/the other guy: "We need to go here to save these people."
Tessa: "How long will it take?"
Kilinin: "Some amount of time."
Tessa: "Okay let's go."
Kilinin is probably just thinking "why aren't I the captain? We could have left 5 minutes ago."
I don't know it's just kinda strange that she is super smart, but doesn't seem to be that effective of a captain. Maybe I'm wrong though I dunno.

I don't even know what your example was supposed to show. Granted, it isn't like Tessa really needed to do anything S1 except confirm minor details before giving approval.

Suffice it to say there's good reasons why she's captain. She may not be the most authoritative of COs, but she does still have the crew's respect.
Also Kalinin is pretty boss, but Mardukas is #1.

Isn't that generally how military chain of command works? Checks and balances and confirmation of orders, etc.
