If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.ggFor currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net |
I would highly suggest checking out Satoshi Kon's works. All of his movies and of course Paranoia Agent. You have likely seen Paranoia Agent, though. You are looking for something that's rather rare, and what Zergneedsfood mentioned was pretty much all of the similar ones.
Cat Soup is an amazing 30 minute mini-movie. That might be just what you're looking for. It's 10/10. For a more casual anime, you could try Kino's Journey. Episodic series, but doesn't tie together as much like Tatami does. Definitely top-tier though.
Lastly, you could try Boogiepop Phantom or Texhnolyze. I never saw Boogiepop since the director is mehhh, but it is supposed to be similar to Lain. Texh has obvious similarities with Lain. Oh, and maybe Xam'd would be okay, but is isn't really that abstract. Ghost Hound might also have what you are interested in. I dunno.
Oh, if you're into a more sci-fi kind of anime, I'd also recommend Pale Cocoon. It is only 25 minutes long, but so good!

i don't actuall remember why i didn't like texhnolyze so i will rewatch

I know what you kind of mean. The first 8 episodes of Texhnolyze are basically nothing happening for the most part. I think one episode has a woman crossing her legs for like ten minutes. I felt something similar with Lain but for Texhnolyze the first few episodes really can be a turn off (and I liked Texhnolyze volumes more than I did Lain). But those are kind of important though and the series just gets better and better after that.
|
Yes, watch Texhnolyze, first 8 episodes are great, in my opinion. After that it picks up the pace, but doesn't necessarily get better (it can't get better stays as just awesome). Also, I like slow stuff so... keep watching even if the first 8 are slow cause later it's just as good but quicker pace.
Edit: Think I'll try watching Haibane Renmei, looks like it could be pretty good.
|
Haibane Renmei and the book it was inspired by are both fucking awesome.
|
Haibane Renmei is my top 5 fav. Even though I couldn't rate it 10 it just resonate better.
But it's not really similar to Lain.

Anyone reading http://myanimelist.net/manga/35573/orange. I read the synopsis looks really interesting. Kinda matches the whole "romance time travel" sort of thing I was looking for, kinda but not really.
I just want some opinions before I start on it.

It really wouldnt be, atleast not for what hes looking.

+ Show Spoiler [Yahari 5] +Wow the second half of the episode got really deep for this kind of show. Hope it keeps going this way, really unexpected and there are inklings of a greater plot going on.
And lol @ Valvrave 4, I swear it keeps getting dumber and dumber..
|
It is actually pretty much standard fare for that genre though, not sure what you were expecting.

It's been relatively "deep" from episode one. I think it's an excellent show, and it's also one that I can easily relate to.

He might like it if he liked Kaiba or Eva or something like that. Doesn't seem -that- far-fetched. Plus, it's a really good anime, and he seems to have interest in really good animes!
And I'm so relieved to have not put any time into watching Valvrave!

Valvrave is exactly what I've been waiting for. God I love trainwrecks like this.
New Kurosawa sounds great. Now if only Madhouse would announce Akagi season 2 or a movie. Surely Washizu is finished in the manga by now. Or a Ten adaptation. Or anything, give me more FKMT goodness.

What I like is that they're all becoming more pathetic by the minute, even though they're still apparently powerful :D + Show Spoiler +"Pathetic" in a cute way. Like Maou only caring about being the employee of the month and such. Or the B-movie exchange between Maou and Ashiya. I can't help but smile everytime.
Or a Ten adaptation. Or anything, give me more FKMT goodness. What I would do for a Ten adaptation...
