If you wanted to, its also acceptable to watch 'Overture to a New War' in place of episodes 1 and 2 of the main OVA. Overture is a movie version of the events of the first two episodes, and basically adds much more content to those events, and is very good. Its up to you, though.

Overture to a new war is certainly worth watching, I recommend it.
Oh yeah, avoid LoGH: Golden Wings like the plague. Even if you are curious about how bad it can actually be, don't. It is horrible, and a shit-stain upon an otherwise excellent franchise.
