On one hand I like it and on the other hand it's "wtf, she looks completely differently."

Major looks way too angry and way too tomboyish. Not saying that the major fanservicey style was necessary, but the new one looks like someone read "strong female lead" and couldn't fathom anything other than a butch bitch.

Dont like it, and it has nothing to do with completely different. The chara design oozes naive tryhard rookie to me and we all know thats the last thing the major is unless its by design and relates to the setting and plot.

I'm not sure where it oozes naive tryhard rookie, could you explain that?
Also, I think it was hinted somewhere that it was a prequel. Or maybe I just looked at the word "Arise" and the first thought was prequel/flashback stuff.

Actually I agree, she looks like one of those stereotypical super uptight by-the-book rookie sidekicks
From the backstory I remember (been a while), she never had one of those phases.

FMA Brotherhood. One Piece.
Those are pretty much the top anime you can ask for.
You can try out Gintama. It's pretty hilarious and good.
If you like those scientific stuff, you can try Steins;Gate. The pace of the story is pretty slow though but it get better later on.
Also,Kokoro Connect is also pretty good. And you can try out Tonari no Kaibutsu.
You can try those out if you are into romantic-comedy.
Though these days it's really hard to find really good anime.

Not sure how much they explored it after SAC (I'm working through 2nd GIG), but the movies and SAC really didn't say all that much about her past other than vague inferences here and there.
Still, someone explain how she gives off that vibe, because it just looks like people are reading too much into her appearance.
+ Show Spoiler [Innocence] +She was a freaking doll in this movie, and she was still badass. I don't think people should put an emphasis on her appearance when half the time, the franchise was touching on the superficiality of these things. Hence the word "SHELL."

So why not try to find anime not from "these days?"

Hellsing Ultimate ep. 10 + Show Spoiler [Warning: Profanity] +Words can only say so much, but here's my basic reaction:
HOLY FUCKING SHIT
THIS HAS LITERALLY TRANSCENDED AWESOMENESS AND GONE ON INTO TO SOME NEW, UNCHARTED WORLD
WHAT THE FUCK, I DID NOT THINK SOMETHING COULD ACTUALLY BE THIS FUCKING AMAZING
HOLY FUCK THAT WAS JUST... FUCK HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AMAZING
I could not have asked for a better final episode; they really didn't leave anything out, it's complete now.
I feel like I need to take a long break from the outside world to digest this now... Wow

One of the major appeals to Major Kusanagi's character was her personality. I'd say the best way to describe her is a "brutal professional". Her approach to almost every scenario was walk in, get the job done, then hand in the report. Very rarely do you ever see any sort of extreme expression - and whenever you did, the end result would be equally extreme.
One image isn't much to talk about, but there is a ton of significance in her first appearance being a frowny-angry face. I don't see what this "naive rookie" talk is about, but any depiction of her character being overly emotional just doesn't...well, warrant the nickname "Major".

I think the issue is she looks super serious, and she is not very serious at all, especially if you go by the original source + Show Spoiler +.
And I have no issue with anime "these days". There are a TON of great stuff. The problem is that we get 20-30 series per season instead of 6-8, and everything kind of blend together and look generic just because how many there are.

The problem is she is not a brutal professional at all, she is more of a rogue than anything else (and sure as hell don't hand in a lot of reports).

Not sure how you can be a rogue when you're the head of a major government taskforce.

They made a whole movie about looking for her after she disappeared for basically no good reason...

Think Re-l, it might just me be and may not be like that but that just doesnt feel very "major" to me unless theres some backstory to it. Its just an irksome image, not a bid deal.

She was pretty pissed off in the first scene of Stand Alone Complex iirc. o_O
Does she really look that serious and angry? I just don't see it, lol

Maybe it's because the two share similar colored eyebrows. Haha. xD

I honestly prefer that look over the TV anime's super skimpy version of her.

I was going to say Commander, but couldn't remember her official rank within the organization.

Amnesia good so far with ep 2~ interesting. Not sure how long they can keep this momentum up though, so it's the mid/latter stages of the story that's gonna be the decider...
