Given the author's style and the previous series I honestly don't think it'll be that depressing. The most depressing event will probably be a certain backstab, but I don't think that even led to anything significant happening.
From what I skimmed it is like Geass without maphacks and with a suicidal MC and annoying main girl, so pretty standard far as LNs go. Honestly if you want to work through something go through MaoYuu, since somehow all 5 vols of the books randomly got scanned.
