+ Show Spoiler + I see so many posts about GC before I watch it, much more than usual, so I expected a godly episode. It was a good ep overall, but was disappointed. Damn all of you talking about a show I'm watching, tricking me! I for one am really glad the the stupid highschool setting as we know it is pretty much entirely destroyed. Their entire school is quarantined off, and they saw Shu and Ayase fighitng off a mech. Thank God the worst part of the show has no chance of coming back, till maybe the epilogue. Was nice to see Ayase's Void giving her legs. Although personally, its kinda sad since that probably means no more piloting out of her. This episode did a good job setting up the 2nd half of the show. Now time to see Shu really step into Gai's shoes, probably as a leader of a resistance against his dad (at least I think thats his dad).

![]() "Hana no" means more to me in the context of this anime than "So the flower..." does. Why are you even translating it? And they (crunchysubs and commie) do this with a lot of things they shouldn't be doing this for. Compare to Saitei: ![]() Perfect. Changing color to help illustrate the difference between the two "Mo" cards... plus they do a lot of stuff to help the viewer understand what is going on instead of only translating. Hell, check this out: ![]() That is sick as fuck and I appreciate it so much I'm donating some money to saitei.

I'm probably the biggest Inori fan there is, but even so, it was a little sad to see Shu x Inori rubbed all over our faces. Especially since + Show Spoiler + This episode actually opened up the potential for Ayase x Shin. I also feel bad for Hare. Her void pretty much shows that she is the nicest girl ever, but she has no chance of ever winning over Shin. Also, Is anyone super psyched to see what Tsugumi's void is? She's like the only member of the Undertakers whose void hasn't yet been withdrawn. Ayase's void is nice though. I can't say I was surprised that her heart's desire was to run like the wind.

This harks back to ye olde translating discussions but Crunchyroll in general does not serve weeaboos when it comes to their translation and this is a stance they should make as a company going commercial and going for broad appeal. This is also a stance that, for instance, TV shows make with their subtitles. Here in The Netherlands, they don't try to explain an English pun in a comedy show, they use a Dutch equivalent. You'll hear a complaint or two about it but the joke will lose its impact when you try to explain it. If you know English, you'll get it. On the opposite side you have the translations that serve to understand what's going on behind the show, the subtleties, the "TL Note: cute means kawaii." Of course, the boundaries of the cultural context is nearly limitless, to a point where a TL note might not suffice. In general, they are distracting. I know some groups experimented with pasting extended notes at the end of a show. It's also what's generally being done in manga where there's room for it. I know that as a full-time weeaboo I prefer the latter, but I have no particular qualms with the former. Say I had a friend who I'd recommend Chihayafuru to, I'd give him the former.

I raised question about Tsugumi's Void as well. But so far Tsugumi has been an incredibly bland character (we know nothing about her except her affinity to cat-ear). It will take some development in order to see her Void, since the Void is the materialization of her personality and will. It's interesting that AyasexShu was raised here. I think this is just a ploy from the writers to boost viewership. It has already been very clear that Shu likes Inori and Inori likes Shu. The only issue between them, the way I see it, is the potential + Show Spoiler + incest

But that's like saying Sakura and Shaoran in CCS is incest. Then again, + Show Spoiler + Mana started it; what she did was even worse ![]() BTW, I think we should discuss the following about characters: + Show Spoiler + 1. Out of all the characters that appeared so far, only Tsugumi's Void has not been shown. I wonder what kind of development it would take to take out her Void; 2. Who has the highest chance of dying right now? I have a strong feeling that Hare will die eventually in the series; there is also a high chance that Shouta will (cheap emotional bomb). Heck, I think except Ayase, Tsugumi and class rep, everyone else in the school has potential death flags. Furthermore, given Inori's nature, I have a feeling that she might not survive until the end of series. My vote on who going to die is.... + Show Spoiler + Ayase sadly enough. She also a combat type so it would make sense for her to die in battle. She is an awesome character but she been having a slight rivalary with that psychotic blonde kid because she kinda stole his mecha. I think he will fight her and she will do something brave and protect Shu once he become the leader of funeral parlor but realizing her failure to save Gai she will have more determination this time not to lose Shu as well and as a result die protecting Shu. This will piss off Shu and Shu will end his life. I think the death of a signifigant character wont happen till late late in the series. I am expecting something big like the ending of R2 where everything jut blow up and shit and went to war, minus the plot holes and the insanity of how R2 ended. It will just probably be something of that caliber imo. In the end, someone will die and if I had a second vote, it would be Hare. She is just too nice....nice character like her are just meant to die and piss everyone off. No one would prefer to know the meaning behind a one-syllable thing whose name is only that because of the sound it makes. There is absolutely no meaning behind "chihaya" in this context other than the fact that when the reader makes those sounds, you go for that card. I wouldn't even consider that to be Japanese. It is a language created by and used for karuta, whose English equivalent would be the same thing it is in karutalangauge, because that makes fucking sense. I don't understand how even the most nonweeb of anime viewers would prefer crunchy or commie over saitei. There is a reason translators don't literally translate every line. You lose some of the cultural meaning doing that. It is the same thing here.

At that I don't even see the point of bothering to wait for something like Saitei's unless some aspect of their translation draws you. All the cultural meaning behind karuta lies in the phrases used, there is no meaning whatsoever in the 'sport' itself. So yeah if you like that aspect of Japanese literature, all the power to you. I'd recommend you go buy a book and read those instead of bothering with watching an anime about karuta.
