If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

while I dont like the idea of a professional critic in general, I would however give a critic enough credit to be able to base his ratings on things that are not connected to things like "do I like this genre or not" or "if everyone likes it it has to be good" thus elimenating the chance of people stumbling across Cardcaptor Sakura and making them think every anime has to be like that.

Obviously Japanese anime has a smaller list to choose from.

But not if you were talking to people who actually knew TV or film, and weren't just casual viewers. I mean sure, my parents would probably say that NCIS is the greatest show ever, but you also wouldn't see them posting in a thread about TV shows ...

Yeah, but you're basically relying on "professional" critics of anime who watch it intellectually to try to rationalize what is or is not the best of animes.

At that point it's just a matter of realizing that we all want to watch anime for fun and we deem animes as "best" or "worst" depending on our enjoyment, emotional reaction, etc. from said animes.

Like, I could be here saying that an anime like Clannad was great, and then someone else next to me could've seen entirely differently, depending on a character that he didn't like, or something like that.

Honestly, I kind of loathe the day where someone describes themselves as a "professional anime critic". Like you said, it's not really like books or movies where you have to take each one seriously. Taking things like, say, most Gainax shows seriously is a bad idea. But they're usually very enjoyable. Same for a lot of gag shows like Shin-chan. Not that I like Shin-chan, but some people do, and if you try to critique it alongside something like Cowboy Bebop, it's not even the same realm of imagining.

I think I might take this post back. Nothing wrong with a professional anime critic, but I fear that it's just another thing that can be badly done to make anime not as acceptable in the eyes of the public. Like, I'm afraid of the day where we have a professional anime critic review Cardcaptor Sakura or something like it and rate it highly (because apparently it's widely liked, I haven't watched it since I was a kid), and then a new person sees it, and gets turned off by calling a magical girl show good.

It's similar to gaming, and how there used to be (and still is, as it goes) a stigma about them all being violence like GTA.

I dunno, I'm not the kind of person who hides the fact that I like anime, but I don't wave my love of it around because of the stigma. I don't want it to be a "secret club" or whatever, but I also get tired of people comparing every anime to Sailor Moon and DBZ, when things like Trigun or Samurai Champloo exist in their amazingness.

And then you get really good but really weird shows like the Gainax series or Soul Eater. You can't really recommend them to someone who's not a fan, because some of the parts of them might be a turn off.

Arg. Just frustrating to me.

Except Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon are pretty iconic magical girl shows that sort of define the genre. DBZ is hugely iconic as well, especially in the West.

Well yeah, I agree, but I can't stand it when I say I'm watching anime or try to recommend someone and people are like "Oh yeah, I used to watch DBZ (or whatever) as a kid, why are you still watching kid's shows?". Yes, these people are closed minded and what not, but still. It's headache inducing.

It's like if the first movie that people think of when film is brought up was Snow White or something, or the Disney Channel was the stereotype of American TV.

When anime actually has rather deep stories and interesting characters, I hate that the stigma is that they're children's shows or something like that.

But now I'm just venting. I'll stop :\

I think the stigma isn't that their children shows but more than they're over the top....

Like if you think about mainstream anime shows that a lot of people watch (Naruto for example), those tend to just be really crazy and get really over the top (kind of like Bleach too), which just makes people think that all anime are just shounen no-brain shows.

Which is actually something I had thought for the longest time.

Guilty Crown was REALLY good this week. I am impress. Now I hear its going on a 3 week break or some shit. Is that true? If so, I'm mad. I'll probably be mad until Gundam SEED HD Remaster airs and gets subbed and then I forget all about my rage.

Better get ready to rage for a day or two. I'm really interested in how much will change in the HD remaster and will watch because of my disappointment in Gundam AGE's first 2 or so episodes. Speaking of Gundam Age... how is it now? I might give it another shot if the later parts are better/interesting.

That's what I felt too. Shu getting more manly was probably one of the things I liked the most. Him using all of his friends and using all of those voids was pretty cool too.

Age is... more or less the same. Kinda generic/average on every level. Nothing good, nothing bad. I'm thinking it will get alot more interesting come Generation 2.

If Sentenal praises anything, especially if its an anime that you enjoy yourself, you can bet your ass its gonna be good.

Gonna be saving this ep till the end of the day ^_^

Actually now its more evolved, alot of people (aside from the obvious hentai jokes) often tend to associate anime with animated japanese school girls and in general the ecchi madness that's stormed in the past few years. And to be fair just like someone said about there being alot bad VN's theres alottt of bad anime, sure alot of it isnt meant to be taken seriously but its still bad, you can find entertainment in bad shows ofcourse, I do. Still its a pretty self inflicted stigma.

I really liked the OVA. It was cute and everything. Made me feel all nice inside after I was done with it.

Taiga feeding Ryuuji is always really cute too.

That OVA was definitely very nostalgic. Reminded me exactly why I loved all the characters in it. + Show Spoiler +
Couldn't stop laughing when Ryuuji brought his water heater and then rice cooker to class. That and how everyone in the class instantly knows it was him that brought it.

Minorin was awesome with all her antics, and seeing her sleep in class again with eyes drawn over her eyes. Super cute in that waitress uniform too!

lol did you really hope for a random Airi end to occur in last episode? But this anime does make me rage for its inconsistency and poor execution. random cat drama and then some school merger issues that get mentioned, Airi gives speech, then it gets dropped lol. Actually, I was sort of wondering if Airi was going to be like "I was against the merger, but then I found true love!" I do think Miu is really cute but...gahhh Airi route was going so well.

Airi was like the focus for so long. It sucks that she did get undercut now that I think back on it.... :/ She actually was the best girl too, and her tsundere qualities weren't even that pronounced and annoying after a while.

Also, kaze. Thanks for posting. If you hadn't, I would've forgotten your KawaiiRice signature lol.

Guilty Crown was REALLY good this week. I am impress. Now I hear its going on a 3 week break or some shit. Is that true? If so, I'm mad. I'll probably be mad until Gundam SEED HD Remaster airs and gets subbed and then I forget all about my rage.

I read it was 12 EP season some where and other places 24. What is the truth. TELL ME THE TRUTH
