As I had discussed with Southlight once upon a time, the monogatari series (especially first part) drives plot with humor, particularly ones based on the otaku subculture. While we have good themes in them like the later zaregoto books, it is a style that some people just can't stomach. It was good pacing in bake, kizu had much lesser slapstick (though does not mind using fan service) and nise potentially overdo the humor+fan service parts. This changes pretty significantly in the second part of the books with Araragi being phased out of the narrator position and some books feel closer to zaregoto in terms of style. Or, in the case of Hanamonogatari, practically Nasu. Another thing is that I don't quite value zaregoto that highly. It is an entertaining series, but honestly the first 5 books were pretty bad. He dropped that pseudo mystery thing he tried to go for early on by vol 3, but it still hurt the early books a lot. It really felt like that the early vols were throwaway vols to establish some basic things about ii-chan and Hitoshiki. As diluted as the monogatari series gets, I can't make that kind of accusation about those books. So yeah... | ||

monogatari series, of course, are good, otherwise, they will not have such popularity. However, there is not much creativity or sparks of genious as in Zaregoto Series. That's why I say I'm not impressed. | ||

I'd HIGHLY recommend watching that. I just got done reading the manga (or as much as is translated rather - pure coincidence that I picked it up this week) and it was HILARIOUS. I'm definitely going to be checking out the anime, even though I almost entirely read manga. | ||
