You just had 12 episodes there, which were airred out of order, which let the audience constantly trying to piece things together, and created a more mysterious and unique feel for the anime. Most of the first season was pretty good, and the Melancholy part was 6 episodes with a direction and flow to the plot, and a decent enough conclusion. Most people hate season 2, for very good reason. However, the Movie is really good, so be sure to watch it.
I will agree that Haruhi, and the Haruhi Movie, are very overrated. But they are still good shows in their own right.

Makes up for the horror that was the endless 8! Trying to keep up with all the time travel(even though technically it only happens two times) / time stop / craziness is pretty tough...but is defiantly worth it.
I am really tempted to pickup the novels and read some of the stuff that I am missing out on from the anime/movies. Any thoughts? thanks to madoka delays looks like a friend(s) and i will be watching this i know what happens ahead in the novels, but it seems i dont particularly prize haruhi for its story It's all right. The series is more or less about Kyon's sexy voice anyway.

I think it's good, but I still don't get why it's so popular or why people love it so much. I guess from the posts I read at other places, I expected it to live up to all the hype and attention it was getting. Haruhi is quite the fun type of a person and is a natural protagonist, I guess.
I also got around to playing ef (the visual novel). I'm not very deep into it yet (roughly 2-3h), but it feels good. The animated speeches and voices are a welcome sight for me since the last VN I played (FSN) had neither. The story is believable, and honestly I'm happy there are no aliens or anything like that in it (yet). The pacing of the story is good, the music and SF are great, and the VN does have a sort of "magic" around it. I can see why people enjoy it. The series is more or less about Kyon's sexy voice. Sugita Tomokazu is all that matters.

With how much Blasterion loves yuri, I don't think he'd mind.

Haruhi season 1 is at its root a parody of anime. The show spoofs a variety of different genres (not just shows, genres), and manages to do so in a way that is both entertaining and actually makes sense. Consider how varied the episodes are. There's a sports episode, a murder mystery episode, a crazy fight scene episode, a romance episode, a space battle episode, a random fanservice episode, a concert episode, a beach episode etc. That's a ton of genres just mashed into one place. And yet the show makes all of those disparate episodes fit together, and fit together in ways that spoof convention.
Just some examples (spoilers): + Show Spoiler +There's a huge space battle scene, but it's absurd because the battle is meaningless and part of a video game. Yet the battle is still better done and more entertaining than any battle in LoGH which it is clearly parodying. The beach episode is not light hearted fun (well, sort of), but Kyon worrying about whether someone will be killed. And the fanservice is good anyway. The kiss episode is a totally absurd kiss scene, complete with one of the most ridiculous non-romantic kiss lines I've ever heard. And then the kiss is "all a dream" (well, not really but whatever). Yet it's still a great scene. Mikuru gets falls on someone and gets her boob touched. This is like the stereotypical scene where the MC falls on the girl's boob except that in Haruhi it is entirely deliberate so the computer president can be blackmailed. The first episode is a parody of Haruhi itself, with Yuki as alien, Mikuru as time traveler, Koizumi as Esper, Haruhi as director and Kyon as narrator. The theme in these examples is that Haruhi takes the conventional scene, twists it on its head, and makes it better. It's extremely clever and (imo) hilarious. Perhaps the most remarkable part of the show is that it's a parody show which stands on its own even if you don't get the jokes. Even if you miss all the references, and all the genre warping, the show is good enough to still be entertaining. How many comedies would still be worth watching even if you missed all the jokes?
The characters are also great and more detailed than they appear on the surface. They do develop over the course of the show, even Mikuru. That real story is how all the characters change over time; how Haruhi and Kyon help each other realize that life is more exiting than either of them think.
And the movie is also excellent.

That looks like garbage trying to defend an over-hyped show.

Hmn, let's see.
+ Show Spoiler +1. I don't think Haruhi is a comedy. It's genre savvy, but you're right in that it's not really funny. 2. Yuki is boring and bland, but thrives on the implication of being interesting, which makes her a fan favorite. 3. Yup, that's about it. It is a slice-of-life after all, in that it truly slices Kyon and Haruhi's life. 4. Supah Doraiba Toshi 5. Again, there's a lot of implication here and it should probably stay that way. 6. I like Endless Eight. I should rewatch it because I have a hard time articulating why I like it.

I made a chart about the first season, whee.

I think the Haruhi movie is amazingly awesome because of the creativity within the limits the production staff takes. It's not an animated novel, it truly is a movie that stands on its own feet and abuses the strength of the visual medium. More animation studios should follow that example.

Dude, the LoGH battles were soooo dull, christ.
I'm not saying Haruhi's 5 minute joke battle was better than the whole show, but I thought the overly ponderous nonsense fights in LoGH were one of the weakest parts of the show.
Edit - honestly, the LoGH fanboyism in this thread is ridiculous sometimes (yes, this is hypocritical considering I just wrote a fanboy post). LoGH battles were two shapes whacking against each other with retarded tactics and arbitrary victories. There is no reason to watch that for half an hour.
