Oh god, spice and wolf..
+ Show Spoiler +Definitely one of my favourite shows of all time. Every conversation was so deep, I expect I caught maybe 40% of it. There are so many topics that make you think and that are covered exceptionally well. Words just can't describe how I've fallen in love with this anime. I'll probably rewatch it 2 or 3 more times in the future. Anyhow, season's 2 ending is really open, and albeit happy, leaves me wishing for more! I'm sure that the VN goes further, and I've also heard speculations of a season 3. Is anything confirmed?
Also, I have to say that that was the best romance I have ever seen. Nothing was rushed, the 2 characters were flirting with each other, both so smart that they went to incredible depths of their relationship(talking about it, I mean) and slowly, though surely, they developed a strong bond for each other. Again, I cannot describe with words how well it was done. I am fucking sad that there's still no season 3, and honestly, I don't know what to do. I'm pretty sure there is not a better romance anywhere on this planet. I'd like to hear people's thoughts about the series!

This is all the more bizarre when you consider that the protagonist is supposed to be relatively veteran when it comes to these things, and yet he makes the most stupid of blunders, and the plot device goes as such: a) MC makes retarded blunder that would throw people into prison for debt b) by fortune, quick wits, and Horo's cunning, he makes it out c) moves to next town d) go back to a this is aggravating, and further is compounded by 2) Horo's cunning tends to be long-winded (never direct, always does these willy-nilly coy BS that overdramaticizes the main character's plight for 5 episodes before being "solved" in some dumb way.) This then underlines 3) Most of the anime series ends up becoming more of a series of flirtation between the two than an actual "wise old sage vs young lad." While it's not too surprising for a Japanese LN (and I say this with an obvious sarcastic, distasteful tone) it really ruins the premise of Horo the character and starts a downspiral of bad. I don't recommend it unless you fall in love with Horo. I'm a staunch believer in that being the one and only reason people actually like the anime. Edit: TL;DR For the series to be good, Horo needed to be like Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari. Instead she ended up being like some random girl from a harem anime of your choice. Good game.

I love horo, but that's not the only reason I enjoyed this anime. Explain being like some random girl from a harem anime, though. She seemed to me like the most developed romance character I've yet seen.
also, dont stomp my amazing feeling of the anime too much, but i really loved it

Watch more, I guess, Horo has no depth. The show's discussion of economics and finances is nonexistent for all practical purposes because the author just wasn't smart enough. So like Southlight said, any conflict just works out to be Lawrence fucking up somehow and Horo miracles up a way to save him. Cute for a few times, tedius in the long run. Ignoring how that sucks in itself, it also puts Horo in a very limited position far as character development goes. So really by the middle of the anime series, after the first like two vols of LN content, there just wasn't anything else to develop about Horo. It just turns into this thing of weighing homesickness and a longing for the past vs the present and romance. That's ok too, but there is no progression beyond that because the author wants to write another dozen books to milk the series with.
So we have a character with very limited room for development, what can we do with that? Good conversations, thus why Gahara-san was mentioned. Horo's lines, unfortunately, were not witty as much as they were just flirty. Dunno about you, but I can't pay attention to those two flirting for a whole series.
As for being like a random girl from a harem anime, minus being a wolf, Horo is just a tsundere. By this day and age, you'd better have some amazingly well done tsundere to stand out. Not the case here.

I just feel compelled to complain about S&W because I had such expectations for it to actually cover economics and finance, then I get another tsundere.
At least we can find the way Horo talks to be amusing, not that it distinguishes her from the archetype at all.

You are however exaggerating a little with the business. I agree that the plans didn't blow my mind, but that wasn't really the point. The main part I enjoyed was the character development (or rather relationship development) between holo and the protagonist, and the very deep conversations that were there in every episode. I won't however argue with you to try to change your opinion, just stating my tastes
Out of curiosity, do you know of an anime similar to S&W but better? You have to have something in your mind that you're comparing it to, and I'd love to watch it

Their relationship development consists of flirting every arc, where else does it go lol. Deep conversations? Nothing I can remember of like that. When Horo is filled with longing of the past and for her homeland, how do they get out of it? By flirting. When Lawrence fucked up (again) and is depressed, how do they get out of it? By flirting. The series doesn't have deep conversations, it has one or two sentimental moments before the two go back to, yes, flirting.
I am not exaggerating with the business, even some Geass like cheats would've impressed me more than what S&W managed. By the later arcs the ways they are getting out of problems are coming close to deus ex machina in how Horo miracles up solutions. Not miracles in a good way, but in a 'wtf we can do this shit?' way.

I liked Spice and Wolf.
To me, while I understand what people are saying about it, I feel like for an Anime, Spice and Wolf is super heavy with a lot of dialogue, and reminds of Katanagatari in the sense that it was just a lot of talking back and forth.
And while it was a lot, every episode just went by and I never felt like episodes just dragged about nothing the entire time.
And it's true, the reason why I liked it because I liked Horo; she's the most mysterious and intriguing person in the show and has the most potential for growing.
There are a lot of things that she experiences in S1 and S2 that develops her character. In my opinion, I don't think that Horo classifies as the typical tsundere who acts cold on the outside but is frail and weak on the inside, because I saw her more as the coy character who balances both out when she's expressing her emotions in front of Lawrence....
But meh...what do I know. I need to watch more anime....

Tsunderes aren't "cold on the outside and frail and weak on the inside". That might currently be the most typical because that personality type is rehashed in almost every anime recently, but its not what defines a tsundere. Tsunderes basically just have to alternate between "hot and cold". Where sometimes they are cold and a bitch, and other situations they are sweet and nice, normally towards whoever they like. Either personality can be their "default".
