Let's be honest Oda wasn't even genuinely pretending Kanjuro and Orochi were dead. He off-screened the Kanjuro fight and Orochi has a mythical devil fruit that gives him 8 heads. Of course he's gonna survive the most gruesome death scene in One Piece what with the emphasis on Kaido cutting his head off.

I'm fine that Kanjuro is still alive, it makes some sense that the Samurai didn't really have it in them to kill him and he was off-screened.
I'm kinda annoyed that Orochi is, he lost basically any powerbase and the dual-villain is imo one of the problems of this arc. I don't see how him being alive makes things more interesting and honestly I was happy that we're past the Samurai part. At least I thought we were.

At least one of us here was convinced Orochi was dead. Personally I thought it was obvious that Orochi was alive. It is silly that they are both alive though. Whoever have heard of a duel to the death where you don't make sure that the other guy is dead? You just stab the guy a little and then walk away hoping he doesn't get up and kill you from behind?

Orochi's case is even funnier. Surely a dead body would had been disposed of in some way. Stored in a room somewhere. or even just left lying where he died. It's populated castle full of fighters, but somehow a dead body can get up and run around without anybody noticing.

Compared to your average peasant in the One Piece world, all of the guys in that fight have really transcended your typical definition of being human. So yeah, that line was a bit jarring to me as well

I'm starting to come around to the people who don't like Wano. This raid is really dragging on, IMO because the cast of characters is too big. This really shows the intelligence of splitting the crew for Dressrosa and Whole Cake because look at just how underserved most of the crew has been in this raid. Jinbe and Sanji basically have done nothing productive on screen yet, ditto Usopp and Nami (Jinbe being the least served, he's not even run away like those 3 did!). Meanwhile, between the scabbards, Momo, Minks, Yamato, and Marco we are basically watching a story about a different crew that comprises those people + Luffy, Zoro, and Chopper. Those three being the only Straw Hats that haven't been fairly ignored so far in the raid.

The problem imo isn't just that it drags because the cast is that big, it's that it's also harder to care for that many characters. There have been a few characters with notable story like afro guy and Oden, but these are dead and the only thing I could tell you about the Scabbards is that they are dumb and loyal, because that's how much I remember about them. In a world where everyone is larger than life it feels to me like most of the Wano cast is fairly normal and that's problematic for their memorability as well as their fighting power. Like I get that Oda wanted his version of the 7 samurai, but it would have been way better if they were 4-5 better developed characters and not 9 scabbards, the Yakuza, the landlord, Momo, the animal girl, her master, the fox and probably two dozen other characters I've forgotten about.

As a result it feels at times like there is a Wano story the strawhats are way too strong for and a pirate story that's there to keep the SH's occupied so the Wano part can resolve itself. And because Orochi is the main villain of the Wano story Kaido really lacks negative impact since 99% of the atrocities were committed by Orochi, but Kaido is the guy the SHs actually need to beat because Orochi is a pushover by himself. So we get the Wano stuff that has the buildup but doesn't really matter for the resolution and the SH taking down the headliners that didn't have any buildup (outside of Queen) but do matter.

It's probably going to be a lot better when I read it as an arc from start to finish instead of one by one on a weekly basis, but it still feels like Oda wanted to stuff way too much into the story.

You know I thought the reason there were so many characters is because Oda was going to start killing them off to raise the stakes, but so far it's only been the porcupine guy that got wacked. I would have killed off at least Kiku and maybe Neko/Inu during the Kaido fight, then have Ashura die now after exploding, and have Denjiro sacrifice himself in some way to defeat Orochi while Kawa redeems himself by saving Hiyori somehow. Then you're left with the main members - Kinemon, Raizo, Kanjuro, and either the Dog or Cat, which seems like a perfect ending to me.

I think the fact that Oden wasn't alive after all and that being a huge relief would have been a very self aware writing decision to make for Oda if he didn't reveal that both Orochi AND Kanjuro were also alive in the same chapter. Honestly this whole mini-game of having to figure out if a character is dead is and has been really annoying for a while.

Oh and I'm 99% sure that Ashura Doji isn't dead.

The typical One-Piece tone (which is joyful, colorful, etc.) is a bit jarring compared to the historical-fiction gravitas of the setting and actual plot of the arc. I think we might have benefited from a more dramatic tone like the Ussop subplot during Water 7.

That all being said, there's been so many great reveals and treats. I love how Kaido been portrayed as a character and as an S class threat to the world.

Biggest criticism is having Big Mom stick around the entire arc; I would have rather had her show up as another crazy left-turn during Luffy's prison break but then have to withdraw from Wano (maybe Blackbeard enters her territory) so the arc can re-center on Kaido.

Ashura Doji dying would be a first. Imagine someone in One Piece dying to a bomb ~~right next to them~~ that isn't even strapped onto your own body, just someone else's.
