I remember that I really enjoyed the Luffy/Ace/Sabo flashback back in the day and didn't want it to end. I reminded me of early Naruto with little kids coming of age and making their way in the world. This Oden flashback feels like early One Piece where it was all about adventure and interactions between the crew. Couple that with some awesome characters we didn't get to see much of in the main series and you've got yourself a winner. | ||

The witch is probably Orochi's grandma, wife of the Daimyo who killed the other Daimyos, but never specified. Almost definitely one of his relatives that was forced out of the country when Orochi's grandfather was forced to kill himself. Orochi did not eat the mane mane fruit, he has the 8 Headed snake fruit. The fruit sitting there appears to have 8 leafs that turn into heads. That is probably his 8 headed snake fruit and he probably ate it at that point and actually had the ability the whole time, even while working under Yasuie. The witch dies sometime later, not specified yet and Mr 2 somehow got it. There is a character on Whitebeard's ship (page 4) that looks a bit like Mr 2 with a ponytail, although that's probably just a coincidence. (edit: the age would not work out) So it was actually the witch impersonating Oden that helped get Orochi into Sukiyaki's employ. They likely poisoned Sukiyaki and then it was the witch impersonating Sukiyaki that handed the country over to Orochi. Pretty underhanded stuff. That fruit is pretty dangerous in underhanded hands. | ||

Could it be perhaps a CP0 agent setting up Orochi as the ruler of Wano and their marionette? Also, is that the first devil fruit user (and the first devil fruit) featured in the flashback? Given the unknown origin of the DFs, it would not be impossible for them to not appear natively in Wano. Although maybe they do, since Kanjuro and Kinemon posses those in the present and I doubt they would receive from the shogunate before the time travel. Maybe Oden brought the fruits for his retainers? | ||

Maybe Oden brought the fruits for his retainers? The CP0 agent setting up Orochi is an interesting idea. From what we can tell, Wano doesn't know anything about devil fruits and their abilities. They just say anything related to devil fruits is either a form of magic or ninjutsu. This means it wouldn't make sense for the old lady, a resident of Wano, to know that pineapple fruit is a devil fruit and that it will give Orochi a devil fruit power. She also named her own devil fruit. | ||
