Because of this, Luffy still needs a way to counter Blackbeard's Yami fruit, which pulls things in with Gravity. Notice how Kuma's Nikyu fruit "repels" -- the fruit is a polar opposite of what the Yami fruit essentially does.
Essentially, it'll be a battle between Gravitation versus Repulsion, which makes sense.
Kuma works closely enough with Vegapunk, and given Kuma helping out Luffy -- one of the conditions could be a way to pull out the devil fruit from Kuma at one point and giving it to Luffy (this part is speculation)
Dunno I thought it was really fascinating -- that Luffy will find "some way" of getting this second devil's fruit :O
That's really interesting. One thing I'd like to point out with my limited knowledge of Japanese is that those numbers aren't all using the same counting system, meaning the missing 2,9 is not limited to just Nikyu. I don't know what the Japanese meaning would be, or if there are such words, but other viable devil fruits that fit the 2,9 would be niko, fuko, fukyu, fuku, and niku (meat, lol how fitting for Luffy). Regardless, based on the fact of numbered fruits and Oda's refusal to comment, I think it's pretty believable someone (new or old member) will get a fruit numbered 2,9.
The other part of the theory with the nikyu being needed to counter the yami fruit (note that yami can be numbered 8,3) is well thought out but I just don't like the idea of Luffy getting a new devil fruit power, especially with what sounds like the purpose of defeating Blackbeard. Also, since the Gura fruit is not numbered, Luffy's 2nd fruit, should be obtain one, does not necessarily need to be numbered. This would reflect a numbered and non-numbered dual devil fruit battle. It would be really interesting if there was something special about numbered fruits such as they can "co-exist" with non-numbered fruits, allowing a person to have 2 powers. This would explain why Blackbeard can have both the yami and gura fruit. Or perhaps only special people can handle the power of numbered fruits, similar to what Marcus alluded to when Blackbeard stole the gura fruit.

One thing I don't get is this: Blackbeard fought Shanks sometime and gave him that scar. Then, he fought Ace and it was pretty close. How strong was Blackbeard?

I'm guessing he did something underhanded in terms of attacking Shanks. Keep in mind that both of them are since stronger. He beat Ace almost solely because of his DF and not because of any sort of fighting ability.
Also blackbeard is taking DFs from other people and giving them to his crew, so he obviously has done a great amount of research on them and figured out some way to not only extract the DF from a person, but put it into another one.

Just dropping in and am happy to see more future speculation and theories in this thread! So I'll give you mine that I'm 95% sure is true and maybe everyone already knows. The strawhat is one piece. Because Gol D Roger was happy go lucky adventurous guy. Since he left everything he owns in one piece. Which is the hat that he has! As far as I have seen none of the Yonko are even attempting to get the "treasure". I believe this is because they already have it! The treasure is adventure. Gol D Roger just gave out a false statement making it seem like real treasure when all its really doing is making people become pirates and going on an adventure.
This could also tie into the fact that Gol D Roger has read all the Poneglyphs. So maybe he just hyped it up so that they can rebel against the World Government again. That last part is more speculation but I think that it's more on the "just go out and have a "adventure".

I don't know if I am the only one who doesn't follow but I don't understand what the numbers mean. Is there a list of all the fruits in the OP universe and those are the corresponding ones on the list or something?

Also to those not liking the possibility of a fight with Big Mam so soon I believe should reconsider. Think back to all the big names that Luffy has fought. The only one that came close to recognizing him as strong prior to the battle ending was Crocodile. To which he believe he sad something to the degree of a pirates fight is a fight to death I recognize you as an obstacle I must overcome during the third portion of their fight in the underground tomb. This early fight with one of the Yonkou could be more about respect than anything else so the world really realizes he is up there on the top tier. People will say well even though Big Mam wasn't the strongest yonkou out there you know Luffy still bear her that at least says something.
There are plenty of enemies still in the new world
People have mentioned the other Yonkou, the marines, and the supernovas not to mention any new rookies that also went to the new world during the time skip.
There is also the shishibukai even thought they mainly dabble in the first half the grandline I see it as unlikely that Buggy (speculation) and Doflamingo will never make an appearance again.
But what I think alot of people are forgetting is that marines have now been granted unprecedented powers. Some people in the one piece government are apparently very corrupt. There are those that have been around for a while and possibly have some idea about the void century and those who are possibly just assholes.
Sengoku did seem like he had some idea about what happened in the VC and because of that he kept the marines a bit more passive. With Akainu behind the helm of the marines who seems like an asshole and at least has some idea about the VC the marines will be much more active this is apparent from the fact that he moved the Marine HQ to the new world. Some of this is theory of course but what is certain is there will be plenty of people for the strawhats to fight.

No, it's a direct translation of the words that make up the devil fruit's ability (oh you pun-y manga writers!).
One to ten goes a little something like this (you can probably google a more accurate result, and each number seems to have several names judging from the list in the post you quoted):
1 - ichi
2 - nii
3 - san
4 - yon
5 - go
6 - roku
7 - nana
8 - hachi
9 - kyuu
10 - juu
So, "hana" is hachi (8) and nana(7). The two numbers missing are as stated 2 and 9, or "nikyu" - the "repel" devil's fruit.
Hope that clears it up.

And keep in mind the fight between Big Man isn't going to happen really soon. Their ships were slightly damaged, and it would probably take a while to get to Fishman Island. Straw Hats will most likely meet her on her island. While a Yonkou is of course strong, getting their entire crew over to fishman island would be tough, because Big Mam can't take on all the Straw Hats by herself imo.

Oda doesn't pull shit randomly out of his ass, he plan everything out and put seeds that can be used later all over the place, if you go back and re read the manga you will notice the little things.

i reread thriller bark and it's pretty interesting how in the same arc you see both the full destruction capabilities of both kuma's nikyu fruit and blackbeard's darkness fruit :O
i really think luffy needs that fruit to fight blackbeard

I only picked this up recently, and its seriously one of the best manga series I have read, first time I picked it up, I stayed up to like 1am reading to like chapter 230 (school days), and didn't read for a long time
Holidays come, and when I get home, I start reading from like 10pm->6am, doing around 100 chapters per day like that, and managed to catch up to 652, and MAN THIS SHIT IS AMAZING. It's nothing like Naruto which is pretty fcking boring right now, but One Piece always manages to keep you entertained, truth be told, this is the only manga that's nearly made me cry at two points of the story: Chopper backstory and the Norland backstory.
Can't fucking wait for the next chapters to come out, seriously, I miss not being able to just keep reading, and realizing birds are chirping outside already.
