Just watched 2 documentaries on the film industry that I highly recommend.
This film is not yet rated:
A documentary about the MPAA, the shadowy group that gives age rating to movies in the US. It's very entertaining and it gives an interesting look at an incredibly important, yet generally unknown part of the film industry.
An open secret
A documentary about child abuse in Hollywood and the use of children in the film industry. (watched this one in the light of the elijah wood revelations). It's a pretty dark and cold movie that doesn't let itself be sensationalist and really focuses on the effect the industry has on children.

One of the slimiest, morally impaired, misanthropic, terrifying but excellent performances I've seen on film. It's a reflection on how the public's desire for bloodier and scarier news stories push people like Gyllenhaal's character to push the boundaries of what we consider ethical for a good report. Anyone interested in media, journalism or just great acting and tense moments should watch this.
I love that movie and I loved his performance. He portrayed the sociopath SO well. Also + Show Spoiler +
I kinda lost it in the scene where he was filming after they broke in and the shots were fired. It was super tense but at the same time super stupid when you think about it, because he's there, all alone (no more actual danger), with that music playing.. and then it hit me... he's just fucking filming shit. It's a movie (you know where they film people), where the main character is filming other stuff and people, which became kind of absurd and hilarious at that moment. Then that last scene, was gut-wrenching to an extent I haven't felt in alot of movies.. such mercilessness and the way it was portrayed, absolutely terrific!

I kind of enjoyed Escaflowne in this way. As the story unfolds it can be really gripping.
Classic Disney animation film. Great little story, bit cheesy at times but understandable as it is a kids film. Some very funny moments though and a pretty interesting story, i didn't expect the ending haha! Solid feel good film.
it was decent, funny, completely true to the series. not A grade but fun and funny
oh shit did i not mention this one
i watched Patema Inverted, its another anime movie, its a hard scifi in a fantasy setting (like Shinsekai Yori) which follows a young girl and guy . i love this style so much
Deadpool - Real fun movie. Had a smile throughout the film. Being R-Rated and not your typical Marvel movie, I was pleasantly surprised to see some cameos in there.
Star Wars FA - got bored easily. Nothing much to add to the franchise except new faces to an old story. Need a better villain too. But cool Death Star.
The Hateful Eight - Not as spectacular as I expected but still a good Tarantino flick. Film length could use some trimming. Same problem with Inglorious Basterds.
The 33 - Hollywood-ized version of the Chilean mine collapse story. It is entertaining but some of the alterations from the real story feels unnecessarily distracting.

That is 1/2 of the first two DVDs my family had in 1999.
That's because you didn't have 1989 Cyborg VHS...
Nope the other DVD besides the matrix was Starship Troopers. I remember there being quite the contest for TV time because my parents had just gotten the first season of Soprano's on VHS. Still have it to my knowledge

ah, there is truly just no accounting for tastes..
Hahaha it was a formative experience because I no longer had to fast forward or rewind from places on a VHS casette where my parents could reasonably infer my brother or myself had been looking at stuff we shouldn't have been.
Starship Troopers is a fantastic, ironic classic.; it is a great example of filter-less Sci-fi and gratuitous violence.
I really don't get all the flak this movie is getting. It's a damn fine fairy tale and I've enjoyed watching it a lot.
It probably depends on how many of the similar ilk you've seen in the last few years.
Snow White and the Huntsman. Maleficent. Alice. A lot more that I've forgotten.
Take classic story. Give everyone armour and swords (and cut all the "weak" characters from the story). Make generic fairy tail villain into generic evil dictator villain. CG up a big armor. Try to cash in on the "gritty dark" fantasy genre that Game of Thrones has made the fanbase for.
It's tiresome and formulaic, and absolutely none of those movies have made any lasting impressions.
