Into the Wild Overrated... I like the fact it's based on a true story, and I understand the point of what it was trying to show, but it was not done extraordinarily well. 6.5/10
Downfall I know this is like... a really popular movie, but first time seeing it for me. It was well made, I was surprised how accurately it depicted history. If you enjoy a power WW2 movie, definitely give it a watch. 8/10
Imitation Game Damn, not really sure why I liked this so much... Cryptography, smart people, relatively close to history... Deep human interactions, a lot was on the line, touching. 8.5/10
note: If you enjoy action in your movies, don't ever listen to my recommendations. If you like feels, and movies that make you think and question, then take my recommendations.

i thought into the wild came off a bit too glamorous for what its trying to do. i'd rewatch it tho
not sure if i'd watch Downfall but i'll get it now and see same with imitation game, but i just read a blog on turing and he's cool, maybe ill try it out too
i watched
taken 2 - roffle if you like waffles the interview (comedy) - not good but not bad, entertaining modern comedy for as long as you last

Imitation game wasn't historically accurate. For instance + Show Spoiler +the machine was called the bombe, not the christophe, and the girl knew he was gay from the beginning.
It's not really a thinking movie either. It's got a lot of cliche hollywood scenes to build drama. I'd categorize it more as a drama than a philosophical movie.

Bombes were the crude decryption engines previously used notably by Polish cryptographers. It mentioned one by name if I recall correctly.

I just watched Escape Plan
I'd rate it in 2 ways.
There's a lot of plot holes and it's kind of cliché, so in terms of actual the movie being GOOD, I'd say 5/10. However. It has Stallone and Schwarzenegger starring in it along with a group of other awesome actors and the action's just great. Some of the humor and lines in the film really make you chuckle. So in terms of ''fun I've had watching it'' it's an 8.5/10. It's just awesome.

it was interesting at first then became shitty around after 2/3 of the movie

Birdman felt like the hipster version of American Snipers. City dwelling liberals will love it as much as rednecks who love American Sniper hate it.
And despite all the Hollywoody things -- boy good thing the sexy chess guy wanted to bone Kierra Knightly's friend on that particularly night and used that particularly pick up line instead of some other one so they could finally figure out how to crypto things or tywinn lannister would have fired all the decryption people and the allies would have lost the war -- I still liked it. Cumbersnatch, Mark Strong (how the fuck is this guy not in a major role in a good movie yet, how many good supporting roles is he going to turn in before Hollywood gets its shit together?), and Dance together. Nice.

Like I said, relatively close to history.
In honest truth, pretty much every movie based on a true story, yet following it precisely would very boring. Think King's Speech, A Beautiful Mind, Last Samurai... etc etc.
So yeah, I'm sure they do things to make it more interesting, but from I read up on it for 20 minutes after watching the movie, it seemed relatively accurate. Although like you said, it is not very thinking heavy for my average preferences; still enjoyed other components of it though.
Also:
From recommendation of Page 250~, I watched "Before Sunshine" (1995), and thought it was an alright romance/drama movie. It was a pretty feel good movie, with a predictable plot, with the exception of maybe the end.... But it didn't really follow the recipe of modern movies of the genre, and I enjoyed the message it sent.
If you have nothing better to watch, give it a try. However, I don't really recommend it as a movie to watch if your girlfriend/wife wants to see a chick flick, romance, or whatever. 7/10

I'd argue (seriously) it's the best trilogy of all time from top to bottom, over Star Wars. Godfather loses cause of 3.
|
Because Return of the Jedi is not terrible? Tssss. Trilogy seems like quite an arbitrary stuff too, but the "best XXX of all times" discussion are funny imo, so I won't start being pedantic and annoying you with Kieslowski or Kobayashi :p
|
Yeah, my bad. I meant Before Sunrise. I suppose I'll give the other ones a watch as well if the recommendations are good. I felt the story finished quite well after the first one, curious to see what they did with the sequels.
They all have about the same 8/10 IMDB ratings, so that's a relatively good sign at first sight.
|
Before Sunrise was pretty good, but I found myself getting bored during it at points. They were highly recommended so that was disappointing to me. Maybe it's just not our thing?

John Wick : Really good action movie, I kinda liked the lore around the movie, I wonder if there is a more detailed story about it. 8/10
Her : I like the idea of making a movie about "good" AI instead of the usual world domination/destruction AI. I'm so in love with Johansson and her voice too. Overall a good ride. 8.5/10

Wild with reese witherspoon (still hot), worth the watch & imdb rating of 7,3 is imo accurate

The Prestige was pretty excellent. It's a story of rivalry and Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale play their parts excellently. With Nolan's directing, it's definitely worth a watch. The plot isn't realistic whatsoever, but it's still pretty exciting to watch. I'd say it's very solid for a movie that you just want to enjoy, as long as you don't try to dissect the science of it since it's completely implausible.

Really enjoyed American History X. It's one of Edward Norton's best performances, and it depicts a pretty brutal reality of racial tension in America, especially in light of the racial tensions over the last few months. Great movie, although some of the scenes are a bit brutal.

AHX is soo freaking good, that 1 scene, terrifying.

The Truman Show They don't make movies like this anymore. It's got the whole alternate universe feel as Groundhog day.
Jim Carrey plays a more serious perhaps hysterical world where his life is one big reality TV show. It's dismissive commentary of people who watch reality TV shows instead of doing stuff on their own. It implores you to take risks and do things rather than live a very safe but boring life.
It was a bit inhuman to keep someone in a TV show like that.
I'd say the movie was funny but I don't think I laughed during the entire movie.
