Watched the early screening and god bless if you guys watched the first one, you HAVE to watch this one. This sequel takes the beautiful chemistry between Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill to a whole new level and the movie is just generally laughs from start to end. The whole theater was cracking up after every other scene, so I have to digress, this movie is a must-watch comedy.
9.5/10 I'd heard that 22 Jump Street was awful, but I'm not sure whether people have been giving it a fair shot or were put off by the apparently crappy trailer. Also, digress means to leave the main topic of a conversation momentarily. I'm not sure what word you meant to use there.

Anyway, I do highly recommend reading the manga. It explains a lot more about the purpose and origins of the insects and the Sea of Corruption. It's a lot longer--I have the four "Perfect Collections" and the movie is less than the first book, though the storyline is quite different, albeit with the same themes. The characters are much better developed accordingly, and other insects get more showtime too, though the Ohmu are still the most important.
Also, in the movie, Mark Hamill does voice acting too, I believe.

This is one of the best from them that I've seen. It's worse than Spirited Away and about as good as Castle in the Sky, Future Boy Conan and Princess Mononoke. It has the same animation style as those from the same time(Conan, Castle), which is enjoyable, although obviously not as good as later styles. The thing that amazed me the most about this movie was how many of the underlying themes this movie shares with most of the later Miyazaki movies. Air travel being the main method of getting around, environmentalism and pacifism, post-apocalypticism brought on by humans, etc. In particular, the Tolmekian airship looks a lot like the Giganto in Future Boy Conan. All of the related movies from this time up until Pom Poko(although I've yet to see Porco Rosso) share these traits heavily. The plot is solid, although sometimes a bit overblown. All of the little extras like the details of the different societies' planes, and the glider used by Nausicaa really stood out to me as well thought out. The world it is built in was interesting, and serves as a good backdrop for the story. 2 things that bothered me were the problems with the evolution of the toxic jungle + Show Spoiler +Why would it evolve to remove all of the toxic from the ground in such a short time? It seems like intelligent design or a bad plot point. It's possible they were experimental versions being developed before the apocalypse that thrived in the new environment. and a bit of a lack of exploration of the jungle. We get shown plenty of cool insect types but the only one that really gets shown much is the Ohm. It makes sense that it's skimmed to facilitate the movie, but it bugs me. Maybe it was in the original manga. Also, Shia LaBeouf does the voice of the secondary character back when he was working for Disney. It's weird to recognize his voice out of nowhere, but he does a good job. Patrick Stewart and Uma Therman also do voice work. + Show Spoiler +The Secret World of ArriettyOne thing is certain about this movie - it is beautifully animated. It is one of the nicest looking anime movies I have ever seen. The basic plot is fairly similar to other adaptations of the original Borrowers book. If you've never seen any of them it's worth checking out for the plot. If you have, it's interesting to see how it compares to the other adaptations. However, in my opinion, the plot isn't what draws you into this movie - it's the world it establishes. Even down to the small details like the surface tension of water on such a small scale, this movie gets a lot of important things right. One of the reviews says the movie is "equally interested in observing raindrops and the worries of a race of minuscule beings" and I have to agree. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so. Especially when it's made mesmerizing by the level of animation. This is not a movie that will become legendary. It is a movie that is solidly done, and can be put on without offending anyone for a nice watch. I'd imagine it'd be great for children to watch. For more information check out the Wikipedia Critical Reception. Most of the reviews in there are accurate.
Once you're done, you should also look at a game called Ni No Kuni if you've not, Art direction was done by Ghibli and it is basically a playable movie. Combat is a bit wonky, but it is an enjoyable experience.

The Notebook + Show Spoiler +Wurt? U mean da old man and the old lady were the people from da story the hole time?
The characters are too perfect. Builds unrealistic expectations in romance. I didn't find the story or characters too interesting. The female lead just sat there and looked pretty. I'd prefer if she actually did something in the romance rather than just wait to be courted. While their love did last and it's nice to see a man love his wife into old age, I don't think the way they showed it was that special.
I think the movie's alright. Just nothing special and plays to all the stereotypes of romance movies where a Knight in shining armor comes a long and woos a girl from a rival family or something.
American Psycho Steve_Harvey_Face.jpgThese people be crazy! I'd heard about this movie in this thread a few times long ago. It's a bit too insane for my preferences. All these drug using business folk who don't care about anything and whores who want to fuck the guy because he's rich and handsome.
It's very pessimistic about people and perhaps specifically women and business people. They don't recognize each other as individuals, lie through their teeth, are imbeciles while thinking themselves some sort of superior race, care about frivolous things like business cards and apartment views, and when a woman starts screaming no one comes to her rescue. I also took note of how much cocaine was used. I don't think the drugs were supposed to excuse their actions (The protagonist was never in a health state of mind) but rather to show how little they cared for a large sum of money that they could use it to make themselves feel like pompous douches.
We get this portrayal that business executives do crack cocaine and fuck women all the time and while that may be true generally they do have a lot of work.
I think if you enjoyed wolf of wallstreet you'll enjoy this. A bit too pessimistic for my tastes. It could have showed people's vices without overdramatizing it. Kind of scary, but I think the psychoticness of the character is prevalent in our society (but not acted on). There's lots of torture videos on the deep web and someone has to be watching them. Lots of rape porn and kiddy porn. As long as people don't act on these desires I think it's fine.

I recently watched Children of Men (2006).
It was absolutely wonderful! Its a bleak movie about 20 years after women around the world become sterile and how the world reacts to its imminent demise. The only country left with some kind of order is Great Britain with its own "orwellian" problems. An apathetic alcoholic Brit gets tangled up in a mission to transport a possibility of hope while society crashes down around them. Oh and Michael Caine plays an old lovable pot smoking hippy. =)

I remember seeing this years ago its a great film with a really good atmosphere.

I saw 22 Jump Street. First R rated movie I could get myself into. Worth the $20 for a ticket, popcorn and soda. Probably the funniest movie I've seen in theaters, and almost definitely a top 3 comedy I've ever seen. Ranks up there with Stepbrothers, The Hangover (only the first one), etc. You have to be into high school/college low brow humor and be into jokes about that stuff. It doesn't take itself seriously and makes fun of itself numerous times. It also makes fun of the trend of certain movies being milked to death and using the same plot over and over again.
I highly recommend it, it's probably going to be my favorite movie of the year.

I remember watching this with a bunch of composer friends, and had a great time! Also, it even uses the work "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" by Penderecki (of which I picked out immediately on hearing it). As a composer that really made my evening with that movie. :D

The only other one that really jumps out at me is Departures which I thoroughly enjoyed. Oh, another might be Memento as well if you haven't seen that.
|
Memento was really good, but thanks for the recommendations wo1fwood. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but at the ending I was basically like "WTF!" and couldn't believe that he had intentionally done it.
Departures actually looks pretty good. I play the cello in my high school's orchestra, so I definitely can appreciate a movie with nice music AND a cool plot

Just saw Jack Ryan:Shadow Recruit. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh, I read some of Tom Clancy's books (Debt of Honor, Hunt for Red October, Rainbow Six, reading currently Executive Orders) and I really saw no Tom Clancy~ish elements aside from Cathy and Jack, the plot was nice (Russian wanting to destroy US economy) but I would be more happy if it was more covert and not an action movie.

Saw The Fault in Our Stars: It was OK, I can see the good things in it, but also had annoying aspects.
Also as I said in its own thread, saw Edge of Tomorrow, which falls into the great watch category. I have nothing to be critical about with it, it held together well, flowed and it was fun to watch, exactly what I want with a blockbuster type movie.

Pretty amazing film. The last parts were maybe too fast. About a girl in post WWII Poland who's about to take her vow to become a nun, and takes a trip with her aunt to find where where her mother is buried.

Holy fuck. I dont think I've ever seen a movie with that type of ending before, please don't spoil yourself, just watch it. Saw this one yesterday, thanks to you. It was an a-typical movie. It reminded me of how weird and twisted Donnie Darko was. But that was mostly due to the fact Jake starred in both movies and they're both weird and a-typical.
As for the movie itself. It was pretty good. Nice acting, interesting story. But i had to read some reviews afterward to make sense of it all. After i did, all i can say is that the brilliance of this story is amazing.
For people that want to see this one; don't expect much action, fast passed storytelling or even dialogue.
