Holy fuck. I dont think I've ever seen a movie with that type of ending before, please don't spoil yourself, just watch it.
You know I just watched this and I must say I hated the ending because it just fucks up everything. The pregnant wife's performance was brilliant though. Having seen 3 of his films now, I think Villeneuve is a great stylist but when he tries to play tricks, they expose him as shallow.
To clarify, the ending makes it so that the entire movie can be seen as having taken place inside his head, and that just ruins the possibilities and the general "metaphysical" feel of the film. I think a much better treatment is shown in double life of veronique, where the psychological remained untouched, and hence the film does not veer into cliches, and the doppelgänger isn't just a tyler durden.
I just finished watching it, and I can't help but agree with you regarding the ending. They practically threw a wet blanket over the whole thing.
Four kids from Louisville, Kentucky start a band in mid-80's. Later, the band will become the most influential act to ever emerge from their state, split up after releasing only two albums and produce four outstanding musicians separately working with post-rock, punk, blues, slowcore, indie and many more projects. The film mainly consists of the interviews with those four, now-grown-up kids as well as their friends, neighbours and parents (I repeat: they were crazy young when they started). There's also some unreleased footage from their old rehearsals plus fragments of live songs off their releases. Nothing too amazing unless you're Slint fan and want to learn more about this legendary band that was supposedly led to success by mysterious figure of drummer Britt Walford, who even today, despite being 44, looks a lot like a nerdy teenager. Solid rockumentary. 7/10
A million ways to die in the west - Awful. I'm upset I spent money on this.
Edge of tomorrow - Pretty awesome. There were some opportunities I feel were missed, and details I wish they had gone into more. Still, it was a lot of fun, and visually pretty impressive. I saw it in Imax 3-d and am glad I did.
Standard thriller with Liam Neeson being the star of the movie. Did not expect the twist at all so great job by the directors to mislead the audience on who the true 'culprit' is.
Getting back into a movie watching routine so I'll probably post more on here, but just wanted to plug this now since I absolutely adored it. It gets pulled from netflix june 12 I believe, I definitely recommend it; it's also on amazon prime for those who have that or a free trial for that (for people who may be shying away from pirating). I just watched it today
Very fast (80 minute) film that is very fun and cute. It's mainly about two chocolatiers with severe social anxiety, and they form a relationship.
I would give it about a 9.5/10 or 9/10, but the last 20 minutes or so was a bit weak. Just unable to really close out the story, or at least just felt a little bit silly.
I loved the vast majority of the film (it was funny when it needed to be, upbeat, etc). If you want to see a romcom, definitely see it.
edit--also recently watched Odd Thomas (2013) earlier this week
I rather liked it. Quick and fun, granted nothing super special but critics/reviews heavily disliked it while the audience ratings are favourable. It was definitely better than, say, John Dies at the End
about a guy that can interact with the dead and kinda see death coming. I'd recommend it if you take it light heartedly. Maybe 6.5/10 or 7/10.
Wow, I think this is the longest I have gone without posting in this thread. I guess it's fortunate that I haven't seen many movies since my last post here..
Welcome to Dongmakgol - This seems to be pretty highly regarded as far as Korean movies go, and I can see why. I really enjoyed the characters in this movie a lot (especially the girl) and how the movie went from being very serious to laughing at the different scenes in the movie. Definitely one of my favorite Korean movies now.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Marvel seems to be shitting out these superhero movies faster and faster it seems (guess it makes sense, they seem to always be popular and bringing in a lot of money). Found the first Captain America movie to be pretty meh but I was kinda impressed at how much they improved on it. Loved the action in it, and it was cool, if not a bit wtf, to see the GSP cameo in it.
Godzilla - Decided to see the new Godzilla when it came out despite never really watching any of the old movies. It was alright and definitely had some cool scenes in it. I was just disappointed that Cranston's character played such a small role, and the fact that we don't really see Godzilla much in it. So much time is spent with these soldiers that don't really add much to the movie and just take up way too much screen time. It's a promising reboot though so assuming they are making more Godzilla films, I look forward to them.
X-Men: Days of Future Past - Pretty damn good, although I confess to not being the biggest X-Men fan. Really only watched First Class. Was cool to see Dinklage in it though, didn't know he had a role in it before I watched.
Beyond Outrage - Sequel to the first Outrage film that I enjoyed. Did not find this as good. Very dialogue heavy and the movie just feels plodding for the longest time before anything meaningful happens. If you enjoyed Kitano's other movies, it might be worth a watch.
We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks - Documentary about Wikileaks from it's beginning to it's now somewhat uncertain future. If you ever wanted to know more about the organization (especially people a part of it who aren't Assange) then this is a great watch. Was very insightful.
Chinatown - I know what you're thinking. "What the fuck? you just now watched it for the first time!?". Yes, I admit to never watching this sooner and I regret it. Great noir film and Nicholson is great as the private investigator who gets in over his head. Can easily see why this is regarded as a classic. + Show Spoiler +
Edge of Tomorrow - pretty good! I wish I didn't watch the trailer beforehand though, would've added a lot more mystery to the story. Good choice to cast Emily Blunt.
I saw 22 Jump Street in theater this weekend. Worst movie i've been to this year. This movie is even more gay than Brokeback Mountain was. They just use every opportunity to insert some gay reference to somehow point out their bromance. The first 30 mins i was enjoying the movie and whatever happened, but after that it became hugely annoying. Before the movie started i saw on IMDB it had a 8,2(!). However, i rate this movie at 4/10.
I also saw the X-men movie this weekend. As a fanboy of anything Marvell, i of course <3 this one too. I can't say much more, just that i liked it a lot. Scored the movie 9/10 which might be too much, but i just enjoy these movies

Yeah that's what I was thinking too.
I saw it this past weekend. It was much better than I expected. I mean, it's not going to get Oscar nods or anything like that but it was extremely watchable.

If there was one 80s series that never needed to be made into a movie it was 21 Jump Street. I would prefer a Jeffersons Movie.

Well the first one was funny. And that was pretty refreshing after all those reboots that are being made darker and darker. But this one... this was just ridiculous.

I disagree, as far fetched as it seems, I still think what we see is real, the lesson he gives his class I think pretty much sums the movie up. Doppelgangers were real. There are too many questions left by "all girls are this dudes enemy."
I also watched Xmen: Days of Futures Past.
Despite the overuse of cgi and videogame nonsense the movie was pretty gripping. The acting was absurd from everyone.
Just saw 300: Rise of an Empire . For some reason I kinda like the fight scenes than the first 300. Didn't bother on historical accuracy, i just enjoyed the movie esp. the scene of Eva Green
Watched the early screening and god bless if you guys watched the first one, you HAVE to watch this one. This sequel takes the beautiful chemistry between Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill to a whole new level and the movie is just generally laughs from start to end. The whole theater was cracking up after every other scene, so I have to digress, this movie is a must-watch comedy.
I've been working my way through Ghibli's movies and am nearing the end of the list. This is one of the best from them that I've seen. It's worse than Spirited Away and about as good as Castle in the Sky, Future Boy Conan and Princess Mononoke. It has the same animation style as those from the same time(Conan, Castle), which is enjoyable, although obviously not as good as later styles.
The thing that amazed me the most about this movie was how many of the underlying themes this movie shares with most of the later Miyazaki movies. Air travel being the main method of getting around, environmentalism and pacifism, post-apocalypticism brought on by humans, etc. In particular, the Tolmekian airship looks a lot like the Giganto in Future Boy Conan. All of the related movies from this time up until Pom Poko(although I've yet to see Porco Rosso) share these traits heavily.
The plot is solid, although sometimes a bit overblown. All of the little extras like the details of the different societies' planes, and the glider used by Nausicaa really stood out to me as well thought out. The world it is built in was interesting, and serves as a good backdrop for the story. 2 things that bothered me were the problems with the evolution of the toxic jungle
Why would it evolve to remove all of the toxic from the ground in such a short time? It seems like intelligent design or a bad plot point. It's possible they were experimental versions being developed before the apocalypse that thrived in the new environment.
and a bit of a lack of exploration of the jungle. We get shown plenty of cool insect types but the only one that really gets shown much is the Ohm. It makes sense that it's skimmed to facilitate the movie, but it bugs me. Maybe it was in the original manga.
Also, Shia LaBeouf does the voice of the secondary character back when he was working for Disney. It's weird to recognize his voice out of nowhere, but he does a good job. Patrick Stewart and Uma Therman also do voice work.
The Secret World of Arrietty
One thing is certain about this movie - it is beautifully animated. It is one of the nicest looking anime movies I have ever seen.
The basic plot is fairly similar to other adaptations of the original Borrowers book. If you've never seen any of them it's worth checking out for the plot. If you have, it's interesting to see how it compares to the other adaptations. However, in my opinion, the plot isn't what draws you into this movie - it's the world it establishes. Even down to the small details like the surface tension of water on such a small scale, this movie gets a lot of important things right. One of the reviews says the movie is "equally interested in observing raindrops and the worries of a race of minuscule beings" and I have to agree. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so. Especially when it's made mesmerizing by the level of animation.
This is not a movie that will become legendary. It is a movie that is solidly done, and can be put on without offending anyone for a nice watch. I'd imagine it'd be great for children to watch.
