I always thought Mel Brooks's movies were a bit too telegraphed for my tastes. I get it for the time, but I dunno, I guess I spent too much time around people quoting them growing up. :/

You are not alone in that regard, Mr. Servo.

but why just pictures? we couldn't at least get your opinion of them? some conversation? just pictures? snooze

Spaceballs is easily one of the worst Mel Brooks, Blazing Saddles is a great comedy, far better than whatever Django Unchained was. The Producers and Young Frankenstein are good as well. Hey both are offensive westerns, one is more of a spaghetti ripof- tribute, but both are satire.

Django Unchained and Blazing Saddles is one of the strangest movie comparisons I've seen.

I'm currently on a bit of a comedy trip, so I watched a lot of them. And I realized that the best ones are still the ones I liked as a kid, in particular Spaceballs and Naked Gun. Dude, Where's My Car I just found recently and I find that it is vastly underrated. Humor is obviously highly personal and it's hard to describe why I like this kind of stuff.
Other comedies that I liked: Anchorman Borat Three Amigos The Hangover Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Enemy* 2013: Jake Gyllenhaal
Holy fuck. I dont think I've ever seen a movie with that type of ending before, please don't spoil yourself, just watch it.

Boyhood 2014 ★★★★½ out of ★★★★★
Watched Jun 03, 2014 butchji’s review: A very rare experience which didn't bore me one second.
I think the film could've used some more slower/silent/reflecting moments without happening special/significant stuff in his life all the time (birthday, graduation, going camping, drama with abusive father...). So I guess I would like this film better with 180 minutes or something (instead of 164).
Mason (the boy) is a little too perfect. He never does or says anything that could rub any viewer the wrong way. Linklater depends a little too much on every viewer falling in love with Mason. We would care about him even if he had some flaws! His life is basically a template on how society thinks the standardized life of a growing up boy should look like. When he comes out of college he will have the perfect résumé, be a good employee and be a useful part of society!
I liked the depiction Samantha, the boy's sister. She was a little cheeky but it never went overboard with the bitchyness of pubertal girls. A bad example (imo) would be the daughter in the series Homeland who is almost a caricature of pubertal girls. Definitely some good writing all over the place by Linklater.
This is a must see not only for Linklater fans but film fans in general.

Linklater is the man, and the bane of freshman philosophy professors around the world, but I am looking forward to check this out. I'll probably have to check the indie theaters to see it.

Worst movie of 2014 right here, even worse than Amazing Spiderman in the entertainment department. Plot, characters, music, etc everything sucks balls except some beautiful sceneries. Two-third of the room is filled with kids and they are not as interested as watching Spiderman. I love Disney, fantansy fairytale and everything but this movie man, I dont even
I feel robbed. Shoulda watch Chef
5/10. IMDB seems so inflated these days

2010: The Year we Make Contact.
2001's 1984 sequel. Finally decided to watch it after a life time of delaying. I want to vomit and sob. It's funny how a movie 15 years newer than 2001 can seem infinitely more dated.

Except it doesn't. It's only at 7.2.
It's very normal that films based on some franchise (e.g. The Hobbit) have an abnormally high rating right after the release because mostly the fanboys will (blindly) vote with a 10 out of 10.

That was kind of what I was referring to. When I saw Godzilla, it had a 9.2 on IMDb. Even a 7.2 is way higher than I think it deserves. It probably shouldn't get higher than a 6, if we're being generous.

I give it an eight which means 7.2 is pretty good, eh?

Lego Movie Very good movie. It made me chuckle a few times. I think younger kids would have loved it when it came out.
Two Guns This movie was nonstop action. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting wasn't bad either. It's obviously a bit unrealistic + Show Spoiler +With the 2 vs 20 shootouts but it was still fun.
About Time I actually hated the protagonist and felt he was always abusing his power to improve his own life with little consequence to the lives of others. Also there's a bit of a discontinuity with the movie. + Show Spoiler +The father tells the son he can only travel backwards in time, but he brings his sister forwards. . The message didn't really have enough evidence to really support it. But if you're looking for a romance this is fine. The protagonist is more realistic because of all his flaws.

Harsh Times(2006)
Really underrated movie starring Christian Bale as a 'bro' who comes back home to LA after a stint in the military.
Its interesting, if a little slow, and it gets very dark and intense. Would recommend 7.5/10

You know I just watched this and I must say I hated the ending because it just fucks up everything. The pregnant wife's performance was brilliant though. Having seen 3 of his films now, I think Villeneuve is a great stylist but when he tries to play tricks, they expose him as shallow.
+ Show Spoiler +To clarify, the ending makes it so that the entire movie can be seen as having taken place inside his head, and that just ruins the possibilities and the general "metaphysical" feel of the film. I think a much better treatment is shown in double life of veronique, where the psychological remained untouched, and hence the film does not veer into cliches, and the doppelgänger isn't just a tyler durden.
