Hey guys, I am learning german and I am looking for some movies in german.
I have very little knowledge about them, basically the ones that I know that come to mind are Good Bye Lenin, Aguirre, Funny Games and Downfall. If you guys could recommend some, it would be greatly appreciated!
And since I´m here, let´s contribute to the thread:

Funny Games: I watched only the original (not the remake) and it has strong moments, but I didn´t like it as much as I thought I would. The plot is basically about two guys that hold a family hostage and torture them with some "games". The violence is mostly psychological, with few really graphical scenes (one scene is pretty memorable though) and you get really tense and feel for the family and the situation they are in.
Characters are interesting and actors do a good job, with Paul (Arno Frisch) stealing the show most of the time + Show Spoiler +even breaking the fourth wall a few times . The movie also criticizes some cliches and plot development that you can see in most movies of the genre, surprising you in some scenes.
Overral I think I liked it and it definitely is a memorable movie, but I guess I had bigger expectations going in.

^ worst movie of all time imo, but I've already talked about it before :p Three german movies suggestion (didn't include silent one for obvious reason) : M and Wings of Desire, The Marriage of Maria Braun. Among those you mentionned I heartily recommend Aguirre. The Lives of Others is a more recent one, and I think you should enjoy it.

German comedies are mostly bad, those that i could recommend are terrible for people trying to learn german, cause of accents (Sonnenallee comes to mind ) The big time of german movies was the 90s, so, if you like movies of that time, you might find Knockin on heavens door not that bad. But i was young back then, so my judgement might be clouded.

@Rookie6 Lammbock, Das Boot and Der Untergang.
Lammbock is quite funny and tells a story about two completly different friends which drive a 'special' pizza service. It has a more common/slang german. Das Boot should be well known. A story about a submarine crew during ww2. Often times short sentences, which can be anticipated from the scene itself easy, but generally not so easy to listen to.
Der Untergang is a movie about the last days of nazi germany and hitler himself. This movie is probably not easy to follow if you just started learning german.
I've choosen these movies as their production value is enjoyable for german movie standards. If you need special recommandtion on certain topics, don't hesitate to pm me.

Oh thanks! I´m not looking for anything special, just some general suggestions. It´s mostly because I want to practice my listening.. german is pretty awesome by the way

"Der Baader Meinhof Komplex". I dont think it's easy to watch and understand but you get to know a bit about german history after WW2 and its one of the better german films imo.
b2t: hunger games:catching fire imo better than the first one, but nothing extraordinary. jennifer lawrence acts very well but i may have set my expectations too high as i read the three books before.

b2German Movies:
"Bang Boom Bang" (1999) is a really good comedy. A little bit Snatch/Two smoking Barrels style. As far as i remember accent is spoken as well, but not that hard. IMO it's way better than "Lammbock" and "Knocking on heavens door".
"23 - Nichts ist wie es scheint" (1998) is a great movie as well. Early Hacker/Cold War/Illuminati movie, but more than that. Fact and fiction mix. One of the better German movies at least.
"M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder" (1931) (Peter Lorre!) and "Es geschah am hellichten Tag" (1958) (Gert Froebe!). Old, but what to say: A must see imho.

I don't like WW2 movies in general, but I'd highly recommend this as a German movie to watch: "West Berliners dig a tunnel under the Berlin Wall, hoping to get their loved ones out of East Berlin. This is an exciting, fact-based drama that is well acted by a German cast." Der Tunnel (2001)
And for some reason I really enjoyed this one: Nordwand (2008)

Claire Denis - "Les salauds" (Bastards)
![[image loading]](http://filmmusicreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/bastards.jpg)
This was my first Claire Denis film. The story is ruthless, and the way it unfolds is quite interesting. I like how Denis does not try to hide anything despite the film's non-linear narrative. Everything is revealed by the end and quite powerfully. The film deals with abuse and allegorically, colonialism; its roles, responsibilities, motivations, and powers. The only thing I didn't like was the character of Justine's mother, who simply repeats herself throughout the movie. Otherwise it was provoking and visually beautiful.

Prisoners
Amazing. It's been a long time since they released this kind of movie that would be on par with The Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon or No Country For Old Men. This one is definitely in the same league.

I saw Her last tuesday which was followed by a Q and A with the director Spike Jonze afterwards. It was probably my favorite movie of the year and one of the best. It was a lot funnier then the trailers make it out to be. I would say this and 12 years a slave are the two movies that are a must see this year.

I watched A Separation
I'm confused by the rave reviews. I thought it was interesting but just okay. I suspect it's another case of Westerners getting too excited about artists from repressive regimes creating work about the absurdities of their politically/morally/socially backward existences. I understand the director tried with all his might to paint a balanced perspective, and he has, it's just not that powerful.
After reading some reviews all I can see in the acclaim is "omg i thought iran was like totally backward but they're just like us! humanistic, transcendent, universal, A+." I admire the director's aesthetic restraint but I'm fairly certain the movie wouldn't be half as interesting if it wasn't an Iranian film made in the image of the West. I think on the opposite, it's quite alarming that no critics will admit to this.
|
^ I protest, easily one of the best movie I've seen in theater in the last years. I think it's an extremely subtle moral fable, that has little to do with Iran, except formally, brilliantly written (one of the best scenario I've seen), that brings us from moral dilemna to moral dilmena. The 4 main actors are also stunning. The naturalist tone might be an excuse for too dull a directing, but there are still very interesting ideas. A success (not only with the critics, but also with the public) well deserved if you ask me.

Yeah, A Separation is one of the best movies I've seen over the past couple of years. People commenting on how shocked they were about Iran are just ignorant, really.

Kinda shallow. Poor man's Battle Royale. I wouldn't even compare it to Battle Royale because the execs wanted to make it PG for all the kiddies to see it and increase the box office sales. Marketing wise it's smart. Gary Ross wasn't too thrilled about it at first. He wanted it to be grittier. you have to play the hand that you've been dealt.
I'm so confused. Why are you guys watching hunger games? The movie/book targets tween girls.
You're not a 14 yr old girl. You're not the target audience.
