I'M ON FUCKIN' VACATION!

that is the entire movie.

Side Effects 6/10
Pretty mediocre flick. I didn't see the twist coming but I still found it pretty underwhelming because I just didn't care for any of the characters.

Harold and Maude 8.5/10
Quirky movie about a kid, who's obsessed with death, falling in love with a 79-year-old, who's youthful inside. A lot of memorable scenes and dialogue. Though it deals with a lot of heavy issues like suicide, death, and adulthood it's a pretty light-hearted film that'll leave you in a good mood. Highly recommend

Life of Pi 6/10
Watched it in 3D. The scene when he's at the mariana trench at night was gorgeous. I'm a sucker for jellyfish and deep-sea creatures. I hate 3D but that entire sequence used it properly. Other than great looking visuals though, not much else I can say. I was more entertained than I expected but the beginning was too slow and the dialogue was cheesy.

Hitchcock sure knows how to create and keep tension going properly.

Watched The Deer Hunter, I don't get all the praising of this movie. Other than great acting from De Niro and Meryl it was quite boring. The beginning of the movie was too slow for my taste, the wedding was way too long and lost it's point after 5 minutes...
I loved the war parts and what the characters got through and the changes the war did to them, it did brought something new about Vietnam war which was refreshing and great to see.

Coal miners' strike in my home state of Ky. Interesting to see the liberal view minus all the rhetoric. I'm anti union personally, but I do understand why people used to be pro union based on the films portrayal of the events. I didn't like the strikers blocking the roads and attacking--Made it hard to feel sorry for them when they were so destructive--but considering the working conditions I might just lose it and do the same. Whether it's justifiable or not you'll have to decide for yourself.

Typical Michael Moore doing his thing, but since this was one of his earlier ones he isn't as crazy.
I ultimately disagree with his conclusions since I'm not a socialist, but I was able to find some interesting correlations. Poor people do not change their lifestyle when bad things happen. Guy gets laid off and still decides to bring a newborn into the world. Interesting.

Looking for other Docs, not crazy liberal dogma though as the genre is plenty saturated with them.
Suggestions appreciated.

Spoilers to cut down on post length.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Animal Kingdom - This might be the first Aussie movie I have seen...either way this was pretty good.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
The Thing - The 2011 remake. Didn't really like this. Bad CG and the actors didn't do that well I thought. Stick to the Carpenter version.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Despicable Me - Enjoyed this a lot, had some good humor in it as well.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Coraline - A take on the old saying "be careful what you wish for." I would say this is one of the better animated movies I have seen. Surprised it is labeled as a kids movie though as it is rather dark.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Flight - First off, this has to be one of the best filmed plane crash scenes I have seen in a movie, that whole scene was really well directed. Anyways, a plane crashes but there are more questions than answers from the investigation. This is more of character study about a pilot who is a chronic alcoholic and tries to come out guilt free. Thought this was pretty good, it was refreshing to see Denzel take on a more complex character than what he is used to.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
Wreck-it Ralph - This was pretty cool. It's a better movie for gamers though as there are a shitload of references to older games in this.

If you like political stuff, i would highly recommend Fog of War:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317910/
Its pretty much just a long interview, with some documentary stuff in there, but its really interesting, in the way that you really get to see what goes on in the mind of a high ranking politician during war.

I actually came into the movie thinking it was going to be cheesy and dumb. I was pleasantly surprised.
The suspense of something 'bad' happening lurks throughout the entire movie while you fall in love with the two main characters. I was really surprised at how well the movie was done. 85% On Rottentomatoes, and a 90% from me.

Oh yeah, I think it's the best thing I've read written post-2000. Each individual story is styled so interestingly and differently. Especially the movie doesn't really convey the power of the Korea story nor the brilliant storytelling of the post-apocalypse Hawaii story.

Just saw the movie based on your recommendation. The movie was definitely quite powerful. My favorite part was when the woman was speaking about the stars, and that many of them may be burnt out already, but you cannot tell which ones are.

I'm going to defend it as I think it's the best post 1970 american movie I've seen, and the best movie on the Vietnam War by quite a margin.
The length of the scenes are totally necessary, including the opening one, because of two effects : one is narrative and one is poetic. On the narrative side, there is a research for a rupture of rythm between the war scenes and the life back home. On the poetic side, there is a research of something of cosmic proportio that is to be found everywhere.
Thematically this is a fascinating movie. You can see each of those activities (hunt, war, russian roulette) as a metaphor for America's will of power and its confrontation to reality. It is a movie that has completely understood the traumatism of the Vietnam War as an uncomprehensible failure, and by trying to understand the multiple facets of this failure it transcends its subject.

Argo wasn't anything special to me. Sure it was well done and the storyline was fairly interesting but still, shows how pointless Oscar(s) are when movie like Argo gets best picture. But thats just my opinion.
