Dexter does seem to prioritize family more. The question is whether or not it's because he's developing a real attachment to them, or whether he is doing it because everyone keeps telling him how a husband puts family first, and by going off mysteriously he raises too much suspicion.
As for why he kills people instead of getting them arrested, it's purely his need to kill. He needs to kill regularly, and a stream of easy access murderers isn't hard to come by if he doesn't help a few of them evade police every now and then.
If for some prolonged period of time Dexter couldn't kill a murderer, he'd settle for someone less criminal, maybe just someone who is a violent and bad person. If he had access to no bad people at all, he'd probably kill innocent people that wouldn't be missed if they disappeared. His need to kill overrides his selection of victims.

hmm the finale better be amazing. I don't mind this season but it has been the weakest so far. I love the trinity but we are stretching this out imo... I DON'T CARE about angel and laguerta FUCK and deb cries every other episode getting real tired of that too.
Dexter needs a sick fucking bash brawl like he had with the skinner and the female cop.. those were good. Trinity better be epic.. he is after all the greatest serial killer ever.

+ Show Spoiler +okay this episode was good except one glaring break in character on dexter's part which was to rush to the police station from the arcade not expecting to be followed by the trinity killer... I mean wtf? how has he been so careful and so detail-oriented with everything so far and fuck up that bad? It was deb (who is known for being annoyingly emotional) who told him to come too.. What emergency could possibly be so urgent for him that he would just bail on snagging his biggest victim yet and risk blowing his cover?
And as others have said the ending was epic..

This season needs more killing. More of Dexter being Dexter. I still love the season and the show but I really hope that this finale is going to explode and the proverbial shit hits the fan. I heard that the producers originally planned the show to go on for only 5 seasons. I wonder if they're going to stick to that or not.
