If he were a dumb ass, Isaak would have killed him during season 7.
I can't imagine there being a happy ending to this series. At best, Dexter and Harrison leave Miami forever. I still wonder about the wild cards, the US marshall, Elway, and Quinn. Who knows what the hell they're going to do for the remainder of this season.

so you disliked it from the very 1st episode and still watched all seasons?
You must have confused me with someone else. I never said I disliked it from the very 1st episode.

If you considered season 4 of Dexter "down hill" then you have no idea what you're talking about. Along with season 1, it was many of the fans' favorite season, and Trinity was fucking terrifying.

I consider Dexter a dumbass since season 1 and he went increasingly dumber with every season. In season 4 he was dumb enough to get Rita killed. It was one of my favorite seasons too.

Dunno, I think you have to be pretty intelligent to kill over a hundred people without getting caught. Even if some of the kills presented in the TV show might contradict that.

In real life, yes. Not in movie universe.

For a few episodes now, I don't understand how Hannah got out of prison, at the start I assumed she got released, and just changed her ID for her own purposes, but now they a hunting her. So how did she get out of prison in the first place. Did I miss anything?

She broke out, I don't remember exactly how. I think she faked illness and escaped from the hospital they took her to.

Plotmagic.
I agree that Dexter has become more and more careless (=dumb if you're in the business of killing people) and the degree of carelessness should have been his undoing since season 5 at the very least.
I think the show has been hurt by it's own success. The writers had leeway to concoct the story all by themselves since season 3 pretty much, just imagine it ending after season 2. I know this pattern from some japanese animes, where they followed a manga until all the well thought-out story was depleted and due to success of the show they continued and turned it into a lot of rubbish. I don't think Dexter is terrible since I still watch it, but compared to season 1+2 the story is just poor.

The only plot twist I can figure out that makes sense now:
Deb's badge is bugged. Batista has been on to her for quite some time now, and him and Masuka are masterminding a plot involving having Mecha Doakes kill Dex and Deb. Then Harrison Jr. dies, shot in the process, but wait, he's been Harrison Sr. in disguise all along instead. Vogel and that shittyly introduced new guy just fade into oblivion because nobody will remember them past October...
Seriously, though, wasn't it a shocking revelation that the guy we just learned about five seconds ago didn't Actually die? Good thing Dexter had that nice Apple-Sponsored computer to run the ageing software to perfectly match the faces... Bloody rubbish....

The writing this season has really been at its lowest.
"yeah, just write in your diary that you are going to a place you have not been in 40 years, won't be suspicious at all"

She drugged herself in court, was brought to a hospital and escaped from there. I don't remember which episode this was in.

Really? I thought all of seasons 1-4 were great, even the 3rd one. Back then the character subplots in the background weren't devouring the camera time, I mean they were even endearing to a small extent. A common criticism Dexter has always had was that it never really moves forward between each season. Which I thought wasn't completely true, as the show moved forward on a more introspective level in terms of Dexter's development. Which was primarily through Rita, her kids, and eventually Harrison.
Season 4 really left us at the forefront of the show in terms of where it would go. Would Dexter realize he could never fully integrate into society with a family? Can we keep going with the same "big bad" formula season after season after how good the Trinity Killer was? Is Dexter going to become more sloppy after losing Rita? Will Rita's murder lead to Dexter's downfall? What of Harrison's development in the aftermath of it all? What of Astor and Cody? All this potential and more....wasted. They had a real opportunity to break the mold and give us a season or two that's story didn't feel as self-contained to that particular season. An opportunity to move towards a satisfying ending.
You're right in how it's like an anime that's lasted too long now. Just shamelessly dragged out even though the quality is terrible, propelled by the success of past greatness. They were even considering going beyond season 8...
If they just condensed the show down to a 5 or 6 season show it might've still been fine. I mean, season 6 alone felt totally pointless. You have Deb bullshit us by not pulling back the curtain in season 5 then the most pivotal moment in season 6 is simply her finding out what she should have a full 12 episodes ago...terrible.

she had her friend secretly hand her an almost deadly pill and escaped from the icu

Either way, even if their only common element is that they're a show on television, Dexter's writing is complete shit.
I slapped this together to demonstrate:

Seasons 1-4 were the best, everything after has been terrible.
The worst part of it all is that every season had a lot of potential, but they fucked it up so badly. One of the biggest issues with Dexter now is that every season they need to give him a new girlfriend, that and they bring in "friend" characters just for the sake of killing them off for the drama. What are the chances that Vogule lives this season? I am thinking very slim based off previous seasons, and likely with some monologue that Deb is the only person he can trust with his secret, and that she's his only "family".
They utilise the "shock" factor way too much every season past 4, it's a shame that a great show has been butchered by terrible writing,

I don't agree with any of you. I found all seasons fun. Yes dexter has changed from the person he was so many seasons ago but that is as it should be
