How I would rate:
2 > 4 > 1 > 3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 5
5 was absolutely awful. Lumen was annoying. The plot was dull with forgettable villains. The ending was ridiculous (PULL THE FUCKING CURTAIN DEBRA!). The side plot with Deb and the two brothers just kinda fizzled out into nothing. Then there was Liddy, the most interesting part of season 5, who simply ended up being killed by Dexter...-_-.
I knew season 4 would be tough to follow with John Lithgow being one of the best villains ever, and Rita's surprising demise. But even so, nothing was really gained or lost in season 5. Save for Lumen possibly coming back, you could damn near skip the entire thing. That being said, I'm a little worried for season 6 but will definitely watch :/

I agree with everything, but I really think next season will be amazing. I have a feeling that they know season 5 was a bit of a let down, and I fully expect them to return to epicness of seasons 2 and 4.

5 wasn't as good I think we can all agree...but 3 was really good! at least as good as 1 and 4. Miguel got pretty annoying but like it shows a lot of Dexter's character and empathy for someone similar to him.
Also it's interesting to see how he takes on the role of teacher

In my opinion, season 4 was only good because it set up a potential great season 5. Unfortunately, season 5 was the worst one yet by far, not even good television for good chunks or it.
In that case, it also brings down everything that happened in season 4, because good parts of it were tossed under the rug.
For me :
1=2>3>4>>>5
Obviously, the first 2 had a lot more material in them, with learning about Dexter and all the background info. It was a lot more enjoyable than the others for me.

I just watched all 5 seasons for the first time over 4 days. Good stuff :D 1 and 2 are definitely the best... I'd put 4 over 3 and I guess 5 last, although 5 had it's moments for sure by then it started to feel a little too repetitive.

Miguel Prado was just plain awesome
Learning to know Dexter and him being badass and uncaring.
Season 2 was only good because of the constant threat of Dexter being uncovered, this sort of tension doesn't return untill briefly in season 5.
Season 5 was just obvious and tedious at times. But the first 2~3 episodes were gold.

I don't understand why people don't think season one was the best? IMO it was the best season of anything ever made. 2 is the only season that has been close to as good as season one. I still enjoy the rest but it's never been the same as season one and two.

The first and second seasons are clearly win. Everything after that is tripe.

1, 2, and 4 were all very good
3 was bad
5 was extremely bad
The show has twice tried to weave a season out of Dexter finding someone he could truly confide in, and in both seasons I felt it killed the mood of the show. Too me it's kinda unfortunate, I think the premise for season 3 was just bad and thus ended up being bad(a prosecution attorney lead to murder). However I think the premise to season 5 was solid(a horribly damaged girl that was abused lead to murder), just terribly executed and miscast. It doesn't help that season 5 did little to delve into the previous season's shocking end. When you are developing a new character as someone who is gonna be a serial killer, or personally justify murder, they have to be able to it off, Michael C. Hall, John Lithgow, and Christian Camargo all did that well. Jimmy Smits and Julia Stiles both failed very badly at getting me to believe they had it in them to kill and accept a killer.
My trust in this show is completely gone, I will still watch and hope for good things, but season 3 and 5 really tarnished the show to me.

i didnt think 5 was that bad, i really didnt like season 3, 2 and 1 were awesome, 4 was ok 5 wasnt that bad and 3 was horrible, killing doakes was the worst thing they could do, he was so good =( so without doakes around in season 3 and miguel as a really retarded charakter it was just plain bad.

Wow the chick from Save the Last Dance played a serial killer? I've never been particularly interested in this show, but that sounds likely to be worse than all the other seasons.
