I was under the impression all the bijjuu(or their jinchuriki) got at least a little bit of screentime between then and the ultimate showdown arc began, but...now I'm thinking that screentime might've happened in a flashback.

I know the 4 tails is a monkey and has talked directly with Naruto in like the last 100 chapters, but I cannot even remotely remember what animals the 5, 6 and 7 were.
Also I'm a little fuzzy on the order in which events happened and whether or not they were flashbacks at their time.
According to my best knowledge the 3-tails was caught after Gaara was already defeated and I think the same goes for the 2-tails which was beaten shortly before Team Asuma fought Hidan and Kakuzu.

My guess is we can only say which bijuus weren't caught before Gaara.


edit: Tobi only got introduced as Deidara's new partner after Gaara was already beaten and his bijuu extracted. I think Deidara even complained about Tobi being his new partner while they fought the 3-tails.

In retrospect it feels kind of like a waste to have nine bijuu when Kishi only took time to give three of them personalities.
Come to think of it, how were the bijuu distributed? If we have five big countries and nine bijuu, at least one country has to have two. Unless they gave them small villages too, like the hidden rain village.
Where did the bijuu belong to?

A quick google search leads me to believe the following:
The 7 tailed beetle belonged to the village of waterfalls. This village apparently didn't get fleshed out enough to actually be in any known country. The only other people from that village were Kakuzu, a corpse Pain used and one fodder genin during the chunin exam.
Clearly a very powerful village deserving of a bijuu that produced a total of 4 ninja we have encountered in the manga so far.

On a more positive note, according to my search the last jinchuuriki of the 3 tailed tortoise was Rin. Seems like the mist village never retrieved the bijuu after Kakashi killed her.
If you have a really good memory you might think now:
Team Minato didn't fight in a war against the mist village, they fought in a war against the rock village. And thatis true.
Kakashi and Rin traveled back to the leaf village alone, and Rin got captured again, made a jinchuuriki and then saved again by Kakashi before she was died.
Which is amazing because it means that Minato lost 2 of his students in the same mission, both times because he wasn't around. And Rin got captured twice in the same mission.
Simply amazing.

I didn't notice these things the first time reading. While I think these are laughable coincidences, at least I got entertained a little.

Yugito (Cat 2 tails) was captured in the anime in a brief fight scene in a sewer somewhere where she unleashes it after being cornered by I think Kakuzu and Hidan.

3 Tails is the turtle that doesn't have a jinchuuriki who was living under a lake. in the anime they find it as part of some weird side story where kabuto is trying to control this crystal girl or something. Obito arrives at the end after Sakura + seal team fail to hold it and he just takes it.

4 tails was the taller old guy and he got defeated by Kisame in a brief fight in the anime as well.

5 tails is the super tall guy completely covered up. I don't think he ever gets screen time in the anime nor the manga, he just is shown as one of the 7 jinchuuriki or whatever in the war arc.

6 tails was introduced in the anime/(movie?) as well. it's a slug and there's a guy who's like a wandering hermit who wears an open chested robe and blows on a pipe to create bubble jutsu. He isn't captured in the anime portion but he's at least introduced and he helps one of the side characters for a while before he eventually wanders off (to be captured by an unknown akatsuki member)

7 tails is a beetle and also never shown in anime or manga.

8 tails is obviously bee-sama and the oxtopus

9 tails is naruto and demon fox.
