Classic polish stuff tough Pretty sure zulu_nation didn't even blink reading the title and thought "as original as Plato".
Last chapter is something like a nonsense comedy based on slave master dialectic, pretty cool !

that was middle school when I read it lol. But.... at the time, it seemed like some pretty mature concepts. The idea of a guy gaining intelligence, and losing it seemed so sad. And the way it was written, to make you feel what the man was feeling as his intelligence changed, was something I had never seen before.

That's something we all will face, except those who never quite gain intelligence.

I finished reading the 23 volume web novel Mushoku Tensei. It is about a hikkimori (person that never leaves their home) being kicked out and his life after reincarnating in a fantasy world with magic. I quite liked it, some parts much stronger than others but above the average novel released now a days. There were a few places where the author expanded the background/magic system to allow the plot to move forward, not really noticeable when in the middle of it though.

It runs from infant age up until age 74, the picture features part of the early story.

It seems to be currently releasing in normal novel format, hopefully some of the weaker portions are straightened out in this release. There was also some talk about extra content near the end of the web novel run.

Currently reading Battle Station by B. V. Larson. Book 5 in a Sci fi series. The author doesn't live up to the potential of the setting sadly. So doubt I'll finish the series.

Next is Diaspora that was recommended in this thread.

Finished Ferdydurke, and Boulgakov's Life of Molière, sold as a novel over here, and not without reason as it is written as one, and an excellent one too. It was in a volume with his play The Cabal of Hypocrites which is pretty good too. I'll have to dig his writings a bit more, seems like there is more than just The Master and Margarita.
Now Neil Gaiman's American God. I'm realtively pleased so far.

Every time Lem comes up I must recommend 'A perfect vacuum', I think it's his best book.

I am currently reading Mushoku Tensei aswell.
The beginning showed huge promise, and seemed very interesting.
It seems to be dwindling a little now, and many situations seem very cliche/naive.
I'm very much hoping the novel will revert back to how it was at the beginning.

I don't believe you.

I threw up reading this book, my mind is still hurted, my eyes were bleeding one of the worst piece of shit I have ever read by far. A good chunk of the book isn't even propper language, the story is bad, the way it is told is bad one of the worst book I have ever seen (all the light we can not see was just boring, this is trash, this is worse than sniper winning GSL).

I read that book in middle school and thought it was pretty good. Really good actually. Maybe you're just too old for that kind of book.

Maybe it was a gift from my roomate so I had no context, I'm maybe old and weary
Do you remember what you liked about it ?
The secret about Flowers for Algernon is that it's both a terrible and an amazing read.

How is that possible, you may ask?

Because it's an incredible short story, remade into a shitty novel!

The original (short story) is an amazing read, quite poignant really, which you might feel the need to consume in one sitting.

The remake (novel) has added fake controversy, has no soul, and is simply badly written.

To anyone who disliked the book, I suggest you find the short story, read it, weep, and live a better life.

I´m reading American Pastoral at the moment and I´m liking it so far. Should have probably read his novels before reading his biography (Roth Unbound) but it piqued my curiosity to say the least, just finished `The Essential Ginsberg´ as well, could you guys recommend some American poets to read?

Yeah, the novella adds a lot of unnecessary detail and drama as part of a poor attempt at character development, takes away from the core of the story. It really backfires and kind of takes away from how character-driven the original story is.

Ezra Pound and Walt Whitman are to me the pinnacle of American poetry.

Also try Portnoy's Complaint and Sabbath's Theater sometime. Both are outrageously funny.

Robinson Jeffers is probably my favorite American poet, check out "Be Angry at the Sun" for a taste of his most popular work.

Thanks, I've read some Whitman as he gets mentioned a lot by Ginsberg as a major influence on his work. Will read the others soon.

Robert Frost, EE Cummings, Randall Jarrell (I like his Faust but if you can read German, you're probably better off reading Goethe), and Shel Silverstein.

Hey that's right! I actually found it in an English text book (but we never were assigned to read it unfortunately). I don't think I ever read it as novel. I had no idea that was done!

Pound is incredible but I don't know that I'd consider him "American" per se. Some of his short form stuff is exactly what I think poetry should be.

The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough.

Fucking fantastic.

I'm not fond of reading foreign poetry, but I probably need to read some Ezra Pound to add to my "I've read this fascist" list.
