I think the most popular complaint of about A Song of Ice and Fire is that its a little long winded so if you like WoT i'd say you will enjoy it. especially if you are enjoying the show.

I don't have a TV and I don't watch any kind of shows or series at all. Books + Comics + Games consumes as much time as it is

yeah im the same way with no tv, minus the comics and plus watching game competitions, and used to be more so before i watched game of thrones online cause i enjoyed the books so much! strictly comparing it to WoT i'd say it doesn't have the light versus dark themes in as clear of a good vs evil way that WoT does. Also there is more dark adult themes and political intrigue. WoT also has much more/better magic, like one of the best magic systems imo!

Yeah, I'm also watch some E-sports as well (Lets say that it count towards me mentioning games as well).

I think I'll enjoy GoT now that you mentions that kid of stuff. Nice to get some variation, as most of what I've been reading lately in general has been closer to WoT.

Has anyone read The Tale of Genji? If so, you have any idea which of the translations is superior?

I think you'll like GoT. I actually don't think it's at all long-winded stylistically -- if anything, I'd call GRRM's style simplistic and easy to read, and even a little bit immature/clumsy at times -- but it's long-winded in terms of sheer fucking length. (And I do think he could've condensed the plot.) But not hard to read at all.

I couldn't stand WoT myself ... the first book by itself took me 3-4 tries, and I only succeeded on the last try, because I skipped all the prose and just read the dialogue.

GoT is unbearably repetitive and dull if you read them all at once. It's only palatable if you have years in between reading each book.
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

I read the series through FoC all at once and found it completely palatable, but YMMV.

I wouldn't say it becomes repetitive, but when I read them all at once (over the course of two weeks or so) I certainly started just skimming pages after book three. To be honest book four and five barely have any plot.

I haven't read the fifth book yet, but I agree that FoC was ... unnecessary. It's not that it had no plot, it was just that it majorly derailed the main plot of the book with unnecessary subplots. -__-

I found books 1-3 quite focused though.

he ruined it when he split 4 and 5 into different books. Just a cash grab

IMO, he just lost control of his plot. I don't think it's a cash grab, personally. It's really easy for readers to point at a book and say, "Oh yeah, totally unnecessary, clearly he just shit that out for money," when in reality, it's actually kinda excruciating for an author to shit out a book that they know is unnecessary filler. GRRM probably does think books 4-5 are important. I just happen to disagree with him. I think after all these years, he's gotten way too close to his own story and believes that all the details and subplots deserve a place in the final draft when he really should be cutting and condensing instead. But it happens to all authors working on a series...

nah, the old fucker is completely cynical about it, I think. I have it from an insidish source that ever since he became an HBO sensation he's been doing nothing but dabbling in new mexico commercial real estate and going on 'booze cruises'. That dude is set for life, whatever's left of it, he doesn't give a fuck about GOT anymore... I wouldn't...

are you serious? I have trouble imagining GRRM on booze cruises, lol. It would explain his writing speed, though.

I used to be mad about his writing speed but at this point I couldn't care less whether he finishes or not the books. HBO will give us closure and that's enough for me.

new latino posterboy for white intellectuals who claim to be interested in the immigrant experience, or "multiculturalism." Really nothing noteworthy about his prose or dialogue despite the huge circlejerk surrounding him. He's not a pussy though and can bench more than me so there's at least that. Guessing it's gonna soon be required reading for latino lit classes everywhere.

He talks a lot about going to the gym 5 days a week while teaching at MIT and banging 50 women in 6 years while engaged to his fiancee, and getting some gorgeous harvard law morena (that means a latina woman in dominican slang, +1 street cred among upper middle class lit magazine editors for using local slang) pregnant, and he said something about benching 175 when he was younger, which is like my work set but he was also an amateur weightlifter and could run 5 miles, etc so I can't beat that. Not exaggerated in the slightest, the entire book is a memoir like novel about a character very closely based on him about how dominican men like to cheat, americans are racist, and how it sucks to be a first generation immigrant. I can relate to some of his immigrant experiences, which are really not that interesting, and the rest just gets repetitive and boring. He uses a lot of slang and straight up spanish so that makes the prose "authentic" I guess. He's a good writer but the book sucks and I highly doubt he's a great writer.

I can just imagine Harold Bloom in the back of my head saying, this is the kind of shit that sneaks its way to the scholastic canon simply because it's different, not because it's good.
