If this is truly the final season then it means that the animators already created the ending for the show. Isayama's really got to hurry up and end this damn thing before the show does it before him.

As for the timeline, were still about 3 months away from release and 24 episodes is 6 months of runtime. Supposedly it will also have a 6+ month long gap in the middle like s3. So the latter episodes are at least a year away. If the manga finishes this volume, so within 4 months, that still leaves them with like 6-9 months until the last few episodes. So i think they are good on time and will wait for the manga ending before adapting.

+ Show Spoiler + Maybe they'll fail and all get impaled on the funding titan's back, Armin included, and humanity is done for!

+ Show Spoiler + Humanity is mostly wiped out anyways. Not sure if Eren is beaten or will make a surprise comeback or if Ymir will directly become a boss à là Kaguya in Naruto, but we're probably within the last 5-10 chapters. We'll definitely get some kind of interaction with Eren, just killing him off here without anything would feel weird.

+ Show Spoiler + Was it really necessary to turn Eren into a simp in the last chapter? And why the hell is Levi in a wheelchair if he can walk? Don't even try to tell me he can't, he's clearly crossing his legs so his lower body and spine both work just fine.

Am I missing something or is the Ymir thing out of nowhere? How and when did Mikasa kill Ymir exactly? Other than that slight redemption for Eren, which was somewhat foreseeable but the way it was revealed was decently executed imo. Not that you can really be redeemed for the amount of bloodshed Eren caused and I feel that his motivation basically came down to "I'm insane". I assume that Levi is taking it slow for the first time in his life. He also doesn't need to be paraplegic for his legs to be unable to carry his weight, he got blown up after all, there could simply be a lot of damage to his muscles, tendons and bones.

No, it was the result of him watching too many marvel movies: Recently, fans were teased by this surprising tie-in when Hajime Isayama spoke with Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. In its latest issue, the artist behind Attack on Titan opened up about his ideal ending for the series, and he said it’ll remind some of Marvel’s sci-fi comedy. “At first I explored emulating The Mist, but now you could say that I’m moving in a more peaceful direction, similar to Guardians of the Galaxy,” Isayama said as he explained where he hopes to take Attack on Titan. (via Fuku Shuu) “I’m not talking about whether Shingeki no Kyojin [Attack on Titan] will have a good or bad ending - I only speak of my own attitude as the creator, as well as differences in my methods of ensuring that the readers enjoy the series.” Source It's an unfortunate fact that mangaka change over time and evolve their series accordingly. We've seen it with Miura when he turned Berserk into a shonen and we've seen it with Togashi when he stopped caring about HxH. Isayama lost his edge in the middle of writing SnK. Maybe it's because he aged or became rich? Not sure if we'll ever know the exact reason, but the ending we got was definitely different from what was originally intended.

However, it feels like the author veered off his original intent a bit. The whole series for a long time felt like a coherent vision with an ending in mind. Taking into account the title of the first chapter, it feels like something is still missing. Possible alternatives: - Making it all a dream would have been unsatisfying. - Seeing all the events of the series as a possible future and then jumping back in time to an earlier decision by Eren or Ymir and stopping it all, maybe could work, but then the whole series is "something that didn't happen". That has been very poorly received in other series, but maybe could work here. - Killing (almost) everyone may have been the most appropriate ending, but would that have been satisfying? Would anything have been solved? Perhaps all the people of Paradis should have died in the end, melancholic ending where they were trapped and finally discover their power to break free, only to be annihilated. Might strangely have been the most satisfying ending. Is the actual ending unsatisfying because so many main characters survived? Unsatisfying because War is still on the horizon? I feel like we go back to my first point, the author would have to solve War for humanity. I didn't hate the ending, but I certainly didn't love it.

alternatively i would be also ok with an ending which is basically the centipede thing actually wins, everyone dies and history repeats itself. kinda like the matrix being in a loop theres probably some other ending that would have been satisfying also as i dont particularly have a creative mind and dont know what would have been a good ending myself, but this one left a pretty bad taste in my mouth

Honestly I'm fine with the fact that Eren's great feat is that he eradicates the titans, that was the part of the ending I thought was a good idea and tied back to the original story. The problem is a bit that the last few hundred chapters widened the scope and while discrimination and war might be related to the titans, it's not believable that these will just stop. That the manga even says that makes it imo even worse. And honestly I have no idea how the centipede thing even died, it existed on it's own before. The whole thing with Ymir is way too nebulous and that's supposed to be the satisfying part of the ending. The resolution of the Eren-Miksasa-Armin conflict was imo fine, but Eren's motivation was contradictory and very weak. It felt like the author was juggling too many ideas at once and didn't really pull through with any of them. This would have been so much better if Ymir became a real character 200 chapters before, the parasite got a bit of hard magic rules and Eren used those rules to kill and free Ymir. But atm it's very confusing for me how the genocide and Ymir's death are really related outside of the fact that it drove Mikasa to killing Eren which is supposedly key. Isayama could have f.e. tied this back to the Ackerman clan, but the way it's now it just feels like something is missing. The ending left way too many questions open imo and a lot of stuff just happens without me being able to comprehend why. Maybe I need to reread some stuff or read a bit between the lines, but a lot of this is pretty wonky. I also didn't really get the Berthold stuff, nor why this was important enough to happen in the last chapter over a deeper exploration of Eren's motivation. Overall it's not the worst one I've ever seen, but still meh. Might have to watch GotG now to see what he had in mind.
