It seems pretty obvious that the design of the new lightsaber is based more on western swords than eastern (thinner and longer blade). Particularly a Claymore.

I don't understand why people are so against the blade. It is significantly more practical than ANY of the other lightsabers shown in the series. You can argue that it doesn't look cool, but it is def more useful (length + guard) and, imo, would look more intimidating than a normal lightsaber. Assuming that guy is a sith it makes sense if only for that. If he's one of the last sith alive then it makes even more sense to make a practical lightsaber.

As for the problem of it being dangerous to the user, that depends on how you use it. Since it's not a circular guard it will only hit you if you hold it at the wrong angle. Assuming the user has a grip that forces the proper angle + significant skill (which he obviously will), then it could be used "safely."

One other theory I've read is that it is "exhaust" for the blade. Dunno about that.

The hilt is mad retarded since it's not even made of w/e the lightsaber blade is made of, but of metal. We already saw lightsabers cutting through metals no problem. Wtf is this hill protecting? Not against other lightsabers, so just random people with regular melee weapons?

The assumption is the blade is under the metal and the metal is simply there to protect the users hands + aesthetics. I highly doubt there are two smaller crystals in those side spots. More likely there is simply a big one in the hilt that is redirected outward. Cutting the metal would simply run into the blade.

Quick technical point about lightsaber blades: they are "sticky." Well, "coarse" anyway. You can't slide a saber along another's length very easily, if at all, as is very clear in the original triology fights. (Prequel fights got around the friction by disengaging blades very quickly most of the time).

This is the reason why normal lightsabers don't have guards; they will usually be able to engage with a blow to the hand and stop it. Of course, the hand is still fairly vulnerable, as we saw in four of the seven cinematic saber fights so far. So a guard is not entirely a bad idea, despite the inflexibility it would enforce. And while it would certainly by better to not have any exposed metal, if technical reason prevented simply splitting the beam into three, it wouldn't be a huge problem due to the stickiness: an attack would have a hard time hitting the weak spot without being caught either by the blade or the guard, and stopped in its tracks.

Also, if the guard is "bladed" as we imagine from the mechanism, it would have substantial applications in close combat. (miss an attack, still hit with the guard)

At least it isn't a "lightwhip" of which far too much was seen in the books.

Ok so you block with the hilt, then it's gone now. Now you either have no hilt, or that the energy part of the hilt remains and you're actually in greater danger than before.

I think it would make sense for the Sith to have these goofy lightsaber designs. They seem willing to sacrifice and risk a lot to get every extra bit of advantage.

If you hold that thing two handed, you would be pretty hard press to hit yourself with the hilt. And I think using a light saber in general is super dangerous, the flavor the of the danger doesn't really matter.

I'm more uncertain now.

The first part of the trailer had a fan-made quality to it- I can't quite put my finger on it why. The close shot of the storm trooper and the soccer ball droid.

I like the latter half of the trailer, but don't understand the broad sword light saber on multiple levels.
1) The place you are going to catch a blade is where the hilt and the blade meet... which presumably is exactly where there is no blade and therefore would just cut through. That is unless the blade itself sprouts little light blades at its base rather than two separate blades coming from the handle. ...and from the picture the there is a big metal part for a lightsaber to cut through. Functionally it doesn't make sense- it can't do the one thing a hilt ought to do, except for very specific hits.
2) A sword with a normal hilt generally is not two sharp blades that can pierce you if your sword is knocked back (or cut off your leg if you pull your sword past your leg on a bad angle.) Hilts are dull, whereas lightsabers cut through anything. Lightsaber hilts would be more a hazard to the wielder than to the opponent.
3) If they are going for Rule of Cool... I don't think it looks cool. Normal light sabers look cool. A double bladed light saber looks cool. (Honestly one of the best ideas in Episode I.) A light saber hilt looks silly.

Like many, I was in the "I dunno, could be good, could be bad" camp. I'm still crossing my fingers, but I think I'm adjusting expectations a little from 50-50 to 49-51 likelihood of it being good or bad.

I am super hyped now, not that my hype level was low before, but damn, that teaser got things rolling in my feelings. :D

About the sword: Might be an older lightsaber or one that just isn't made very well. The blade looked not like the normal lightsaber blades either, so it might be that this Sith or dark side user, or whoever he is, either found some old saber or constructed one with the few ressources he had aviable.
For all we know without the Expanded Universe Palpatine and Vader were the last "real" Sith and this guy might very well be an "amateur" without the knowledge to build a perfect lightsaber.
I don't mind the style though, it's not as silly as the thing in this new animated series.

Also, what is going on with the light saber blade, that thing is pissed.

I am sure we will get a good reason behind that shit in the movie. It could be that the hilt is made of some light saber resistant metal or some dumb shit. Or you can just assume that whoever made it knew what they were doing.

I mean, we are talking about a world with space wizards who sword fight and where there is an entire race of fur people whos language is grunts and growls. I am willing to accept light sabers with hilts.

Well that's a rather low bar, no? I haven't bothered my head about any of the animated series as they struck me as quite silly and therefore not worth watching.

Like some have mentioned, that saber guard looks like it will severely limit the amount of movement you can do with the saber...I'm sure siths are skilled enough that they'll deal with it easily, but it's still functionally poor. It does serve as a way to protect the user from the other saber user sliding his blade down in an attempt to cut his hand off like we've seen in some of the fights throughout star wars movies.

I found the later seasons of The Clone Wars quite good actually, but I won't watch this Rebels series, that one seems way too silly to even bother. Let's just say that I am very happy they don't seem to go that route with the movie.

It was a cool teaser. It definitely gave me goosebumps. For anyone that is worried about the quality needs to check out JJ Abrams' other films. It is common for a teaser, especially, that some of the effects aren't even done yet.

I'm completely on the same page as you. I didn't know how to feel about John Boyega and Daisy Ridley; they both look out of place. Maybe because of the film quality, as opposed to the older films, where everyone looked more natural.
