I'm actually hoping for it to be New Jedi Order stuff focused around the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

I don't understand the Jar Jar Binks hate, he was my favorite character

He didn't bother me the first time watching. And then I hated him. And then I didn't care. But the last viewing, I think why he's so bad is he's completely un-necessary. He doesn't do anything. The only thing he contributes is getting them to the underwater city (which could've been circumvented if the Trade Federation were smart and didn't land on the opposite side of the planet to the capital they wanted to conquer (and then instead spend some time filming the futile resistance against the invasion force.) And then he conjures up the Gungam army. And that's it. Beyond that he's there to mug for the camera.

For storytelling purposes, there are far more elegant solutions to both of those two roles he fulfilled. Part of the problem with the big pay off is it's so un-focused. Too many battles. Cut the Gungan battle and suddenly you have more time for the dog fight, the Queen's commandos, (and maybe show more of the outside battle with the security forces.) Lightsaber fight is already awesome.

In addition, movies are already short, so you take out Jar Jar, you have more screen time for everyone else.

edit.
Haha. That's a quick conversion.

Honestly, I thought the Gungan battle had some of the best art direction in any of the movies; the shiny metallic siege engines and the strange charged blue spheres seemed pretty awesome when I first saw the movie, and I still like 'em. I'm not sure about the justification behind the Gungans having anti-robot siege tech, but I digress.

Well same thing with the Gungan city, but it doesn't make sense to be on the opposite side of the planet to your target. Visually there are some very spectacular stuff. And I seem to recall Lucas is a very visual director (as far as planning story lines). I strongly suspect he had these very distinct scenes in his head (underwater city, water caves, setpiece droid battle.) But it's a much too cluttered an ending.

Even the Endor battle is really pushing things and the Episode I has one more battle subplot than the Endor battle did. There's just not enough screen time to do all the battles justice. So the light saber fight is super epic, the dogfight is kinda lame because they didn't cast Anakin as a teen or late teen (which could've jumped started the love story right away) and the commando team get's the short shift, but is intense enough (really only see the Queen although there's also the decoy and the security team outside running around). And then there's the comic relief battle. Jar Jar. Kills a lot of tension in the final climax imo. But it's very pretty.

Disney has produced some reputable films and they have a lot of resources. I am not expecting something along the lines of Avatar or LOTRs, but I am hopeful it will be something worth watching.

No one has answered this question yet?

There was a rerelease in 1997 of the original trilogy for the 20 year anniversary that retouched and restored most of the films' scenes, and even added a few that were cut from the original (I believe the Han and Jabba scene on Tatooine wasn't in the first 1977 release). That's actually the version that most people have seen, not everyone has seen the original one from 77.

The 77 version is the superior one. Too bad my VHS are in a terrible shape
And by the way the director's cut is not always the best version.

Well, I think Lucas is a terrible director. Good visionary, but terrible director. That's part of the reason why the best star wars move is the one he didn't direct(episode 5). I'm kind of ambivalent as to which version of the original trilogy is better. I don't think the remastered version did anything which horribly screwed up the films. It's still basically the same movie, just touched up. And those things they did touch up still hold up as looking quite nice, like the cgi x-wings taking off from the rebel base instead of just points of light flying into the sky from the horizon. Both versions are pretty much equally good to me though.

I'm optimistic about this new movie, especially since disney will probably try to do a good job, at least with the first sw movie they get to do, and get a good director for it.

The director's cut isn't always the director's cut either. Can't remember who it was (probably Ridley Scott) who was getting pressured to do a director's cut for DVD sales, whereas in his mind, the director's cut was the one that was shown in the theatres.

I would kinda kill for more pretty space battles ala episode 3. Not sure if that's great movie material but I would love to have some of the images in my head from the x-wing books put on the screen.

A lot of people have been saying things like "they'll just run it into the ground" so I copy/pasted my response from a Star Wars site:

This is the thing. Hasn't the franchise been all but run into the ground as it is? The legacy series of books were nowhere near as good as the earlier books, the videogames are getting worse and worse...

This could be a blessing in disguise. While Disney aren't exactly renowned for making this "type" of film, they won't want to anger the legions of fanboys (us) and as such I expect them to put significant effort into getting a top notch crew and cast for these films, if they happen, since I doubt the old cast will be up for it.

It depends now on what they're actually going to be about. If it's going to be something existing in canon - the Yuuzhan Vong War, for example - or something brand new that they throw our heroes into.

I'm not sure how good either of those would be. I think they have better options - a Darth Bane triology, a KOTOR trilogy...

Disney churns out loads of films a year, so there's no reason why even more spin off type productions aren't possible.

we've rebooted a bunch of stuff, why not starwars.

hopefully they get it right, otherwise people are going to look at this as george lucas selling the hollow remains of his soul.

He'd have to get back into shape, but yeah, they could!

Yuuzhan Vong series might be too long for three films though, it's 19 novels....

Given how the american public has reduced its standards to the point where people will pay money for mindless, plotless, character-less, nothing-but-shiny-graphics-and-explosions, I wouldn't be surprised if they totally destroy the new series. People don't demand good movies anymore so producers and writers will just follow the crowd.

rofl. 7th, 8th and 9th movies on the way. As if Star Wars hasn't suffered enough. Let it go man. You don't need to run a franchise into the ground then do immoral acts to the corpse.

Let it go.
