Poor quality bait.

So anyway about my prediction from Dec 9. (spoliers)

It would be extremely lazy writing, and would put the movie 'worst than phantom menace' tier

Edit: don't know how they could make his death not cheesy

So now the movie is "worse than phantom menace tier?"
I didn't watch the movie yet, but from the leaks and people talking about the movie it seems like a great moment (as in like emotional) and one that makes sense overall

It's a weird mix of the original trilogy and the prequels, for me there were a bit too many "non-sensical" humour scenes, like I would not expect them to happen the way it was shown. But it's just not my kind of humour I guess and they were most likely put in to counter the overall "darker" movie so I know where they were coming from with this but I disagree.

very very very small / almost non spoiler in the quote, BEWARE !

+ Show Spoiler +
There is a small astrodroid you have seen in the trailer, the round one. He has a screen presence that felt like 30 minutes total. When one of the main characters puts his thumb up, he puts up his lighter/torch as well to resemble a thumbs up. Why would an astrodroid do that ... and there are many more examples of the same. For me the droid is the new jar jar

But I actually liked the rest. So it's not a bad movie, definitely has good scenes as well !

ANOTHER SPOILER, ONLY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN IT

It is really annoying that they blew up a 3rd deathstar/planet. I feel like they went back and said "what did people like about 4 and 5 and 6 ? Oh ! The deathstars obviously. Lets put it back in . No ... the 2nd one was already bullshit in my opinion

It is a good movie but it could have been so much more. They played it way too safe script wise...

I have 2 big Problems with the movie: MAJOR SPOILERS

1. + Show Spoiler +
80% of the scenes I got a major deja vu especially in the second part of the movie:

little droid with vital info on a desert planet - seen it before
escape said planet with falcon - seen it before
hey lets use a mega sized holo to communicate with my evil master - seen it before
evil guys test superweapon - seen it before
good guys learns about superweapon while evil guys come in for the kill - seen it before
good guys plan attack via holo tank - seen it before
find weak spot in overpowered superweapon - seen it before
send in small force to destroy shield gen protecting said weak spot - seen it before
high fiving all around while preping X-wings; eager to fight - seen it before
X-wings make first attack run uncontested, no damage - seen it before
get swarmed by Ties, looks grim - seen it before
commandos plant explosives and give X-Wing last chance - seen it before
good guy meet bad guy over a bottomless abyss - seen it before
good guys friend can only watch what will happen NOOOEZ - seen it before
lets fly into this thing and blow it up from the inside - seen it before
use force to grab a lightsaber stuck in snow - seen it before (wtf)
fly away while superweapon explodes - seen it before
go find exiled good guy master, find old wreckage of master - seen it before
etc etc.

killing Han Solo is the only risk the took storywise in the whole movie, to me it was clear he would die the moment he said chewie likes her blabla fly falcon, i guess Ford wasn't exactly eager to continue in the next film...

2. + Show Spoiler +
Kylo Ren is the worst villain in Star Wars history. Basically a whiny little bitch. Even when he trashes a room with his lightsaber I could only think of a frustrated 14 year old spoiled kid.

Darth Maul - badass killer
Anakin - agony into fury masskiller
Darth Vader - evil incarnate
Emperor - evil master mind/sadist
Kylo Ren - ???

It was ok until the point he took his mask of the first time - stoping the laser blast and killing innocents in the beginning, but it went downhill fast and deep.

I would still rate it 8/10 but i expect more from a star wars movie.
visuals and sounds are great and it has the right amount of jokes (the droid giving the finger is my favourite scene in a movie in the last 3 years) and it has a few scenes that will send chills down your spine.

We 100% agree on 1, while on 2...

Your description of him was correct but for me the character felt right, it was like nobody ever properly trained him after Luke and he was stuck in that development phase when he rebelled against him.

We absolutely disagree on the last part ... :D

I pretty much only have heard positive things about Kylo Ren thus far. Apparently he plays it very well and the "whiny bitch" part was thus far described as having some depth. Hmmm

An 8/10? So the best Star Wars movie ever? Seems great

I don't think its the fault of the actor but the script. For me he comes not evil enough more like confused/frustrated. But Star Wars without a true epic villain... just doesn't feel right for me.

I would rate Episodes 4 and 6 a 9/10, Episode 3 and this a 8/10.

I don't see the movie until midnight, but the idea of it copying a lot of imagery/ideas from the original doesn't bother me in all. Given the prequels, I think Disney HAD to take the safe route and HAD to capture the originals feel to get fans to trust them going forward.

From now on I expect a lot more risks and original design in Star Wars. This movie needed to tie to the originals closely though.

Sorry to disappoint your elitist tastes about movies. Not everyone is a fucking artist that need some... I don't even know what you need. Everyone spitting on the PT are like old people, "t'was better in the good ol'days"...

I actually liked PT. It was not the best movies I ever saw, but it was far from the worst.
I can be nitpicking on some subjects, but cinema is not really something I watch to get some profound thinking... Especially american's blockbusters. Just pick a book if you want to do that.

Interestingly, rather than the old people... I find my students (junior high and high school) to be faaaar more dismissive of the prequels than I am. I often think about the failed story telling and why elements don't work, but I was actually taken aback at an entire class's open vehemence, if not outright hostility, towards the films.

It is often a sort of "monkey see monkey do" phenomenon. A generation that grew up with online video reviews often just parrots the words of the reviewers and adopts the reviewers' criticisms as their own. For all the things that there is to dislike about the prequels, I tend to hear the same trivialities mentioned by 1-2 famous prequel reviews that get repeated, over and over again, as if that's what really matters.

I mean the same can be said of the generation that uncritically lapped up the prequels as cool SW action movies, no? That automatically enjoy a movie when it's expensive? It's not a case of, for example, when people reject Star Trek films, they don't do it ultimately for reasons like "how come at warp 7 it only took 10 minutes to go from here to there when it's supposed to be 300 lightyears" or "how come they could use the transporter with the shields up," right? What minutiae do you see people obsess over about the SW prequel trilogy? I think those reviews resonate with people for a reason.

The prequels were not awful. They simply didn't age well and they didn't live up to the standards of their predecessors, but in and of themselves they did provide a lot of what made SW good in the first place. Especially for those that never saw the originals, most of the inadequacies of the prequels seemed irrelevant because they had no frame of reference. I actually saw the prequels first, though after watching the originals it was instantaneously clear how woefully inadequate they were in comparison (but they were still fun at the time).

What trivialities am I talking about? Midichlorians, some Jar Jar lines, using Force powers that didn't exist in the OT, Yoda having a lightsaber, R2-D2 having new attacks, minor continuity flaws. Some of these were bad but minor (would it really have been so game-changing if Qui-Gon said "the Force is strong with this one" instead of "his power level is over 9000" ?), and yoda having a lightsaber made sense but didn't conform to some ideas of what he should be like (and said critics should just get over it).

Why not focus on the real, macroscopic issues that murdered the prequels? How about how bad both Anakins were as characters, the cringeworthy dialogue, the podracing and Ep 1 space battle scenes which were both boring and unfeasible yet central to the plot (there is a limit to suspension of disbelief even in science fantasy)? How about the fact that while OT space battles told a story, they were merely background graphics in the PT? These are critical issues that actually made the movies worse, while the reasons in the preceding paragraph are the ones that actually come up when people criticize the prequels in an unintelligent and generally more hostile (as opposed to disappointed) manner.

Here is a good example of the wrong way to go about criticizing a movie, that sees the most light in the online reviews world:
