I wouldn't take them to heart. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that a movie is better than the book xD

I wouldn't go watch any movie if you worry too much about 15-20 euros. I'd crawl up and live off of bread and water for the rest of my miserable life, not having to deal with an event that may or may not disappoint.

Well, the book is pretty damn good too, but yeah maybe the movie is slightly better.

My stance on these kind of things is just go in with really low expectations, so you might get positively surprised. Just don't expect everything to be exactly like it was in your imagination, since I can guarantee it will never be.

Saying one thing is better than is other is bullshit anyway. I mean some are not passionate readers(maybe they don't like Tolkien's style) and still enjoy the movie while others have a specific expectation of how everything should look and are naturally let down by a movie adaptation.
Just watch it and try to enjoy the film, if you like it, great, if you don't you still can enjoy the books.

Read the book, was a bit peeved but shrugged off some of the condensations they HAD to do to make the whole backstory understandable to readers (e.g. combining Bolg and Azog into one character, using A FUCKING MORGUL BLADE to show Sauron's return, not making Mirkwood ALREADY corrupted), but on the other hand, the story made more sense in one important point, the time when Bilbo was separated from the Dwarves versus what was explained in the book.

I'll have to see the next movie to REALLY see how much of a dramatic turn things would take, and I'm awaiting how much of an impact Galadriel's statement would have, since it was foreboding as fuck and wasn't really explained.

Yep, I also feel that I can't quite rate the film without at least having seen the desolation of Smaug. It's basically just a really long introduction.

I annoyed myself for three hours straight during this movie. Absolutely terrible and not a single good word to say about it. Radaghast was just the final nail in the coffin. The Hobbit is one of my favourite books of all time and it PJ raped, tortured, quartered, burned and buried it.

Seeing where it comes from and what story it is based upon it is without a doubt the worst movie I've seen in cinema in the last 3 years at the very least.

Fight Club is. But besides from that, no.

there are hundreds of films better than the original novel. the shining / the graduate / fight club / finchers girl with the dragon tatoo / dr strangelove / the godfather / the lord of the rings / jurassic park / children of men / those are just the popular ones and blockbusters... books generally are better simply because you use your own imagination. in regards to this... even if the hobbit is the worst of the 3 lotr it would still be better than the novel. as incredible as they were at the time, they have wayyyy to much detail in them and important parts of the books are summarized in like 2 paragraphs.

Thats just really opinion-based. Unless the movie is a runaway success that is >>>>>> than the book, you really can't say one is better than the other.

I have to agree a little bit, this was just the average mainstream storyline movie which was cheesy as fuck and no interesting characters at all (Bilbo being shocked at everything etc), it felt like this movie was made for small kids who doesn't understand that these characters is the most stereotypical people ever and every comment in the movie was insanely predictable.

It was cool though, just cannot believe they took the LOTR trilogy and made a movie like this around them, LOTR was a little bit cheesy but super well done and more of a "special" movie while not being this cheap thing the hobbit was

I hope my post makes sense

Hahahaha. It IS made for kids , JUST LIKE THE BOOK. And the characters are stereotypical because these characters invented the particular stereotype LOL.

Well, that is precisly the difference between The Hobbit and LOTR both in the books and in the movies. It was intended as a children's book admittedly a dark one at that.

Just watched it and I must say it was a very good experience. The only things that really bothered me was the Azog plot which I found a bit cheesy. Also, being a Tolkien fan, I didn't really liked how Peter Jackson didn't mention any of the elves/dwarves wars, and presented the origin of the animosity between elves and dwarves just simply as a moment where elves didn't helped the dwarves and dwarves weren't happy about it.
Other than that, I think P. J. did an amazing job and even put things that appeared in the book that I didn't expected to appear in the movie. Well with 3 movies, each of them lasting 3 hours I guess he had to fill in things :D.
