Also, AJ + her sister are way cute.
And I am NEVER going to finish this episode, gah

No, this is not a joke/trolling thread. We don't need more filler posts asking if it is. Remember to spoiler season 6 content, and clearly label your spoilers.

The way I see it, is the marks are very general. So it can apply to a lot of things. If you are good at poker, and switch do Starcraft, I bet your mark would have something to do with being competitive.

But this could be a good idea for one of the season 2 episodes: “pony who changed its own destination (therefore its own cutie mark)”.

finding gems, with that you'd expect her to be a miner or something involving geology, yet her cutie mark doesn't constrain her life.

+ Show Spoiler + It's cliche. Again. But... That has got to be the best rendition of the Tortoise and the Hare that I have ever seen or read. So they are more than excused. Also, the first competition between AJ and Rainbow Dash raises some interesting questions. What exactly makes an athlete an athlete? Is it purely mechanical ability, or something more? Rainbow Dash cheated by utilizing an advantage unavailable to AJ, however... there point in competing was to discover the better athlete, and what if her having wings just makes her a better athlete? Is a bicyclist who has had his left arm severed in a horrible accident, and is thus less able to balance the bike he rides (I actually know nothing about bicycling so maybe this is a completely stupid and incorrect metaphor, so my apologies), any less of an athlete? I could see the answer being both yes and no. If he overcomes the difficulty maybe he's even more of an athlete. Back to the episode: This is the first time I've ever actually enjoyed Spike's character, because his natural proclivity towards commentary was a funny/cool characteristic. Also, Pinkie's "Oh yeah she di-id!" was cute. And lastly... I think I've hit that point where the episodes are enjoyable and I'm not thinking too much about it.* (A similar sort of thing happened with Big Bang actually... I might write a post later comparing various TV shows) *well I'm obviously doing some fair share of thinking. But you know what I mean

But you know what I mean Well I don't think the wings make her a better athlete, it's just a ridiculously unfair advantage that goes around the rules of all the events. It's not pure physical ability that lets her win (for example, a faster runner is a better athlete than someone who uses a car to finish a race in first place). So AJ wanted to even it up and see who was actually more physically capable (better athlete).

However when I reluctantly gave the show a chance my opinion about my little pony completely changed. The show has this magical element that make each story line heartfelt and heartwarming. I just blew threw the entire first season in a day and I can't until the second season starts!!!

+ Show Spoiler + YES! Finally. This is the first episode to actually take me off guard. To surprise me. Rarity's job, her love, her devotion - half her character - is to fashion these dresses. And she is met with UNANIMOUS disapproval. It's safe to say I was not expecting that at all. The show does a great job showing the pains of "The customer is always right," something I've never had to experience in my own life. By the way, Rainbow Dash is awesome. "It just... needs to be cooler. About 20% cooler." I'm wondering about her voice actress. I googled her but I didn't recognize anything she's been in, and yet I get this impression every now and then that I know her voice from somewhere. =/ Back to the plot: As soon as Rarity gets the dresses just right - in her own eyes hideous - she learns that her work will be on display - as she had originally hoped for - and her business will either escalate or take a dive. Fun fun. Although it's kind of ridiculous that you would set up a fashion show and then not show off the fashion you planned to. It'd be like the RHCP setting up tours at stages around the world... before recording the album. For all they know, the lead guitarist John Frusciante might leave the band! (lol... I need to work on my metaphors) But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to advance the plot. Then, with a final stroke they tie in the eternal fact of life that no good deed goes unpunished. Probably not my favorite episode, but definitely well crafted. Also... ... ...Fluttershy had my favorite dress of the bunch. Yeah. I now have a favorite pony dress.

So AJ wanted to even it up and see who was actually more physically capable (better athlete). I don't think so. The fact that Applejack spends all her time on the ground makes her body naturally stronger, while Rainbow's needs to be light so her wings can still carry her at top speed. I think it balances out pretty well. It's pretty dumb that they had a long jump competition though. Flying for pegasi is natural, but its not like its completely effortless. The car analogy is a bit off. I think it's more of a swimming vs running comparison

General life tip: You can't. Episode 15 + Show Spoiler + Um. What? Just... what? I appreciate the looney toons references. I'm also wondering why the Hydra's animation seemed so weird. It wasn't poorly animated... it just seemed out of place, which makes me think it's a reference of some sort as well. As for the episode as a whole, however, I'm... I'm... uh. Just. What?

Also, I agree with you, I think episode 15 was the worst episode in the season, apparently it was supposed to have a different message (keep an open mind) but it got changed during production.

Yes, and no. =/ Interesting about the production change. It... just felt sort of creepy. At first it was cool, I was thinking, "Oh hey, she's got precog, nice." There will always be this milieu of mystique around the things she does, even little things - like in the very next episode, she happens to have seen just the book Twilight needed to see. However.. the full body twitching... imagine if it was a human doing that. With that frequency. In a live action show. I think maybe we're programmed to be creeped out by epileptic attacks, and that could explain it. Regardless, definitely not one of the better episodes just because Twilight got to be a bit annoying.

+ Show Spoiler + Creepy vibe on a roll? Only god knows why, but Rarity after she put on make-up reminded me of South Park. No, nothing specific from South Park. Just South Park in general. Like I said... god knows why. Overall I was underwhelmed with episode. You'd think the fantasy staple "City in the sky" + the Icarus myth would make for a good episode... but it was missing something for me. For the sake of deliberate redundancy, god knows why. Weird that they'd have Icarus fall, but then not have Daedalus show any regret. Heh.

First a manticore; now a cockatrice? They know their fantasy. Though they could've been a bit more creative than a chicken-snake. + Show Spoiler + ![]()
