No, this is not a joke/trolling thread. We don't need more filler posts asking if it is.

Fluttershy is still best pony. I don't like Rarity as a character as I feel a lot of her personality is contrived and based out of necessity to speak to young girls (a role which I don't think she always fulfills), but as an adult her bad qualities are really funny to me and I appreciate her as comic relief. I feel the same way with Spike, though Rarity has a larger role and is thus more comedically, and often morally, relevant.
yeah i can understand where you're coming from. for me anyway rarity is especially interesting. she has her character defects, but when it comes to bigger issues she always comes through in the end. so i think no matter what kind of personal flaws you might have, it makes it possible for anyone to identify with her.
you could say that last part about any of the ponies, but talking to others about this show, what i've noticed about rarity in particular, is she seems to be the easiest to dislike initially--and this dislike seems to be visceral, almost arising out of prejudice. my theory is it's because her characteristics evoke all the common cultural tropes--descriptors like superficial, haughty, and extravagant, come to mind--which are characteristics associated with a myriad of shallow and superficial personality types. it's easy to laugh at that/her, and indeed, the show finds many an occasion to joke at her expense to great effect. but i think rarity has the last laugh in that regard, as she trots against the quick judgments that people make of her and defies their expectations. beneath her most salient characteristics lies a genuine set of qualities that always comes through in the end. while she might be overly concerned with the petty most of the time, whenever a big issue comes up, whenever a pony (or even mushtacioed dragon) needs a hoof, she becomes selfless and self-sacrificing and puts the other's needs ahead of her own (such as in Sisterhooves Social she dives in the icky mud to win back the heart of her sister sweetie belle).
precisely because she's so apparently flawed and arguably easiest to dislike initially, that i think she can be one of most endearing characters, and a good one to identify with. we've all been given the short-hoof on account of some superficial characteristic about ourselves that others have used to come to unjustified conclusions about us. it's because rarity's flaws are so obvious and petty that i think she's so interesting as a character. i think most people dislike superficiality, and it's easy to dismiss those that are superficial, but even those that seem superficial aren't necessarily superficial, and i think rarity teaches us that. she seems superficial--and i think this is obvious--and the temptation is to settle on that, and regard her as superficial--and often we do, because the culture has made it clear that when someone is depicted as a mellow-dramatic fashionista she is probably pretty shallow. that the show makes it so obvious, almost gives us permission to immediately slot her into that category. but of course we learn that we can't exactly slot rarity into that category, not in the end, and i think this leads us to question the "reliable" markers we sometimes use to evaluate others.
moreover, those that seem superficial may indeed be superficial, but there's still an opportunity for them to redeem their apparent flaws through acts of kindness (or generosity if you'd rather), especially when those kindnesses really matter. if rarity wasn't given the chance, she would never have won back her sister, but she was given a chance, with the help of her friend applejack (who interestingly enough is the one pony of the five she most clashes with), and thus she redeems herself. similarity, many people are flawed and they can't help being that way, but many of those people at least recognize their flaws and try to be better. at least in rarity's case, i think she succeeds in the end.

I really didn't like Rarity when I started watching MLP; I thought she was just a bitch. She remained one of my least favourite until Sisterhooves, one of my favourite episodes. Since then, I've really grown attached to the character. Regarding the comic relief comment, there is an incredibly simple explanation for it. One of the first things I learned in script writing classes was one sure-fire way to write comedy is to use "the odd couple." The thing about ponies is, the mane 6 are such an incredibly diverse group, that no matter the situation, there will be a way they will naturally "foil" one another, which is one reason why the show is so funny.

Really enjoyed the new ep.

Season 4 continues to impress.

Yup.
+ Show Spoiler + Of all of the character development episodes (including the cutie mark crusaders) this was my favorite by far. For all the others, they were just improving their base trait or finding it in minor conflict with something, whereas in this story her very base trait was completely the problem. She learned probably the most real lesson that has been on the show yet (look out for #1) and overcame it on account of her generosity and that she had built strong enough friendships that it wasn't actually HER to overcome it, but them together.
Also, I really appreciated that they took time to actually demonstrate how generous she was before the conflict to make it believable, and then after she had seen the consequences of the explicit lesson reverted to being generous by nature.
PS In line with my previous notes of weird stuff happening that can't just be throw aways, how 'bout that ending scene?

EPISODE 247: Jewel of a Duel, Part 9
"Now, Princess Sparkle, you have only one turn before my Orbital Friendship Cannon turns your life total into a smoldering pile of ash! And remember, this is a Shadow Game, so when you lose, you're banished straight to the moon!" Rarity said. She laughed maniacally for twenty seconds before going to a commercial break.
"Not so fast, Rarity!" Twilight said. "It's my turn, and with the harmony of the cards on my side, I can't possibly lose!" Somehow using her entire body to accentuate the action, Twilight drew a card from her disk, lifting it up towards the sky like the hoof of an angry god.
"Don't be foalish, Twilight. There's not a card in your deck that can save you now!" Rarity said.
"That's where you're wrong, as I play the suspiciously narrow card, Celestia Ex Machina! This card destroys all Machine-Type monsters on the field that begin with the letter "O", and also does three thousand damage to you for every card destroyed for some reason!" Twilight said.
"No! It's not possible! Why would you even have a card like that in your deck?" Rarity said.
"Because YOLO!" Princess Twilight said, slamming the card down on her Duel Disk with the force of a thousand burning suns. Rarity screamed a "No" that would put a professional bodyguard to shame as her life total hit zero. Rainbows surrounded her body as she was banished to the Lunar Realm.
"Wow, Twilight." Spike said. "I wish I could duel like that. I mean, I've lost literally every duel I've ever appeared in except that one plot-critical one in Season 2, so maybe I'm not the best one to ask this, but why did you have that card in your deck?"
"I cheated, Spike." Twilight said. "There's no such thing as the harmony of the cards, you moron."
