I mean no offense to nohbrows, but his post doesn't actually say anything informative. Up until he starts linking to stuff, there's nothing there but an extremely long-winded way of telling someone why they might have clicked the thread (they already know), then another half-dozen paragraphs that say, "Your question has already been answered, but here it is again, since I'm nice enough to answer you." Then it's just a bunch of links that would require a huge time investment to go through, many of which are meant more for people that already like the show. I would be put off or mildly offended by it if I just came in to see why this thread was so huge.

I agree with FnF's posts the most; as I started to get at in my previous post, it's become really unclear over time why I continued watching the show after following a recommendation to give it its first chance. There's stuff I can easily say I like now, and there's no questioning that the characters grab the viewer's interest in some way, but I know that many of the most skillfully done aspects of the show were not actually selling points for me, even if they're really cool to look at in retrospect.

Also, it's funny that Ianuus mentioned Suited for Success, because that episode and Naughty Dog developer Jacob Minkoff's subsequent blog post about it actually did give me a huge boost in respect for artists of all kinds. I'd not previously been exposed to Sondheim's version of the song or its origin work, but both the original and the MLP take on it are brilliant. I could really relate from my experience as a programmer with a year of studies in game design. I loved Sweet and Elite for much the same reason; it subtly (or not-so-subtly) mocks the blind nature of trends and those who look to big names to decide what they should like. Hence, why I said Rarity's songs tend to actually be quite intelligent, even if most of the song lyrics are devoid of meaning and simply describe what is going on.

You watch too much TV. Quirky things show up when presentability is separated from grounds for production, and do we produce a lot. Bound to come across a few duds, even with our peer quality control. Just gotta L2Internet & filter 'em out.

I'm… not sure that's even important. Given the sheer volume of content, dismissing as trolls every unflattering representation of what we can do would be quite the folly. Might as well address the topic of "fandoms are weird" from the root up.

Generally, a person's entertainment feed is an echo chamber of very presentable people who're there by virtue of being very presentable. Whereas, if you take a mostly unconditional slice of a population, you will have a majority of outliers to that established standard.

The thing is, however, that most of those people don't tend to express themselves very much, and when they do, they usually wind up with double-digit views on YouTube, and therefore are largely invisible to the public eye. This changes with fandoms' passion and infrastructure. The odd fellow you find in a convention picture? No different than a significant portion of whatever other community you're part of and/or hold in esteem. Only, the latter you will never see, so you mirror and judge others against the "better" group's previously mentioned squeaky-clean echo chamber.

StarCraft is a great game, but we're not members of a secret club full of brilliant Korean elites. Personally, I'm more proud of being part of a fandom that inspires those who'd otherwise never come to light.

Yeah, gonna have to agree with FnF on the whole "fandoms are weird" thing. But my default view of the world is "everyone is weird in some way," so it's all good. People are going to do what they want, and as long it doesn't hurt others, it doesn't make a difference to me.

FoxyMayhem's friend hit the nail on the head his piece on the characters, and I'd like to expand his/her "there is no One True Way" thing a little further. Not only does the show champion diverse characters who refuse to fit into perfect little archetype molds, it also shows that radically different people can get along and even become best friends if they're not focusing on the petty differences that serve as the driving force of most shows, from angsty teenage dramas to soap operas and beyond.

What makes us the same is more important than what makes us different, and I think MLP:FiM exemplifies that really well, better than perhaps anything else on TV right now (though I wouldn't know, I spend too much time on the internet to watch TV).

AFAIK, the only existing Asian dub for MLP currently is a Japanese fandub, unfortunately.
