The whole episode thing seems very impromptu on his part and not very thought out given the fact that he outright bludgeons Them to change with desception,(large stone looks like gem to Rarity) lies (Cloudsdale / Your friendship will be destroyed) Blunt force (fluttershy) etc.

And since it took both Luna and Celestia, if you assume my first sentence true, that means he's been sealed for more than 1000 years, likely long before he could've had a hoof in NMM's original rebellion, nor her return.
With the others, they were deceived, but they allowed themselves to stray from their original goal. They got sidetracked and didn't stick to the plan. If they had ignored Discord's attempts of luring them in, Discord would've been forced to appear and change them himself, and if they were together, they probably would've had a fighting chance at resisting it.
Yes, a lot of assumptions, but we don't exactly have a ton of hard facts.

+ Show Spoiler +Luna and Celestia imprisoned him together yes. This in turn could mean he had more than a hoof in sowing the seeds that eventually grew into NMM. Not saying he did but it would make sense that Discord in fighting the two talked more with Luna than Celestia to work his magic.

+ Show Spoiler +That seems possible, he's been shown to be an intelligent and skilled manipulator, he seems like he could at least make any existing resentment from Luna come out and start to grow, even if not initially.

Oh darn, I got all excited  Felt a bit like meeting TLO in person (MLG columbus! :D Signed my mouse pad and I got a pic with him). Ah well, it was still a fun event, and it was nice talking to the other bronies. I lost at 3:30 though ^^; I hung on pretty well but I had to go to bed 'cause I've got somewhere I've got to be today.

Episode was v. good, much better than Season 1 pilot episodes. Not gonna spoil anything for anyone but don't expect too many laughs.
Watched in 480p and by time I was done the 720p and DVDrips were up on http://www.equestriadaily.com/
I sacrificed watching Dreamhack for this, but the decision wasn't even hard. More MLP, more skill!
