I'm not such a huge power metal or symphonic metal fan, since a lot sounds like pre-fab keyboards with corny guys singing cheesy lyrics. But this song needs to be in this topic. And so does Dio.

Therion is the best! I think they found good combo of pacing and style and prog elements to keep it interesting unlike heavy symph style guys

Hmm, i see a lot of symphonic metal in this thread so I go on with some power-metal by a band named Sabaton

And btw: I prefer a good live-performance more than an well recorded but never live played song

Interesting trivia: 5 of the top 9 highest user rated symphonic metal albums are Therion ones. That says something about the genre heavyweight.

I want to like this stuff, but a lot of it is just bad thrash metal with cellos and violins. A few of the bands posted above (like Nightwish) proficiently incorporate the symphonic component into their music, but most don't really do it well.

A bit long/epic, Sympony X but its good--- the climax/conclusion/epilogue still gives me chills, somehow it ties into everything you've heard before in such a brilliant way. It actually made me go out and read a translation of the Odyssey

from new maiden album, yeah, not technically power metal, but power metal essentally comes from them:

Kamelot is probably my favorite band. I was pretty sad when Khan left, especially since I missed my chance to see them live a few years back. Blah.

I'll admit that I don't know quite a few names in the genre, but I find a lot of the bands pretty boring, probably due to the vocals. Other than Kamelot most of the bands I like have female vocalists since I just can't get behind the average power metal vocalist.

Not that I think Rhapsody/Blind Gaurdian/Sonata Artica/Symphony X etc. are bad, they just aren't that exciting for me.

yeah, I totally hear ya-- but their complex guitar more than makes up for it-- they also have awesome bass-lines =)

(and jordan rudess has converted me to the belief that synth can be epic)

oh, and, the previous maiden songs I posted kinda pumped me up-- powerslave was so revolutionary of an album. Would power metal exist without it today? not sure...

if you do nothing else to learn about this genre, you need to at least listen to aces high and 2 minutes to midnight-- and remember, it was 1984.

Grew up with Nightwish and Sonata Arctica my entire teen period.
Recently started listening to Sabaton as well, really good to listen to while you're gaming. Dreamtale are also pretty good, heard of them thanks to GSL.

It's definitely up there, but my personal favorite is She Is My Sin. Every time I play this song, I think of the second zerg mission in Starcraft 1. Had this song on demo (had just discovered Nightwish then) and played it and a few others on repeat constantly while playing.
