Discussing the show and past episodes is fine. Do not put things that have happened in the TV series in spoilers. However, don't spoil things from the books that may happen in future episodes. Put book spoilers in spoiler tags with a CLEAR WARNING that it is from the book. |

Otis had about 30 walkers chewing on him, I doubt theres much left, much like the half a body in the first ep.
Though he was a big lad. Perhaps there was enough to go around.

Watch the mini episodes for season 2. If they can justify that zombie still having something left to be...zombie. They could have for Otis too. I just think it would have been interesting to watch it chip away at Shane.
PS: I did say mangled.

She didn't kill him, and you need to hit a walker in the head to kill them, she didn't even hit him in the arm. She GRAZED his arm.

She actually grazed his head. An inch or two to the left and he would have been dead.

Oh yeah, you're right. Still, grazing a zombie doesn't kill them. She sucks.

She sucked, would be more apt. Following that little fuck-up, she received additional training and it would seem her marksmanship has improved quite a bit.

one of the better twists i've seen on TV recently

Target acquisition is just as important. Not to mention she just lacked any common sense in that scene. There are like 10 guys surrounding what she thought was a walker. Instead of letting one of them kill it with a knife, she just takes it upon herself to start firing at a target she couldn't even identify through the scope.

I haven't read the comic, but it appears to me that wasn't a character decision, it was a writing gimmick. I just let it go, she looked stupid so the writers would be able to do what they wanted with Daryl.

Yeah i was more trying to show the comparison. Why is Andrea so stupid, when in a similar circumstance Shane is lauded?
Both killed (or tried too) a survivor so that they could save others.
Yet, one is a pragmatist and the other a moron? It seems the only difference is success of the murder.
Otis and Daryl also were both the fringe guys with useable skills. Roughly equivalent. Dunno, it seems wrong to ascribe two different reactions when motivations were the same.
*side note, this is two people Andrea failed to kill now. I wish she would've offed herself although that scene did make Dale a boss.

The reaction is different because a lot of people agree with Shane's vision that the barn is unbeliavable dangerous, so they think Shane made the right decision in cleaning it up (maybe they disagree with the method, but they'd vote for the killing).
Andrea was just plain stupid, really. She had a bad vision of her target, she wasn't a gun expert, and there were like 10 grown armed men running at the "walker". Her decision was stupid because she used resources she shouldn't have, in a position that wasn't ideal and without having the proper skills to do it.

ok I gave in and bought the first volume of The Walking Dead.

On top of that, she was warned not to shoot and chose not to heed that request because she wanted to 'prove herself' but instead looked like a complete moron.
Andrea pisses me off actually. I don''t feel sympathetic to her situation because she is (and Amy was also) annoying as fuck with the whole independent woman thing going on.
I want Glenn to come out and be the boss that he's being hyped up and built up to be and (I hope) become, along with Deryl, Rick's new go-to-guys instead of Shane who is clearly on the path of character destruction.
I just rewatched season 1 as well and had completely forgotten about the secret Jenner told Rick. I remember thinking at the time he told Rick about Lori being preggers but it was also mentioned in the radio call Rick made to Morgan so that thread is still to unravel. Not to mention that chopper from S01E01! So excited for February

Those situations were a lot different. For Andrea she didn't even remotely save anyone, nor did she shoot out of safety. She was trying to prove herself and everyone else (especially to the old man) that she's as good with guns - and wasting bullets - as the lot of them. The situation was under control her pride, narcissistic sense of self-accomplishment and bloodlust/need for revenge got the better of her, however - see how good she feels using her gun the first time after that. At that point with the rifle she was filling the role of that annoying adolescent taking a school prank too far to show off or prove something stupid to him/herself.
Shane's situation was worse, you could see him constantly blaming Otis for everything though and quite appreciates him being the live-bait securing the escape from the gym hall. It comes down to the "accident", that everyone seems to regard it as just that, apart from Shane who I believe sees it as recklessness, hunting (loudly) in a forest full of zombies, without having a car nearby, and not or only scarcely using the scope on that damn rifle. If Otis had instantly killed Carl, the eye-for-eye situation to beat the (un)living crap out of Otis wouldn't have proved so immoral even for Rick's standards. It's just that only delayed, Shane even tried to sacrifice himself. If 1. he had fatally shot Otis that would've been mercy and faster getaway for Shane (screams sell on TV anyhow) and 2. he had come clean to at least someone about it he would look a lot better than he does now as well.
Lord of the Flies situation overall, do you kill in a civilised manner or not - heck, if I were them I'd only care about ammo and burn that funking barn down or starve the freaks to second death.

God, this thread has become awesome with 1 episode, i'm just glad we're arguing about the characters and who we loev/like/morals/etc and not about "NOT ENOUGH ZOMBIES DYING YOS".
This has really taken a positive turn. I think this is what Kirkman wanted all along, and glad to see this discussion happening. I'm kind of torn between both Mordifords and VediVici's points so... I'll just stay quiet =P

I agree he took it WAY too far by endangering everyone in the group by opening the barn, but prior to that, shooting the zombie in the chest several times, and pointing out that that is where her lungs would be, her heart, is the only way to show that they aren't alive. Hershel is a medical man, a vet, so obviously he knows good and well that any living thing would not be able to take several bullets to vital organs, as would anybody with any common sense left.
I agree with this.
Overall, I thought the episode was really really good. The best of the season so far no doubt. People are complaining about it still, but I feel if the previous episodes this season were all this level, the character development, the drama, etc would have been ever better and thus this finale would have been even better.
Can't wait for next half-season

One major difference is that Andrea thought she was killing a walker. She was being moronic because she shot at an incoming target that she couldn't see at a time when one or more members of the group were away from camp, and thus could be expected to return. She took the shot despite three men who had adequate weaponry and a demonstrated capability to deal with walkers having a much clearer and closer view of the situation. Furthermore, her shot risked drawing other walkers to camp, when a silent, up close kill would not do so.
Whatever your perspectives on Shane's killing of Otis, it was a decision made with complete information and a clear, deliberate purpose. It may well have been selfish, but it did also further the survival of other members of the group. Andrea's action was a foolish case of her trying to prove herself when she had been advised by the others, and should have known by her own common sense, that she was not in the best position to make the decision.

I actually like Shane, even if he looks like a jackass. He is so real and straight on point.
Also on another note; you don't know if the zombies are dead for real, that it's impossible to fix them or not. So I feel a bit sad for uhm, what is his name, well... the old farm-owner to see his family die.
