They are kinda okay and do the job, but can't compete with the great melodies they're playing.
Gotta make two recommendations to you guys.
The first one is Amenra. They're playing something between metal and hardcore in mid- to downtempo speed with great structural buildups in their songs. Vocals are changing between shouts and clear singing. Certainly not everybodys cup of tea, but worth a try. Great live band, too!
The second band is Russian Circles. Intricate instrumental metal with outstanding (!) drumming, a creative guitarist and some interesting bass play. It's just bursting with energy. I always feel like I've made the world a better place when I get someone to enjoy them
For further exploration, try their songs: Death rides a horse, Harper Lewis, Enter.
Amenra are gods. Seen them live a couple of times already, it's a crushing experience. Mass V is nothing short of a masterpiece.
I'm currently in search of new metal music but I'm having a bit of a problem. I really love the music by bands like insomnium, ensiferum and other metal (not just MDM), but I just cannot reconcile my acute distaste for the vocals (roaring / screaming / generally sounding like a raging hellspawn demon and not a human). I pretty much exclusively listen to Nightwish and Teräsbetoni (foreign lyrics are fine), dont mind Sonata Arctica either.
If anyone could recommend some bands to check out that are in a similar genre (notably power/symphonic but other is fine too) without ultra harsh vocals, I will construct a shrine to you and make daily offerings to both the old Gods and the new in your name
Posting here because it's pretty relevant (thread is quite generalised in terms of genre), and I dont really wanna necro power/symph thread. I will slowly be working through this thread and the power/symph as well over the next few days.
Some bands with good vocalists that comes to mind:

I'll add an emerging Swedish Power Metal band that was awesome both times I saw them live: Sabaton. Lyrics are (almost?) all about war history, which is pretty cool, too.
hey, cool thread. can't say the stuff posted recently is too up my alley, but to each their own of course. i'm more into black and death metal mostly, with some doom mixed in (sludge or funeral, usually). if anyone is familiar with the band or album from which my ID comes...major points to you.
weakling - dead as dreams is my favorite album, while black sabbath (ozzy, duh) is my favorite band (though i certainly have nothing against dio!) today i listened to Absu - Barathrum V.I.T.R.I.O.L...easily one of my favorite metal albums. any other fans?
at IEM katowice i heard jarrett cale mention that socke enjoys death metal and the like. anybody know anything about this, or has socke talked about this somewhere? just curious

Nice taste homie Absu are dope, saw them live once too.
Socke's taste in Metal is pretty normal from what I know. Machine Head and the likes. Goody digs Amon Amarth etc., and I know that Hasu is a pretty big Sabaton fan.
I wanted to show you guys this emerging prog metal project, Dahlian. The whole 'Dividual' EP is on this YouTube channel.
It's a one man project, so electric and acoustic guitars, bass, clean and death vocals, programmed drums and cello (!) are all done by the same guy. Enjoy!

Agalloch actually have 2 Germany-dates. One is 30th April here in Stuttgart.

This Dahlian reminds me a lot of Opeths production, prior to the newest one. Sounds very interesting; I'm gonna look into this once I have more time. Thanks!

Holy shit, this album just blew me away although I've known the band for a while. It's LEFT ME BREATHLESS, a german hardcore band with pretty progressive stuff. I don't know if you call that kind of stuff 'mathcore' but I don't really care either. It's just great crazy brutal melodic chaotic and yet pretty traditional hardcore/metalcore. Enjoy (full album right there).
How the hell did I miss this thread? Shame on my head o.0
Since some of my favourite bands are well known - such as Dark Tranquility, Swallow the Sun and Tyr - I will try to post songs of lesser known bands.
The first one has to be "Dawn of Solace - Wings of Darkness attached on the Children of the Light".
It was the first song I've heared of Tuomas Saukkonnen and it sucked me right into it. Although I don't really like the clean vocals that much the song as a whole creates quite a unique atmosphere.
After that I did some research and found his other projects, one of which is called "Black Sun Aeon". Again it features a very unique style of doom or whatever the fuck you want to call it:
Third project of him leans more towards death metal and is called "Before the Dawn". Albeit less creative it's still great music, especially their latest album:
Coming to think of it, Tuomas is one hell of a badass. If they are playing on a festival or nearby your location you should definately go for it, great live performances.
For those who prefer their doom without growls I can forward you to "The Foreshadowing", an italian doom metal band.
Also a very good band when it comes to their gigs. I usually use them to introduce friends of mine to doom who are not used to that kind of music.
Will post pagan influenced bands like moonsorrow or tyr and bands leaning towards black/death in a later post when I'm less derp.
Hell yeah, I got the last two tickets to the Agalloch show in Stuttgart on the 30th of April. They were limited to 250. This is going to be such a good show : )
There is a separate thread for djent, but I'll add that TesseracT, Meshuggah, The Contortionist and Vildhjarta all play this style of music, utilizing polyrythms and odd time signatures ^_^
Also, just want to make sure that you've heard Periphery WITH their singer, they're really great! ^^
Concealing Fate – TesseracT (didn't post a video because Concealing Fate is more of a suite than a single song.)
I know that at least TesseracT have released an instrumental version of their album "One", and I also believe that the second Periphery album has had an instrumental version of it released. I'm not sure about the rest ^^
