Mastodon is one of my favorite new(ish) bands to the metal scene. They are doing some awesome stuff. Honestly, Crack the Skye is one of my top ten albums of all time... Maybe, I'll have to reevaluate that later. My favorites: + Show Spoiler + http://youtu.be/v-Su1YXQYek Opeth. I won't waste your time discussing this band. Just... awesome. Mikael Akerfeldt is a metal GENIUS even if they're not your cup of tea at first I GUARANTEE there is something in their discography for you (assuming you like metal at all). Although, their tendency to have longer songs may turn off haters of prog. So here's a mix of variety/my favorites for your pleasure: + Show Spoiler + One of my favorites, good mix of heaviness, growls, and clean singing/lighter sounds Here's some clean sung songs: Quintessential Opeth right here, I love this \m/ Favorite song off their new album which is a super different direction then their others, but still good IMO Metallica. I grew up on this and they are almost completely responsible for my taste in music. I've been listening to this stuff since before I could walk, talk or use the toilet. I could just post all of Kill 'Em All through Justice, but I'll refrain and keep it small  + Show Spoiler + Favorite Metallica song, but only barely Probably next favorite Honorable mentions: RIP Cliff Tool. Probably my favorite band. Their mix of intellectual art-metal, jazz influence, musicality/talent, immersing yourself in their music is an experience like none other (and I don't even partake in drugs, but I'm sure they make it even more epic). I have more respect for Maynard, Carey, Jones, and Chancellor individually than I do for most other musicians combined. Maynard's lyrics are powerful, Jones' guitar illuminating and driving and his visual contribution to the band is crucial to their identity, and Carey and Chancellors' rhythm and driving foundation for the music and the band are some of the best in the business. Tool is IMO the most true-to-themselves band in a long long time for as long as they've been around. If you've never heard them, or are curious, watch this: + Show Spoiler + Here's a sample of their music that I love. Enjoy: + Show Spoiler + Here's some great examples of their visual side, created by Adam Jones with help from artist Alex Grey Greatest Cover song EVER IMO, so incredible Led Zeppelin. If you need me to explain why these guys are here, you can politely just shut your face hole and just listen to the awesome  + Show Spoiler + Compare this to the Tool version and bask in the mutual awesomeness of each version. I sometimes listen to the two version back to back and over and over and over... so good ABSOLUTELY favorite Zeppelin song. Protip: Learn this on guitar and slay the ladies with your awesome. You could be cross-eyed and have a Picasso face and they'd love you Rush. RUSH IS VARIETY MAN!!!! (if you get that reference, you're the man) If you don't already love this band, please give them a chance, Geddy's singing can be tiring for new comers, but this band... oh man... Some might say they're not "heavy metal" or even "metal" at all, but frankly, I disagree, and besides, pretty much every member of every band posted in this thread will at least respect Rush for their influence on them, if they haven't worshiped them since the 70's. + Show Spoiler + BEST GUITAR SOLO EVER. NO QUESTION. But in all seriousness, the first solo in this song is the greatest thing to ever hit my ears. EVER. I'm currently in a listening marathon of this song where I listen to it at least once a day everyday for 2112 days. On day 42, still one of my favorite pieces of music ever written in any genre since the creation of music. And the song that got them where they are today: Dream Theater. Best progressive metal band around IMO. You want to be impressed? google: Dream theater Meta-album and see what you find. They are the epitome of talent and awesome. Also cool things to read about Dream theater: the story behind Metropolis pt2, and Dream Theater's(Mike Portnoy's) 12 Step Suite. + Show Spoiler + This song is... beautiful, to put it simply. It was mentioned almost immediately in this thread and I thank that poster sincerely. This is so good. The level of composition in this song is beyond most people ability to appreciate, and I myself have listened to this song hundreds of times and I don't count myself among that number. Just... listen man. Listen closely. Look up the wiki on it if you want to know the details behind the composition and the epic nature of it. Now that that soapbox speech is through here's some of my favorites: Animals As Leaders. Another incredible new band. I really want more people to know this stuff and love it as much as me. Tosin Abasi is A BOSS... E + Show Spoiler + Woe to you oh earth and sea, for the devil send the beast with wrath because he knows the time is short. Let him hath understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number... its number is six-hundred and sixty-six... IRON FUCKING MAIDEN. This band IS heavy metal for me. No sub genre, no bullshit, just HEAVY METAL, even now after so many years. Long live IRON MAIDEN. I am almost positive all of these are re-posts, but I want them to be all in one place for all to enjoy. So enjoy \m/ + Show Spoiler + That's all I'm gonna post as far as those kinds of lists go, but here's some other great heavy metal influences and other bands that I think are worth mentioning in any metal conversation: Death. If you like Death metal, you should like Death out of principal, they were and are best as far as I'm concerned. RIP Chuck + Show Spoiler + Rage Against the Machine. Not necessarily "Metal" But you can definitely get your head bang on to their music, plus Tom Morello is the man. + Show Spoiler + I actually got a speeding ticket driving too fast because of this song... Trivium. I REALLY don't get along well with this band... save for this ONE song... + Show Spoiler + System of a Down isn't for everyone, but I sure dig it. Here's my two favorites: + Show Spoiler + Alice in Chains. Another barely-metal submission, if at all, but if the first post had A7x, I'm ok breaking the rules alittle to make up for that. I've grown up on this band for almost as long as Metallica. Yay for being a 90's baby + Show Spoiler + Russian Circles. I hate to be a hipster... but you've probably never heard of them. If you have, you're awesome. If not, join me in hipsterdom and love them before everyone else!! + Show Spoiler + Scale The Summit. Saw them open for Dream Theater on the Prog Nation tour 2010. I was instantly a huge fan. + Show Spoiler + Primus. I laugh every time I play some of this for metal heads and they cringe. Its so cute PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!+ Show Spoiler + Mercyful Fate... \m/ classic + Show Spoiler + Diamond Head. Once again... \m/ classic man. Just classic. + Show Spoiler + Isis. Awesome post-metal. + Show Spoiler + Chimaira. Not sure how exactly I got into this band. Probably because its FUCKING AWESOME to headbang to. + Show Spoiler + If you hate the singing (I know I did at first) Give this a listen: Holy cow... this post has gone on FOREVER... I apologize for the length, I got a little carried away. Metal/rock/all music is kind of a passion for me. But there it is, my two cents (maybe this is more like 10 cents) on metal. | ||
