Ensiferum's new album called ''Unsung heroes'' is coming out in couple of weeks. Just pre-ordered my copy(lol first time I've pre-ordered anything). Here's a small taste.
What do you guys actually think about growling and screaming vocals? I cannot stand them at all which is a shame because I have tried to listen to black/death metal and even though I like a lot of the music the vocals just ruin it for me. I get why some like it because it kind of fits in with the music but still.

I don't remember what my reaction was years and years ago when first introduced to that kind of vocals, I don't think I liked it very much though. But I liked everything else enough so I just kept listening and eventually I just became completely indifferent to the vocals, as if they were just another instrument and they had to be there. If you let them grow on you then they will.
However I know there are others that absolutely love the vocals and really listen to the lyrics and such.
I'm not 15 and full of angst so I don't know what passes for "real metal" these days but have some taaaasty licks!
Wow way to be a condescending asshat for no discernible reason... some people

Personally I feel like with a different vocal approach extreme metal would simply not be as good. The powerful growls or hellish shrieks just add to the intensity and mood of the songs. I for one am very picky with the vocals and the reason I don't listen to that many popular modern metal bands is because their cleans are just atrociously whiny IMO. (though that's mostly the case for metalcore)
If you really "like a lot of the music" you could perhaps try to listen regardless. I know I personally wasn't too fond of them either when I got into death metal for the first time but have since grown to love them.
Some bands with really good vocalists off the top of my head: Opeth, Amon Amarth, Death, Morbid Angel, God Dethroned, In Flames (first few albums and EPs), Dark Tranquillity, Edge of Sanity, Entombed, Dismember, Insomnium, Decapitated, Vader etc.
Hope that helps.
Also, to contribute to the thread, I would like to say that the new Testament album, Dark Roots Of Earth is quite good and you all should check it out. Sweet riffs, great vocal performance, great rhythm and the sick Skolnick trademark soloing. Probably not as good as The Legacy or The New Order but a very solid effort and one of their best for sure. \m/
Time to post some amazing Folk Metal, starting with my favorite band of all time, Arkona. Black Folk Metal, Masha has both amazing clean vocals and growls. Extremely impressive vocal performance.
Then probably my second favorite band in the genre, Грай, who have an amazing melodic Folk Metal album with a ton of fluteplay that's incredibly catchy. Also has great drumwork. Very underrated and they're releasing a new single soon which I can't wait for.
This band hadn't even sold an EP online yet when I found them as their paypal wasn't working until I mentioned it. Another case of excellent vocals and great violin play.
This is my favorite metal release of 2012. It's progressive ethnic folk death metal. Yes, that's a lot of genre names, but it has a great middle eastern vibe to it that really works for the record.
As long as the guy has a powerful way of doing it, it's cool. I just see it as another instrument as well, I never pay attention to lyrics or vocals anyway >_<. As long as the voice fits in, it's all good.
So many more songs to post... anything from Jester Race to Clayman is nothing short of epic, I like their new stuff aswell but it doesn't have as good lyrics.

I personally find growls and other forms of harsh vocals to be an essential component of extreme metal. Other vocal styles just wouldn't fit. I especially like vocalists who have a distinct, recognizable voice like Frank Mullen, Lord Worm on Blasphemy Made Flesh or the guy from Demilich. Pig squeals I don't mind much if they're used in moderation at specific parts of a song, but screamo vocals and the type of screaming that a lot of metalcore bands and melodeath bands employ are really annoying, as are vocals like Alex Laiho's, because they're really shrill and literally sound like like random screaming that anyone can do.

I rate your trolling skills a 0.2/10. In the unlikely event that you're serious, I'll let Darkthrone speak for me:

They're an acquired taste for sure. I absolutely hated them when I was first getting into metal 5-6 years ago, but now I'll happily sing along to even the harshest of black metal songs. If you want to get into black/death metal, I suggest you simply listen to a lot of black/death songs, even if the vocals are a bit grating to begin with.
Here is a really nice black metal song without vocals:
