A lot of people don't seem to like it because it's not trve or kvlt enough and all that bullshit. I think it adds perfectly to the sense of chaos and disorientation that runs through this album, especially on tracks like "The Grave". As a side note, I wish Ihsahn would go back to the vocal style he used in Emperor. Way better than his current style ![]()

You can download it for free, really enjoying it thus far. There is a review of it on the site too that'd be better than one I could write here so I spose i'll just give a quick idea of what it is. It's like a heavy metal style with thrash progressive and power metal influences, really cool music with some really cool harmonies/melodies. You can listen to a preview before downloading it on that site ^^ Definitely worth the listen.

It also adds a wailing sound in some songs. I just hope he doesn't get all Opeth and completely cut out metal.

It was hit and miss for me on that album...on some, it was pretty interesting, on others, it got to be annoying. I haven't listened to Eremita yet, though. Imo After is one of the best albums of any genre out of the past 10 or so years. Brilliant from start to finish. On the other hand I've had trouble getting into Eremita, gonna give it another try here soon though.

This is gonna sound odd, but you not only get used to that vocal style but you grow to like it lol. It's just another instrument that adds to the power that is death metal. Just listen to an album while gaming or something, it will click eventually.

I believe Frantic Disembowelment is the only song they have that has a non-vocal version. And if you only like instrumental metal you should check out Blotted Science and Animals as Leaders

I personally don't like their newer stuff, but Images & Words, Awake, Scenes From a Memory and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence are fucking undeniable.

The bassist is Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse, for anyone who didnt know. I LOVED their first album, and actually havent even heard their 2011 album yet. I just got it, but want to wait until I have a big bag of weed before I give it a listen. lol.

Also I don't know how something without vocals can be classified as death metal -- aren't the vocals the only thing that separates heavy metal from death metal?

Nah, the vocals are one of the main thins that separate the two, but other important differences include riffs, which in death metal are either quite slow and crushing or, more often, very fast tremolo picking; guitars are often downtuned in death metal; drumming tends to be very fast and often technical, employing lots of double bass, blast beats and fast fills; solos in death metal are more often than not very fast and technical (obviously there are exceptions). A fairly representative song to illustrate these differences IMHO: + Show Spoiler +
