Here's the account. http://dotabuff.com/players/176890997 Conspiracy theory is that Valve has some sort of "watch list" for smurf detection, and has somehow linked my actual account to this one, and raped the MMR accordingly.

Just out of curiosity, why are you grinding a friends account?

I know that if you start a brand new account, it'll only take 10-15 wins/games to get pretty close to your MMR. What's confusing me is that this is a new account that's 3 wins 11 losses and is still "pretty close" to my actual MMR. And I haven't played good / near my actual MMR on it... so I'm wondering how it decided to smurf detect me. It's mostly an appeal to Yangod, basically. Or other mystic source of insider dota knowledge.

Then again I'm talking straight out of my ass, so there's that. Though it does explain why you'll get people at high matchmaking after only a handful of games.

Does casting Repel on a unit under effects of your Ultimate still remove effects of the Ultimate? I think it used to but it may have changed in a patch. Is a friendly unit under the effects of Repel not affected when I cast my Ultimate nearby? When would I want to Repel an enemy hero?

Repel no longer removes positive buffs from allies as of 6.81. Ulti gets applied thru repel for sure. Best use for repel on enemy is to make them unaffected by naga song.

Or other mystic source of insider dota knowledge. The general understanding is that your individual performance somehow factors into your early provisional matches (maybe first 20 or so?). Also, your changes in MMR are much more drastic early on. The idea is that if you're playing at a 5k level, your influence on the game and your performance will reflect that you dramatically outclass everyone else in the game, so the amount of rating you'll earn is therefore inflated to allow you to reach your intended MMR more quickly. This means weird things can happen in your first few games on a new account, like gaining rating for losing depending on how you did in that game.
