Nevermind the fact that his lane partner has been stealing lasthits, or went to jungle at lv4 and left him solo and underlevelled against a dual stun, or the team did nothing to create pressure and let the T1 safe fall, or that someone else is about to start pushing safelane and clearing jungle the instant am does get his bf. Or, just the fact that the dual lane containing a passive carry - surprise, surprise - didn't actually force the opposing pair out of lane. Pubs are pubs. Timings have to be nearly useless in <5-stack games, unless they're qualified with "full support, destroyed lane, X kills/towers" etc.

Is there some kind of weird control mechanic I'm not getting here?

Unless you take too long to turn around for lifting him I can't see something that would prevent you from it.

No idea about Split Shot, though if I understand correctly it won't miss against evasion targets in dota1. No idea about dota2.

There is a small window of time where SB is magic immune when charging, right before hitting. So if you take too long, he will connect. Also, his ulti gives the same magic immunity. This frustrates me to no end when trying to stun/stop his charge. Specially since I don't have stellar ping.

If you're picking an am, you shouldn't be happy unless you have a 13 minute bf/treads. Either unhappy with yourself for messing up, or unhappy with the other team for making your lane hell. If the othe team makes your lane hell, your items are going to go out the window, maybe you'll be happy to have a 10 minute treads/ring.

No. He's never magic immune during charge, only during the cast time of his ultimate

13min bf/treads is not realistic in pubs unless you have legit supports and have really terrible opponents. my bf/treads timing when contested is anywhere sub 20mins. sometimes it will get delayed even further. and when my lane is uncontested i go 11ck/min and end the game before 30mins. timings are pointless in pubs even on very straightforward heroes like am. you just gotta adapt to the situation and perhaps even skip bf in some games.

What's exactly the border between a good target time->impossible? A good target time that works from normal mmr to very high mmr to pro levels is nonsensical. Until you're burning level, you can always do better, so an ideal time should be your target. If you're going to practice (a free farm) am, you should be gauging how far off your performances are from your target, and then you'll know exactly how far off you are. Knowing you're 2 minutes off 13 tells you more than being +30 seconds off of 14:30. I think assuming one tier 1 is reasonable. Perfect cs with one tier 1 last hit and no neutrals is slightly under 13 (12 something if you've farming near their tier 2).
