hey,
i just started playing dota2 and wanna play AI games until i get a general understanding of the game. First thing i realized is im a total scrub.

My question is: Is there something like a list of heroes that are recommended for getting started, mechanically not that demanding or something? I googled but couldn't find what i was looking for, so im hoping you guys can help me out here. A quick list of heronames from some more or less experienced(to help me out u probably dont need to be good at all) would help already as finding guides for champs doesn't seem that hard.

im posting here because the guide index thread has been out of use for a while, i hope you don't mind.

Shortly after I started maybe 6 months ago I found Purge's guides. This one mentions some good starting heroes (along with a lot of other good info) like Lich, Tide, Sven, Centaur. Uncomplicated mechanics heroes that still have a lot to contribute to a game. Skeleton King is one of the few carries listed but I'm not sure if the recent addition of a second active skill makes him any less noob friendly. I think Lich is particularly good since you can learn about last hitting and controlling the lane with Sacrifice. It's also helpful to lane with people who know going in and don't mind that you're learning a hero.

Play SK only if you want to die of boredom. Most heroes only have a few abilities anyway. I recommend windrunner as you need to learn to position well to get shackles off but you also have an escape, and powershot is fun to snipe with. Juggernaut is another good one as even a beginner can get kills with him and his abilities are obvious and fun. Whatever hero you use there will still be a somewhat tough learning curve.

I don't honestly understand the obsession with giving new players heroes with just point-and-click skills. Obviously you can't give a new player something ridiculous like Meepo, but the most basic skillshots are intuitive after using them once or twice, and being able to use them successfully is good positive feedback for a new player. There's absolutely no reason why Leshrac or Lina should be out of the question for a new player and they're much more fun heroes to play than something like Lich.

I feel like a good approach to picking a hero to start with is going to the learn tab, selecting something based on the face, and reading the skills. If you feel you understand the skills, go play that hero. And do that often, don't fall into the trap of playing one hero too much.

This would work a lot better if the invoker portrait wasn't so badass.

^bro did you mean QoP, her responses made me wet ahem feel so good.

For 'serious' beginner players i recommend Lich Tide Jakiro Sandking. Otherwise go play whatever he/she thinks is cool. It is really about having the fun at first and the visuals of the heroes matter.

I've been playing a lot of timbersaw lately, and as long as I get levels in lane and a pair of manaboots I can still contribute to teamfights which allow me to get a decently timed bloodstone, which sets my farm up nicely to contribute all game long.

What other heroes would be good like this? I'm thinking leshrac, maybe a beastmaster? Preferrably sidelane heroes, as my friend I play with almost always takes mid.

LUNA!

Lunalunalunalunaluna.

Lucent beam is a bigfat nuke that makes you relevant early game and helps you secure kills.

Glaives are something you can ignore early game, but lategame (provided you've done well!) they're fun little bouncing bits of pain that you don't have to think about, they just -happen-

Lunar blessing does two things. One, it ensures that you'll have "enough" damage to lasthit effectively, and two, it lets you actively see why CS is important, how important CS is, and see what happens when you do / don't CS effectively. Sure, this is true on every hero, but it's -easier- to time the last hit on Luna than it is on other carries, because you have a broader damage range than you might on other heroes.

Lastly, Eclipse is a midgame teamfight ult that teaches you a lot. It's a very useful ult in certain situations, and you'll start to keep an eye out for situations where it would be useful. It also, to an extent, removes the temptation to just afk and farm like you might on heroes such as alchemist, naga, or void

So Lucent beam is just a q-click, Eclipse is just an R, and a 330 range, 330 movespeed carry means you've got very little in terms of mechanical demand, but quite a lot to think about both in terms of your immediate positioning, and your overarching plan for the game. She's fairly easy to play, and gives you the opportunity to analyze your own play to make accurate assesments on what went wrong in the game.

Dark seer, enigma, clock, bat seems like good initiator/ teamfight heroes and they can play well offlane
Tho bat/ enigma do need dagger for best result imho.

Low maintenance supports e.g. leshrac, lina, tide, sd works too i guess

Guide index is not really 'out of use' though as I still maintain it. You also don't need to be too worried about bumping stickies.

I think if you level up the bear, you can resummon it straight away, even if it has taken damage.
