well centaur had a bit of a tradeoff.

DP's only had ghosts added and damage cap removed. Remember her old damage cap was 500 dmg for any hero/building

DP's damage does scale sorta-- in that armour reduction increases its damage. If your team builds a deso, ac, medalion, or has skills which decrease armour (and get better with levels) and have a way to keep their team in her ult range, you can significantly increase her damage output as the game progresses. Something like an aggressive slardar trilane who farms medalion blink ac with a solo weaver building deso with a mid dp has a lot of dps boosting synergy, along with the lockdown and initiation of slardar. Could be strong vs the common bkb carries/naix we see in the current meta. Alternatively could use naga for initiation and armour reduction, and/or a dazzle for his ult.

While DP is lacking in the way of gank potential, I think her ability to push down mid tower if the opposing mid is away ganking is a sufficient enough tool to help snowball the game for your team relative to other mids' abilities to do so. Her lack of an escape is annoying, but if that doesn't result in the game snowballing out of control for the other team then I think DP's teamfight utility can make up for it. However, unlike other teamfight-ult-depedant heroes; if the other team is drafted/playing to avoid teamfights, she can use her abilities to push instead. I think within specific drafting scenarios (dependant on opposing team's draft and the overall lanes) DP can be a competetive mid at the highest level.

What about her early build? I see it as awkward in faster paced competitive games. She has a mediocre base damage so she's somewhat reliant on swarm for gold, but at the same time you really want to hit a strong timing for the mid levels where she's strong. The two goals seem to be at odds a bit where she needs to cover her mana costs for both pushing and farming as well as survival items to hit a strong timing. She also can't grab items to boost her vs hero DPS (medallion, Atos, or whatever) because she's always stretched thin by needing survival and mana items.

Her skill build also makes the timing awkward to an extent I think. Her silence is pretty mediocre until it lasts longer (3s is ok, but it's not great or anything); but it's kind of impossible to level it early because you need WC and swarm so badly.

Plus she can't stop people from TPing away from her.

This isn't a problem because she's not a solo-kill/gank hero in the first place. She's never going to be in the scenario where she's the only one there to kill someone and can't interrupt a TP because that's not how the hero plays.

with DP, (in my opinion), the goal is not to kill but to survive and farm. This makes it difficult for her when she goes against imba heros like batrider (nerf batrider plz). But for most heroes she does ok.

DP really sucks later in the game because of the armor thing already brought up (but in the reverse it was brought up before, since her ult is physical damage). A totally negative armor strat might keep her viable for longer but it's really not a viable strategy after a certain point in the game anyways. Almost every carry in the game either gets massive amounts of armor from stats or items, and DP also has issues with most illusion heroes since she's strictly single target DPS. CK/PL are especially problematic - after Carrion Swarm stops being able to 1 shot PL illusions she just dies even with a Eul's or something.

She kind of suffers from the heroes who have issues because they need solo XP but can't go mid because they are so easily ganked thanks to smoke. Very hard to figure out where to lane her.

i think she can still outcarry most "hard" carries out till the 50 minute mark. I'd take a fully stacked DP in a 1v1 over any carry at that point.

of course dota isnt about 1v1 but still. maybe in a 75 min game her effectiveness will wane but 50 min is good for me.

edit: well yeah, she definitely can push. I guess what i mean is i don't get why people think of DP as *strictly* a push hero.

50 Minutes is incredibly generous considering her main damage source (her ulti) caps at level 16.

dp works really well with things that keep people in place for a long time (cw, es, beastmaster, veno, etc)
she's not that easy to gank mid. dp has 600 range, good base hp, and a long range nuke. she's no qop but it's not too bad
dp doesn't really have mana problems either, arcanes + bottle or euls is easily enough to cover for mana costs

i think her real issue is that it's too easy to abuse her ult cd, since she's really just not that good when her ulti's not up

I think she's much more gankable than Storm Spirit, especially before witchcraft raises her movement speed (her base MS is what makes me think of her as a very tasty, gankable target).

The ult thing is also true. Hero is pretty useless without it. Either the duration or CD feels wrong, comparing it to a hero like Alchemist who also sucks when his ult is down at least it's only down for 20 seconds between castings.

When playing Death Prophet, imagine you're playing Starcraft, aiming to make a timing push each time your DP upgrades her ultimate, particularly at level 16. Aim to upgrade everything you can for that, including getting a fast Mek/Pipe and perhaps even a Medallion to further buff up her ultimate damage.

Why do I hear a lot of talk and theory crafting about 'stacking armour reduction' ie medallion, TA, Slardar etc. Decreasing a hero's armour has diminishing returns, so what extra do you gain out of extra -armour that is better than some other buff?

it has diminishing returns, but lategame heroes often have upwards 15~25 armor and you don't really reach noticeable diminishing returns until -5 to -10 armor
so until you have -25 to -35 armor it doesn't really matter it still owns

-armor only has diminishing returns when you start going into negative armor. It has increasing returns up to the point where you've reduced a target to exactly zero armor. Typically, as Dead9 said, lategame armor values are high enough that you are generally getting them to close to zero armor, so the value of -armor is pretty good.
