Coupled with various people on reddit claiming that this person or that person is going to get copyright claims filed against them or that random russian people on twitter constitute threats against streamers streaming the games etc. Then the other side is rabid anti-facebook activists proclaiming how evil facebook is and how anybody who watches the facebook stream is enabling evil etc. The root of the problem being how the tournament has been potentially the largest official viewership flop in history. It's pretty hilarious how badly ESL's streams got hammered by random dotatv casts. Like bulldog has a following sure but id' rather watch nahaz than him and he still got 22k views to the "official" stream's 4k or something. PPD and co were up around 20k and half the dota world thinks ppd is satan incarnate. when they went offline, literal MLPdota (aka who????) had over 10k views because people just want to be able to watch the game on a service that works for them. Facebook never breached 5K to my knowledge.

It does solve the problem of restreams and other pressing issues, while also providing a solid revenue stream for the Esport. A lot of these problems are created by groups like ESL have two masters: Fans, who do not pay and Sponsors: who do pay and kinda don't give a shit about what fans want. Despite what fans believe, they have limited power in this relationship when it comes to substantive issues like which streaming service is used.

Exclusive deals to shitty streaming sites fucks over sponsors about as much as does to viewers. If sponsors actually had that much power that deal would never have been made. Sponsors want views.

I work for some very large, very dumb companies who do this stuff all the time. One of our clients switch platforms to this garbage system that was supposed to be cheaper and store documents better. Anyone who used it for 10 minute would tell you that is incorrect and its terrible. But money makes bad idea become reality.

You have a marketing person at one company talking to Facebook, who wants streaming content and they have this brain child. They offer up the money and then dont' listen to the ESL people who say "Yo, people are not going to facebook live." I work for some very large, very dumb companies who do this stuff all the time. You literally said sponsors are the ones in power when it comes to whichever streaming service is used. If that was the case, it would always be Twitch, because they gain absolutelly nothing from switching. It will always be a loss in viewership. The only ones who do are the organizers and the streaming plataform. Sponsors don't give a fuck about how much FB is paying ESL. Sponsors want views. Twitch gives them views.

Tangentially, every time I hear people cite the "twitch payed 90mil for OWL rights" argument I die laughing. Imagine being dumb enough to pay blizzard for OWL when blizzard literally depend on you for OWL to have any success.

I think you misunderstand. I agree with you. The problem is we were not in the marketing meeting when Intel and Facebook decided to bring Esports to the platform and did not see the totally sweet power point that proved this was a good idea. I bet there was a sweet graph and it showed how much more valuable a facebook viewer was than a twitch viewer(that part is likely true, given how much data facebook collects, even if you don't have an account). And what likely turned the tide was the fat stack of money Facebook offered Modern Times Group to use its service. That fat stack of money took the power point to the next level. It is sort of the same thing. Its all money feeding into the event. And they control how the broadcast happens.

Also, it really is a miserable experience - the number one comment on chat was "-hide" because viewers were trying to figure out how to hide chat (nothing works). If you scroll slightly up or down on the page the player jumps out to a random spot, the ad for the event starts randomly playing, nahaz is screaming in your ear, no easily accessible VODs, emotes staring at you for no reason, etc. Basically only bearable if you full screen it, but I don't always want to full screen.

Anyhow. Go liquid and destiny is fun at the moment. Let's see if it gets too repetitive too quickly

Even when they had no popular competitor streaming they topped out at 5k. Of course, their links were all wrong and everything started late on day one so people who may have checked there originally didn't have a good experience. Not that that fixes everything, but like you'd really have to be self-flagellatory to actually watch on facebook. On January 24 2018 03:25 cecek wrote: Just got into the Magic ARENA beta.
