There's a huge distinction there... To be fair it sure seems like being a tl writer doesn't require any dota knowledge either

I imagine just sitting with his team backstage at a tournament and listening to them communicate about strats, items, drafts etc., would garner him more dota knowledge than most of us plebs.

I imagine he talks to PPD/RTZ and other friends in the scene quite often about dota and gets their insight. He probably knows EG's strategies before they're unveiled with how intimate his relationship seems to be with all his players. This is all speculative though and maybe he separates dota talk from business stuff, who knows. It's reasonable to believe he has a more casual working relationship with the players though given their prior friendships and the two areas (dota/business) are probably swished around a lot. Still just a 4k scrub.

i can be the most knowledgeable *insert any sport* strategist, stat tracker and coach and not be able to kick, hit, throw or do anything at all with the ball. Knowledge =/= playability.

And below is a list that requires less dota knowledge, but are they less important to our coverage and features? Hell no. So yes in a way you don't have to be a god at dota to write for us. You are kind of correct. But to pretend some of us aren't is insulting. There's also an important distinction to be made between analysis/strategy driven stuff and the other things we do. I'm fine with a 3k MMR player writing a preview if they follow the scene and know their stuff. Are you saying that since you are 3k yourself that everything you've said in the past week is null and void? http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/dota-2-general/478904-back-in-black http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/dota-2-general/483002-the-international-45-the-infinite-team-shuffle http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/dota-2-general/462152-coaching-in-esports-a-comprehensive-look http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/ti4/459504-to-make-a-dragon-bleed http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/dota-2-general/459500-20-20-dkiceiceice-questions
